Killing for religion is justified, say third of Muslim students

"The survey found that extreme Islamist ideology has a profound influence on a significant minority of Muslims on campuses across the country.

The findings will concern police chiefs, the security services and ministers, who are struggling with radicalisation among Muslim communities.

The YouGov poll was conducted for the Right-wing think tank, the Centre for Social Cohesion, at 12 universities, including Imperial College and Kings College London. It also found:

* 40 per cent support the introduction of sharia into British law for Muslims

* a third back the notion of a worldwide Islamic caliphate (state) based on sharia law

* 40 per feel it is unacceptable for Muslim men and women to mix freely

* 24 per cent do not think men and women are equal in the eyes of Allah

* a quarter have little or no respect for homosexuals.

Although 53 per cent said that killing in the name of religion was never justified, compared with 94 per cent of non-Muslims, 32 per cent said that it was. Of these, 4 per cent said killing could be justified to "promote or preserve" religion, while 28 per cent said it was acceptable if that religion were under attack.

There was also sympathy for the view that Muslim soldiers in the Armed Forces should be allowed to opt out of operations in Muslim countries, with 57 per cent agreeing.

The report's authors found that Islamic societies on campus, operating under the umbrella of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, exert a strong influence on many of Britain's 90,000 Muslim students. A quarter of them belong to Islamic societies and their views are often more extreme.

While three-fifths of society members said that killing in the name of religion was acceptable, an equal number of non-member Muslims said it was never justified. The security services have identified Islamist activism at universities acts as a possible "gateway" to violent extremism. Several terrorists and sympathisers began their extremist careers on campuses.

The authors of the report, "Islam on Campus", lay much of the blame for extremism among Muslim students on the group Hizb ut-Tahrir, which seeks to build a worldwide Islamic state.

YouGov polled 600 Muslim students and 800 non-Muslim students at universities with a high number of Muslims."

I am having serious trouble distinguishing what party you belong to here, you could either be an extremist muslim or hopefully not, a conservative american. In either choice you bring down the company you keep by making ignorant statements such as this.

      i think you have no idea how to comprehend, what this says is that because of extremists in Japan, all of Japan suffered, and because of extremism in Islam, all of Islam will suffer. It's the way it works, I don't need to say if it's wrong or right or a hard decision, I'm just saying that's the way it works.

      oh and I'm wearing a helmet and ski mask because I was skiing when this picture was taken. When I'm finished skiing I take it off and walk around with nothing covering my face.

      I think maybe you might bring down the company you keep by assuming ignorance while being yourself ignorant.

    • These wacko extremists do not the entirity of Islam represent.

      Fervent anti-Islamics and antagonistic atheists wished they represented the whole of Islam and religion but they do not.

      However they do show that Islamic extremists (not muslims in general) have displayed a willingness to commit acts of murder and terror moreso in recent times on a larger scale than other extremist groups.

    • Ok. You know, i really am astonished by how easy it is to look up information about anything on the net and how people keep on refusing to do any research about what they post and talk about.
      It is just to say this is an atheistic propaganda to scare people away from Islam. What is so terrifying about "sharia law"? As a matter of fact what is "sharia law"? Well, what is sharia? Can you answer these questions based on valid Islamic references and not some social analytical studies made by non-Muslims (just to be fair to those you are demonizing)?

    • Nobody cares about other People religions and have no interest in slamming anything from them, unless... The Religion could at any time cause harm to you. Points in Islam:
      1. The non-believers should be beheaded. WTF!?
      2. If anything goes against Islam, they have the right to kill. i.e. Someone imprisoned some Muslims while defending himself or against anything, the Religion allows you as a Muslim as well, to attack the "Imprison-ers" and kill them.

      AFAIK, no other major Religion allows this or tolerates such actions. And if they were ever done, they were never ever allowed or encouraged by the Religion itself.

    • Yet another misleading Title attacking people with Religion.

      The Islamic world is really wrong with the allowance of killing, the actual Quran says you are allowed to kill for various reasons. Why do you think there are all these suicide bombers and train/bus/car bombs?

      This survey is really a screwed up one. New Islamic students are getting more brain wash from teachers, this is quite worrying for the future, yet, the current Muslims are a lot less violent and like it was said, does not represent the 1.2 billion in the world.

      If some "liberal" ran a survey for a socialist think-tank that said that 50% of Americans believe in killing in the name of Christ, but only asked loaded questions to 300 people in Boston who were all say Roman Catholic, how would you feel?

      Let's say, on top of that, it's posted on current and "liberal" people start saying that we should nuke the south and mid-west to get rid of these evil, scum of the earth bastards who only want to murder people that don't fit their world view.

      Don't you think that'd be something that irked you a little bit?

    • Again, a comparison to other organisations can show how disturbed we should be by this: Imagine, say, a cult, in which 30% of the members said that it would be allright to KILL, in order to preserve what they believe, WHATEVER they believe.

      The 6% of Christians are just as scary, because they're more numerous.

      thats only 600 college students who are very privileged. Think about the billion muslims who are poor and hate ever one who is not of the muslim faith. Im sure if you asked 10000 Iranians that number would be inflated.

      to clayjj05, brilliant deduction, they should do a survey from Iranians, a country which has not had a part in a single war in 20 years, if only we could say the same about ourselves. Also, if you discount civil strife you could say they haven't had a war in nearly 250 years.

    • This is disturbing. I don't think Muslims should be allowed to violate human rights just because their religion says it's ok. Especially not in Britain. They must follow the rules of their host country in regards to human rights if they wish to stay there.
