Answering quesions from journalists during his flight to Australia, Pope Benedict XVI was asked about the recent divisions within the Anglican church. He responded: "I am praying so that there are no more schisms and fractures", referring to the recent turmoil regarding the church's acceptance of the ordination of female Bishops, and gay marriages.

However he did not comment on the rights and wrongs of the dispute, saying he did not wish to "interfere" in the debate. This is despite a recent statement from the Vatican that ordaining women as Bishops "will be an obstacle to its reconcilliation with the Roman Catholic Church."
