Buddhist Monks protest the Dalai Lama in Philadelphia

RandomEvolution
On Wedndesday July 16th, 2008, the Dalai Lama visited the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts to give a public talk. While many people were thrilled to see him speak, Shugden monks spoke out against the Dalai Lama, claming that he is a lying hyprocrite.

    • The comparison is absurd. Buddhism is about self growth and compassion. First, the protesters are mostly westerners, not Tibetans, and their group has been viewed as a cult by those who have left it after spending huge amounts of money to be involved. If they idolize a symbol instead of learning from the lessons of all Buddhas they are being misled. The Dalai Lama symbolizes not only a religious leader, but also the main representative of all struggling Tibetans to the world today. I saw this group protesting while in NY and they called him a dictator and liar. Is that what the followers of Dorje Shugden are learning from their practice? No wonder this practice is considered evil.

Buddhism is about compassion which is why these people are demonstrating. The Dalai Lama has ignored requests for dialog for more than 20 years now, and so it is necessary to speak up because people ARE suffering, & the one person who can stop it will not respond. Every person at the demonstration is acting out of a deep compassion to both protect those who are being persecuted in the Tibetan exile community and also to ask for religious freedom - which is not being given. I ask you to be open to the possibility that things are not the way they seem. Media images are often deceptive and country leaders have also created images which have later been uncovered as incorrect. If you are not open, then I understand why this would be difficult for you. The group demonstrating are the Western Shugden Society and have never been viewed as a cult. They are an umbrella organization of practitioners from many countries around the world from many different Buddhist groups and centers. What difference it makes if a Buddhist is Tibetan or western. A pure practitioner is a pure practitioner. And pure Buddhism is very difficult to find in Tibet or India now. Check the history of Tibet. More than 90% of Tibetans were serfs under the Dalai Lama's rule. It was a feudal society with medieval punishments - under the Dalai Lama's rule. The only educated people other than the few aristocrats around the Lama's were monks who were fortunate enough to be permitted into a monastery. Other than this Tibetans were and still are very uneducated. This is not a criticism - but a fact. So while Tibetans lived in a country where Buddhism once flourished, they were rarely educated in its principals and thus were influenced more by superstition than their practice and understanding of Buddhist principals. The people attending the demonstrations have all been studying Buddhism for many years and have been deeply changed by their experiences. This is why you saw thousands of angry Dalai Lama supporters yelling and throwing things at the few hundred demonstrators in NYC - and amongst them, not one angry face. Just love and compassion. You should also be aware that there were Tibetans in the group demonstrating. At least 100. But seeing the reaction from the Tibetan Dalai Lama supporters - you should understand why Tibetans would be afraid to be in public like this. I heard one Gehse say "If we were to do this in the Tibetan community in India we would be killed". You should also be aware that the Tibetan Dalai Lama supporters came and photographed the faces of the Tibetans at the demonstration and then posted "Wanted Posters" in Jackson Heights where they lived. Many of these people have lost their jobs since. And why would you say that demonstrating is evil. It is merely freedom of speech in a democratic society. There is a saying in Buddhism: "If someone insults you, it is either true or not true. If it is true, then you should thank them, and if it is not true, then you should ignore them". If someone calls the Dalai Lama a liar and a dictator, it would be best to find out if this were true or not true before calling them evil on the basis of this. It is very easy to check and see that the Dalai Lama is a dictator and not a democratic leader. This is important in understanding how he is able to deceive. All I ask is that you be open to the possibility. The truth will be seen eventually. But until then monks are being put out in the street with no money and no place to go. They are being tormented and ostracized. They are being denied food, medical treatment and travel visas. This discrimination has made it to the west, and it is sad that because of a media image, people choose not to check the facts. Dorje Shugden is a Wisdom Buddha, an enlightened being. He protects our Dharma realizations, our inner qualities. It is only our own mind which harms. Our own negative minds. So please be open. Just this will help those who are suffering right now. Thank you. LW
