In 2005-2006, alone, Obama voted with Republicans for 20 major Senate bills for war and the Bush/Cheney Agenda.

mjsmith, it is an exremely complicated issue for sure. I have no clue what an answer would look like. Way too much is tangled into the Middle East for there to be a solution that says "just fo this and all better" I wish it was that easy. Certainly to stop killing would be a big step towards peace from all parties involved. The killing is going and coming from all directions.

I do not care for Senator Barack Obama's foreign policy platform. He is far too supportive of Israel. I would like to hear what the candidates are going to do to help the Palestinian people. I do not want to start a big argument. I just think that the time to do what it takes establish a true stable peace is now. That means: Rebuilding and stabilizing Iraq and Afghanistan, resolving the Israeli/Arab conflicts, resolving the Israeli/Iranian issues, establishing a Palestinian state, get Iran onboard with the Global Community, just for starters. I do not have all of the answers. The time is now to face up to these issues, tomorrow is to late. I will NEVER feel that removing Sadaam Husein from power was the wrong decision. I am not against Israel, I am for a peaceful Middle Easter (Western Asia) community. Do not hand me that "they have been fighting forever" crap.

Dont want to look like a gang up here, but TouchArt...do you think the *other* guy is better? If Obama is the least of the evils, then thats all we have. But being the least of the evils I think not...he is at least displaying some courage and direction for America. And, yea..Change.
We probably cannot just pull out in a jiffy..there needs to be some sort of schedule..pulling out on a drop of a hat would be suicidal. Bush left a good deep mess of crap America and allies need to dig out of.
And Obama does have some aces up his sleave...he's not gonna show his hand so the *other* guy can rip it apart to no end.
So, you say he is not really for Peace...well, TouchArt. Peace begins in the Humans Heart and at Home. When we have "our house" in order and in peace, only then can we spread Peace.

again.......WHAT IS YOUR SOLUTION.. and this time I am asking for you to make it in relation to candidates running for president. You bash a candidate running for President and you retreat into what each one of us can do to change the world. While I whole heartedly agree with what you say about each of us doing our part it is a more balance argument if compare apples to apples here. Who is your alternative CANDIDATE? You know one will be picked in a few months. Do you want to be part of that or sit back on the sidelines and tell us all how wrong Obama is? Being part of peace is being part of the WHOLE system. If you do not like the system it would be wise to get into it and demand the system you want. I like the world you describe in your post ( ...a few posts above this one) but dreaming a better world is one thing. Gandhi didn't just sit around dreaming about peace. He was an aggressive participant/leader in action towards peace. He didn't just complain about the British Government.

tsk it's conceivable to me perhaps TouchArt simply wonders about the degree of your acknowledgment when you express complaint in terms of merely "bashing" probably your favorite candidate. In TouchArt's view it may simply be the awareness of the actual voting facts that you may tend to dispute despite your demand for a "solution" ...which I'll add you seem to imply must be another candidate, but to be modest, what's wrong with making demands on Obama? Perhaps even you know that no current leading candidate is a any viable "solution" posing little more than separate heads of the same hydra. And...what's so wrong with a little pertinent awareness? Perhaps your arguments lie more closely to the offense of "bashing" than an actual evaluation of the facts which might lead you to your own conclusions.
To me, a more honest "solution" would have been something or someone (or anything) more revolutionary like Ron Paul...I don't see that as Obama, not even by a long shot. And I'm confident it's not McCain. So, in my view, there may not be one, just as there hasn't been in past years, any answer for Bush and his neo-con cronies... But what would be your "solution" if someone demanded it of you I wonder. Maybe not so different from mine I might dare to think, although your enthusiasm for Obama exceeds my own I believe. *shrug* I don't fault you. There are others just like that.

echoz, my list of candidates was first Kucinich 2nd Edwards and 3rd Obama. He is not my best choice. He has issues and I say PUSH him on them. Nothing in what I am sayng about Obama says I would not demand more from him. Ron Paul is WAY TOO naive about economics as many Libertarians are. A bit too head in the clouds for me. And who says I think there is something wrong with a little pertinent awareness? My point is within the system we have right now in front of us we have a few choices to make. That is why the question is around CANDIDATE and not generalizations about a better way of life. There are loads of them and I make them often. In this thread we are not talking about generalizing a better way of life. The title of the thread indicates Obama is against peace. I am just sticking to the topic. If you want to talk general about a better way of life I love to do that. AND.....for the most part.....I agree with TouchArt!

generalizing about a better way of life? ah...no. think i'm quite a bit more cynical. although I tend to like your practical approach to working the system potentially. my point is about taking a sober look at obama that doesn't include this media fan-fare.
you asked for a solution to the facts that obama has appeared peace-loving "I didn't vote for the war" but actually, in truth, voted for the war... I've suggested there simply isn't a clear solution per se. That we're being force-fed what we wouldn't want and complacently made to believe that we like it. Mass manipulation. Obama at least looks like he certaily could be that perfect bitter pill perhaps. That's the awareness that concerns me. It's not about how good it can be, but how much worse it can potentially get.
I'm sorry I'm so cynical... but as regards politicians, I certainly am.

Amazing how Obama zealots are blinded to his flaws.
When Obama promised Peace and to end the Iraq War, he was lauded by his supporters.
When Obama and his political machine trashed Hillary Clinton for her vote for the Iraq War while he was still a state senator, they never accounted for the documented fact that as a U.S. Senator, Obama voted for the Iraq War on 20 major bills.
Now, that Obama is pulling back on every promise to end the Iraq War, promises to re-deploy troops in Iraq to Afghanistan, vows to give $30 billion in defense funds to Israel, beats the war drums against Iran, and says he'll increase military troops by 100,000, supporters still refuse to see Obama is not a Peace candidate.
The rationalizations given for Obama's betrayal of people for peace are pathetic. Obama supporters defend his duplicity by claiming he's moving to the center to win, promoting "change lite" to win, not showing his cards, etc. It is sad because it seems these Obama believers really think that their candidate will do whatever they think is right and will bring the "Change" they define and desire.
Obama and his campaign have been purposefully vague in describing the Change his promises. That way, voters can be lulled into thinking the change they want is what Obama will bring.
But Obama followers refuse to see that the senator's actions and votes for war and the Bush/Cheney Neo-Con agenda show Obama is not for peace or for change. If Obama was for peace and positive change, he had ample opportunities to use his votes and power as a U.S. Senator to prove it. But he didn't.
Again, actions peak loud. Obama's actions and votes in the Senate prove he is not for peace or for change anyone can believe in.

I'm not surprised.
I did hear on WSJonline in an interview with Obama himself (trying too hard to look and sound "presidential" imho) that he wants our troops out of Iraq, not to come home contrarily as everyone feels so good to expect about him, but rather to send them into Afghanistan for God knows what...begging the question, WTF is the matter with this fool? Now that he's garnered the trust of the American public, it seems he's quietly back pedaling into government as usual...
I don't think this "Hussein" (wtf is up with that name) has the balls to stand up against the war machine mongrels as he's led some to believe. that much seems fairly clear to me. And remember all that "I wasn't for the war" crap he rode in on? Screw Hussein and whatevertf he may pretend to stand for, bring the freakn boys home, and very simply prevent the fleecing of America by "American" corporations. That's all I'd ask for...

is that your best attempt to be facetious? =) how touching =) ...yes and WTF if I AM a bit ill at ease about his phukn name, in the sense that it kinda oddly reminds me of an infamous guy named Saddam, remember him from recent history "David"??? And if I told you my first name was Adolf who would you think of?...whether you even think you wanted to or not...) tsk honestly, it just kinda sets off my more common albeit natural, cultural American sensibilities a bit for more common naming convention. Gives me a bit of a subconcious pause or whatever, maybe but just a bit worse for infamy than something like a guy named in unisex for "Kim," or "Carol." You recognize and know it is different...somehow. And isn't he? I mean some people are absolutely lauding that very fact, but it's possible it could be to a fault. Some people are still wondering just how "different" and what KIND of "change" to expect...and in America, WE have that right to do so. It's more American than cherry pie. Certainly more American than you'll find people identifying with in the name of "Hussein" =D
If all it says is that I'm not "sold" on "Hussein" or "Barrack" Obama then so be it. I'm guilty. hey I like his speeches, but I always wonder what specifically that change will amount to... Always. and that despite the name...

change scares a fearful society. He is smart to promote "change lite" because he knows the level of fear Americans carry around inside them. I am constantly amazed at the level of fear woven through many of these threads just in the language used.
That first jump off the high dive takes a bunch of courage but after you do it the first time it is kind of addicting.

The only lasting solution is one that is based in the lives and hearts of the people. If we act locally, support sustainable living and energy, change will be grounded and sustainable.
If we refuse to buy products that poison the earth, air and water and dehumanize and endanger the people who make them, we stop funding the multinational corporations that pollute and oppress.
If we start valuing and cultivating human energy, we can transform our energy crisis into a creative and scientific renaissance. When we adopt solar and wind technology, we lessen our dependence on fossil fuel, coal and nuclear energy, and increase our economic and military security and respect in the world.
Self-sufficient communities don't have as much incentive to terrorize other communities to extract and market their resources. And they don't tend to get attacked either.
The whole linear conquest western thinking has amassed lots of money and power for 1.5% of the world's population, but brought war, poverty and environmental devastation.
It's time to rethink this bankrupt way of thinking and relearn the sustainable thinking of indigenous people throughout the world who know we share the earth and can live in balance with it and all our relations.
Each being is responsible for the impact they have on the earth. Elders teach that we have the responsibility to make decisions for the 7th generation. That's not just words. It is an actual instruction for survival.
Suggest people stop waiting for a new president to change things and begin changing things right now in our own communities. We can seek out leaders and teachers who act from love and responsibility and empower each person to fulfill their divine potential.
I think it was Ghandi who said to never forget that even through the darkest times, the power of love and peace have always prevailed in the end.

My suggestion is to not expect Obama or any president, congress person or senator to act in the best interests of the people, the constitution, and the earth.
We can't wait for November and January to change things in America and the world. And we can't expect any politician in the current system to solve things.
Each person can make a difference and begin changing things right now. Lao Tze said if you want peace in the world, start with peace within yourself, your family and your neighborhood and peace will grow everywhere.

Obama voted with the Republicans on over 20 major Bush/Cheney bills for war.
You say he will bring peace.
Prior behavior is the most accurate predictor of future behavior.
If Obama is for peace and change, why does he vote with Republicans for war, right-wing judges, the Patriot Act and limits on constitutional freedoms?
Actions speak loud. And Obama's actions do not match his words.

If you are saying I am ignorant to the facts and that I am blinded by the Obama package you are wrong on my position.
I am more informed than maybe a sane person should be but i am no longer be sane.
Lately I have a knee jerk reaction to any broad sweeping statements made like "Senator Obama is not for peace." It is just hard to respond anymore to such generalization.
In my opinion, any person and and 2nd choice person running for president right now has problems that do not solve this country or the world's issues completely. So I must agree that Obama has problems. So do I. These problems are workable.
Also, We must keep in mind that any candidate who is running for president would not likely reveal all his or her cards if some of those cards push them too far left or to far right. They actually are trying to make everybody happy all of the time. It is a crazy game to watch happen but if they plan on actually getting elected it is wise not to push too hard on any one agenda. This is the difficult part for the voter. We actually are stuck with playing a bit of a guessing game when we vote. The facts are the facts...until after the election and we get to see who we elected. Okay, maybe that is exaggerating a bit but it kinda feels that way anymore.
again I ask you:
What is your solution?

Curious how posters from outside America are "all on Obama's ball sack" and jump in to defend "their" hero whenever any facts about how Senator Obama's words don't match his actions.
Suggest if those in Europe and abroad who buy the brilliantly packaged Obama and his empty promise to bring peace and change, even though his votes and actions show he won't, invite him to repatriate to their country and run to be their president.
They probably still think Obama is not taking any money from corporate interests and is "above politics as usual."
There's a saying that candidates with political machine support will win unless they're caught with a dead girl or a live boy. (if you think this isn't Obama, check out his Illinois political connections and the history of democratic party politics in Chicago).
Facts don't matter to zealots or the gullible.
But hopefully, there are some thinking Americans who can tell that a senator who casts over 20 major votes for war and repeatedly votes for the Neo-Con's Bush/Cheney agenda does not stand for peace or change. - 3 years ago

Competely silly?
Obama's own actions and votes for war show he is not for peace.
To say Senator Obama is for peace when his continual votes for war show where he stands, just doesn't make sense.
Facts don't seem to matter to people blinded by the packaged Obama.
Facts of how Obama doesn't walk his talk, changes his position depending on who he's talking to and where he is in the presidential race, will matter greatly to the 100,000 more troops he promises to deploy, to the U.S. Troops in Iraq that he intends to re-deploy to Afghanistan, the soldiers' families, and the people of Iraq and Afghanistan who will suffer from the increased bombing and killing Obama will bring if elected U.S. President.
McCain may not be better with regards to war, but he's not saying he's the peace candidate.

But straight talk about the facts is what is needed now.
These young people do their research and debunk the hype surrounding Obama by showing how the Illinois Senator votes again and again for war, while claiming he is the peace candidate, and votes repeatedly for the Bush/Cheney agenda, while promising he will bring change.
