Catholics 'ignore rules on sex'

"Most practising Catholics ignore the church's teaching on contraception and more than half think it should be revised, a survey has suggested.

It comes 40 years after Pope Paul VI issued his encyclical Humanae Vitae which forbade birth control use.

Catholic publication The Tablet surveyed 1,500 Mass-goers in England and Wales on their attitudes to sex and contraception.

More than half of those who were aged 18-45 had cohabited before marriage.

Many Catholics had expected the Pope to revise the church's teaching on contraception when the encyclical was published in 1968.

But he ignored the recommendations of a pontifical commission and upheld the ban on contraception."

    • Whatever our beliefs are here we need to consider that there are people who take the bible and its teachings very seriously. In this day and age it is irresponsible to preach abstinence and to snub contraception. Our youth and community has made a transition and part of the church's responsibility is to help there followers make that transition safely.

    • Ok. First off, I don't care what you practice. As long as you don't shove it in my face or other people's faces. Second off, I'm not sure because I'm not really well educated on the Bible but I do not know if it says anything about contraception.

But then again, the Bible was rewritten over the years through translations and one's personal interpretation so I do not trust it too much.

    • Actually, religion is exactly like a disease. It has been a kind of social psychosis, pitting one group of believers against another, promoting magical thinking and undermining reason, social progress and the advancement of science.

Religion is hazardous to our collective health. And there's a compendium of evidence for it, from the sad history of religious conflict through the ages to such recent studies as the one from Creighton University that found the most religious democratic countries exhibit substantially higher degrees of social dysfunction (homicide, sexually transmitted disease, teen pregnancy, abortion and child mortality) than countries with larger percentages of atheists and agnostics.

Religious people have no problem recognizing that religions can be composed of wish-fulfilling myths, Santa Claus-like gods, fallacious reasoning and paradoxical contradictions (hence the birth control rule); they just believe their own religion is the exception.

    • You talk so much about "respect" but you come off so harshly, petarro. Everyone does that sometimes, myself definitely included, but wtf? Do you think it's respectful to spew judgmental rants about AIDS and abortion? Doesn't your religion teach compassion and patience?
I wish you'd explain yourself more instead of always falling back on the "god said so, don't argue or you are an idiot" bullshit

I am tolerant and merciful. This is why I reply to your discriminatory Posts towards Religions.

Hey, some other might have strapped a bomb to your neck already, don't you think? :-)

Maybe you should now learn to respect and posts about Catholics when it is REALLY needed?

Have you ever thought about the Responsibility you have with every single one of your posts, or any ones posts? Do you understand there are weak minds in this world and some of them take things literally and Who knows how they can raise their Children?

Do you want your daughter which is 13 to experience sex and by the time she is 18 have a record of 3-4 guys in the list already? I hope one day, you will know Life is based on "Respect".

No, I don't think anyone would have "strapped a bomb to my neck", and that is really a weird and mean thing to say.

I now see that when you say "respect", what you mean is "religion". You think everyone is ignorant who doesn't believe in what you do, you think it's intolerant to talk about religion if you don't agree with it. However you only make yourself out to be disrespectful and intolerant in the process.

I post about a wide variety of subjects; if you look at my profile you would see that and stop claiming all this outrageous shit. My responsibility is not to perpetuate the bullshit of religion, but to keep it the hell out of our political and legal system and encourage people to see the extent of influence it has on our society, and to question it at all times.

I do understand there are "weak minds" in this world; you prove that to me every time you post a response.

    • I can't believe such ignorance. There is a part of this that none of you understand which is Respect.

Religion has nothing to "revise". Things are in a certain way for a reason, if they are somehow "bent" by the people then it is considered "fine" and something that is not good for you but tolerable.

There is a reason behind all these rules that come since Centuries, the fact that you forgot why they exist does not mean or gives a reason to "dissolve them".

You just want to get laid so your only option is to "screw the religion" so that you can be "allowed".

If you don't believe in all this, then why bother? Why even comment about it? Just go on and have sex with whomever you want to and at whatever age you care. After all, at 13 you know already about abortions, AIDS, parenting and responsibilities, Right? You also have enough profit like to carry a baby around? Or well, you might already know about abortion? HEY THAT IS REALLY POPULAR AND QUICK!?

Every single one of you who approves this "Revision of Methods" is yet another idiot of the planet.

Religion can't have anything to do with the ways things are because the purpose of religion is to change the way things are.

Is the main reason you want to have sex because you want a baby? Do you see a member of the opposite sex and think to yourself, gosh, I really want to have sex with them so I can make a baby. When you're about to have sex with someone, do you get turned on because you just want to make a baby oh so bad?

Well, if you do, your sex life must be terrible, and I feel bad for you.

And as far as this garbage about abstinence being the only way to not get an STD and not get pregnant, that is a complete joke and shows that the Bush administration has done a good job misleading youth. Religious people, please, for the good of the world, go out, find someone you love, have a monogamous relationship with them, get tested with them, and use two forms of contraception with the pull out method. You have a greater chance of getting struck by lightening than getting an STD or getting pregnant this way.

You religious people always think something has a greater purpose. It doesn't. We can have sex because it feels good emotionally and physically.

    • 27 Reasons Why Sex Is Better Than Religion

      1. Sex creates babies.
      2. You get better quality partners by being good at sex than by being good at religion.
      3. Having sex doesn't make you feel guilty.
      4. You don't have to get out of bed to have sex.
      5. Sex is fun.
      6. If someone is yelling at you during sex, you're probably doing it right.
      7. The company is better.
      8. You don't have unwanted observers judging your sincerity.
      9. It is so interesting that you don't fall asleep until afterwards, or not at all.
      10. The food part is more nutritious.
      11. Sex doesn't have a so many rules.
      12. Countries don't make war on each other for their sexual practices.
      13. You don't have to take someone elses word on how to have sex.
      14. The environment is more comfortable.
      15. The memories have a higher rerun value.
      16. You never have doubts that you're actually having sex.
      17. Even when it's bad, it's good.
      18. You'll never waste an afternoon arguing with someone over whether their sex life is better than yours.
      19. You won't be ostracized for not having sex.
      20. You don't have to worry about whether you've chosen the right kind of sex.
      21. They don't pass around collection plates in bed.
      22. You won't be eternally tortured in flames for not having sex, not having enough sex, or being bad at sex.
      23. Singing is optional during sex.
      24. You don't have to dress up for sex.
      25. You can hope for a second coming without 2,000 years of effort.
      26. In the throes of sexual passion, one can cry out "Oh God! God!" but in a church service one cannot cry out "Oh Sex! Sex!"
      27. Jesus only comes twice. Booyah!

    • Em Catholics aren't aliens or something, they are like everyone else who have religion but don't go mad for it, they pick and choose.

they take some of it, be nice, go to heaven and leave others, no sex, don't curse...

Any modern "catholic" country, takes no notice of these sky pilots anyway.

In Ireland one of the most common adverts is the government telling use to always use condoms, no matter what. And they've given me plenty of free samples (the tin they come in is excellent for rolling too, thanks govt!)

    • Yeah so? Who cares if they are ignoring it. How is this news?

It's like saying that, "Oh my gosh, there are Muslims that ignore the Koran and drink."

If you know anything about culture and religion, then you'd know that this isn't news.

    • What I really think is funny is that it's like a catch 22- If they don't change the rule, they risk being seriously out of touch with the reality of people's lives- if they do change it, it goes to show that religions will change their rules based on what people want, not what "god" said. Either way the church goes on this one, they are taking a blow to their credibility.

    • Who should listen to a 70-year old virgin making rules on sex anyways? They are so out of touch with reality and the reality is that our booming human population is unsustainable, especially if you want anything close to a decent standard of living on more than a dollar a day.

    • but it's so much fun. maybe you should do it more? and there are some other animals that have sex just because they enjoy it too. and even...... homosexual acts. eek, what would god say?

Hell yeah its fun, let them know Brimmer, and your right Dolphins, and some types of moneys have sex for fun. Also any form or sex not done with the intent of reproduction is sodomy! So that’s why the church can’t really change the ruling on contraception because then the intent to reproduce wouldn’t be there. Plus I think I can speak for a larg number of people that during the naked rodeo is the only time they even really mention God in their relationship, OH GOD ha ha ha oh yeah

    • Sex's main function, as with all other animals, is reproduction more than pleasure, so maybe people need to think more before they actually have sex if they worry about the population.

    • Yeah, but this probably isn't that much of a newsflash.
I think we already know what you think of the Catholic Church. LOL
Sex is private and contraception is a DUH. This planet can't handle the population explosion and it is not responsible for religion to preach something that is not their business.
