15% of women soldiers experience rape, sexual assault and harrassment

15 percent of women soliders who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan have reported being sexually assaulted, raped, or sexually harassed to the Veterans Association. Their attackers have been fellow US servicemen, foreign contractors and local nationals.

More than 190,000 women have served so far in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as more and more women speak up about horrific assaults they're forcing the military and Department of Veterans Affairs to do something about it.

In January, the VA opened its 16th inpatient ward specializing in treating victims of military sexual trauma, this one in New Jersey. In response to complaints that it is too male-focused in its care, the VA is making changes such as adding locks on hospital room doors so women patients feel safer.

The 16th ward for sexually assaulted female soldiers!? Are you shocked by the prevalence of this problem? Is it all part of the risk of going to war? Or a shocking indictment of the attitudes of men in the army?

    • The New War Collection: Resistance/Permanence (2007-2009) is a documentary new media project. It is made up of two parts, in brief: a social networking research website that provides a place of empowerment for participants who have experienced military sexual trauma (MST) in Iraq and abroad; and a physical installation that facilitates an experiential space for these testimonies to exist and be heard through audience interaction. Both of these sites work together in carrying knowledge and experience to the audience, participants, and researcher. They act to engage the public in a call to action for ending the violence against women in the armed forces in America and around the world.

Show your support by sharing your story. Your story is important. Your story will be heard.

Check out www.thenewwarcollection.com for further information or to get involved in the project!

    • 15% out of 190,000 is almost 28,000 women soldiers being subjected to sexual harassment, rape... It is simply shameful and tragic specially having in mind that:
1- The US soldiers like any other soldier in the world are usually trained for fighting and are carrying guns, and thus, civilians such as contractors, ...can barely touch them against their will.
2- The fellow US servicemen have been indicated as the first group of those who have been responsible for such shameful actions and the number of which, one can imagine, must have been the highest among the others.
I believe that those who have committed such assaults should not only be considered as criminals, but traitors to their own country and its reputation. The US troops together with the soldiers of other countries went to Iraq and Afghanistan to overthrow their corrupted governments and their filthy administrations who had denied basic human rights to their own people such as freedom and democracy. When these soldiers commit such criminal acts against their own fellow women, to this extent, how on earth we should expect the Iraqis and or Afghans comprehend and believe in the goodwill of the US and other countries who fought there? The simple question which crosses their mind is how to trust these people who are raping and or assaulting their own fellow Americans. I believe no one can feel safe as a consequence of such behaviors. Do something about it before it is too late.
