Stay away from GMO foods...

It looks like eating those lovely GMO foods are now starting to promote immune responses, and making vaccines less effective to boot. Needless to say, the mainstream media isn't about to start talking about this one...

http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/newscience/2007/2007-1109beyeretal.html#m...

Quote:

Minute quantities of a bacterial protein inserted in corn provoke immune reactions in mice. The protein is added to increase the effectiveness of plant-based transgenic vaccines. The results indicate that special care will be needed with transgenic corn to reduce exposure to workers and the public if this protein is used commercially in corn or other food crops, to avoid unwanted immune responses in people and decreased effectiveness of oral vaccines that use the protein.

    • A group of Canadian scientists wrote a letter to the Toronto Globe and Mail which warned that genetic drift or pollution from plants gene-spliced to produce medical drugs or industrial chemicals is a disaster waiting to happen.

The letter--signed by retired Agriculture Canada scientist Bert Christie, former McMaster University science dean Dennis McCalla, McGill University animal-science professor Dick Beames, and Dr. Hugh Lehman, an expert in agricultural ethics at the University of Guelph--warns that there is a "high probability" that a StarLink-type contamination incident could occur because of open-air testing and cultivation of crop varieties spliced to produce pharmaceutical drugs or industrial chemicals.

In other words, a person could be eating corn or soybeans or some other common food and instead get a dose of a powerful medical vaccine or drug, or a toxic dose of an industrial chemical.

There is no telling what the results of this human experiment will be. I say I want to stay away from GMO, and I can only do that if it is labeled.

I agree. I've not totally given up on fighting for a moratorium on GM development until we know more about it, it just seems Pandora's box is already opened. My biggest fight has now turned to just getting the stuff labeled so I have the choice to avoid it. It's becoming harder and harder to recognize non GM food because now the words "natural" and even "organic" aren't sacred unless they are certified. And then you have to do research on the company that certified them in order to see what their standards of certification are...URGH!! And like you said, it's so hard to control plants from germinating other plants, who knows really in our crops? Scary stuff! Thanks for fighting the good fight, it's a tough one.

    • GM food vs. Chemically Sprayed food-
      give me GM food anyday!
hasnt anyone learned about how a pineapple or an ear of corn was created?! Lemme tell you, its a hell of a lot better for you than that DDT was or all of the other chemicals that we use still are!

and hey man, dont make blanket statements on Americans.

Organic food doesn't use pesticides. And GM foods are modified to resist pesticides so that they don't die when the farm is heavily sprayed with them, killing all of the other living things(weeds, bugs, and small animals) except for the GM crop. So essentially, GM foods encourage more use of pesticides than previous non-organic crops did. Also, did you know that the same company that made DDT, and agent orange is the company who is the biggest advocate, seller and developer of GM seeds. Check out Monsanto...if in fact you would like to actually be informed on the issue.

    • The panic-mongering over GM foods is disgusting.

Most people don't even know how the genetics works and don't even attempt to learn.

GM foods save BILLIONS of lives, if your stupid, bourgeois American ass doesn't want to eat it that's fine. Stop starving the rest of the world.

GM food isn't saving anyone's life. It is not designed for that. It is meant to create a profit for big agribusiness. There is already plenty of food on the planet for everyone. Hording for profit is the main problem.
GMO's are created in several ways, all of which involve a process called "gene spicing," or literally cutting out parts of the DNA and replacing it with new DNA. In order to influence this new gene to be accepted by the receiving host, biologists use vectors to deliver genetic material into the cells of living organisms or culture them in vitro. Because viruses have evolved specialized molecular mechanisms to transport their genes inside the cells they infect, viral vectors are most commonly used.
In other words, viruses are used to infect the cells of the host in order to make them "sick" or weak enough to accept new gene information. The enormous complexity of cellular activities stored in the gene is not well enough known for this type of unpredictable manipulation. Toxin release, which usually occurs in very small amounts naturally, has been found to increase considerably in this process.
I accept that there will not be a time when this is no longer practiced in the food supply.
My main issue is that although I have decided for myself and my family that I do not want to consume these GM foods, the FDA and EPA have decided that I do not have the right to make that decision...labeling food to be Genetically Modified is against the law...on a federal level! So even at the state level, they are not allowed to label it. Not to mention that even the word "organic" on foods may not be what we think. Non-organic foods have been given the ok to use the word "organic", or "natural" as well. "Certified organic" is the only way to know for sure, and then you have to do research on who exactly certified it.
So even if you can not see why my "stupid, bourgeois American a**" would chose to stay clear of GM foods, I hope you can at least defend my right to do so.
      Peace

    • These GMO's need to be outlawed. There are to many problems. In most cases as usual "It's not nice to fool mother nature". The corps need to keep thier hands off. I hope more people become aware of this problem and begin to protest GMO's.

    • It's easy enough to say stay away from GM foods, the hard thing is telling which products contain them. Unless one is willing to eat only heirloom foods grown in their own backyard, avoiding GM foods is pretty hard because there are no labeling requirements forcing manufacturers to inform the consumer which products actually contain them.
