Karl Rove held in contempt by House Judiciary Committee

Image
bshipp
A House panel Wednesday voted to cite former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to answer questions about the dismissals of several federal prosecutors as its Senate counterpart explored punishments for an array of alleged past and present Bush administration misdeeds.

Voting 20-14 along party lines, the House Judiciary Committee said that Rove had broke the law by failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations of White House influence over the Justice Department, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Democrats such as former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.

The committee decision is only a recommendation, and it was unclear whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would allow a final vote. Rove has denied any involvement with Justice decisions, and the White House has said Congress has no authority to compel testimony from current and former advisers.

    • you guy are so gullible, so 20 democrats have contempt for karl rove--what they really trying to cover up is their own ineptitude.
karl rove does not tell the A.G who to prosecute it is a lame made up charge with nothing to back it up.
And you guys are calling for justice, for what? Gore and Kerry losing the elections? ur idea of justice is trying to get at the administration by leveling phony charges against its advisors by their political opponents. In what fairytale world is that justice? easy on the koolaid

They are all trying to protect their own asses. When a man can commit treason, throw elections and politicize our justice system and Republicans in congress choose to overlook it is a travesty. What has happened to the United States of America?

    • I have personally held Karl Rove and the entire Bush administration in contempt for years. Finally, our Congress has followed suit (legally speaking). The world served as witness as George W. Bush led the U.S. into an unwarranted war in Iraq. Just a reminder for anyone who still doesn't get it - Iraq had NOTHING to do with the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Sure, Saddam was a tyrant, but by what right did the U.S. invade a sovereign nation, hunt down, put on trial, and then execute a head of state. How many other tyrants and bloodthirsty rulers did Bush allow to continue their bloodthirsty ways? Genocide in Rwanda drew yawns from this administration. Now, the world watches as recently-captured former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic stands before the War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague. Why is it so hard to imagine Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rove, Rice, et al standing before a War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague? Why do Americans assume immunity for our leaders? They are not untouchable.

They can call it "political expediency", they can call it "political opportunism", they can call it what ever they want to. I call it disgusting. I call it dishonorable, reprehensible, disgraceful, corrupt, and evil to the core. BOTH of those dominant political parties need to go.

What can we do in a country that prides itself on ignoring others and selfishness. Rove did what he was allowed. Fuck Pelosi she is the first woman speaker and she would rather keep her position than stand up for what is right. Time for every one to wake up and see that politicians will only go sofar as voting for the lesser of two evils. its the best they can do given the system. When is Gore going to grow a pair and get back into a leadership position. Yea you Al. The guy who gave his presidency to the courts over the people. When are you going to fix your mistake? When are you going to take what was really yours? Stop being a puss and take the wheel. Time to push the button or let mental fucks who abuse power under the name of Jesus take over. Al you do not belong behind the scenes.

Me personally I think this whole administration should be under a big investigation and be charged with multiple counts of War Crimes and investigate the mysterious rise is high gas prices. We as a Nation need to get together and make an example of this people and really practice our rights as a Democracy.

    • It isnt going anywhere as long as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed are holding the reins. How or why did the people ever send Nancy Pelosi to represent them? Did it ever occur to the populace that all and I repeat all politicians are supposed to be public servants. However the Old dictionary defines politicians as: "One who is interested in personal or partisan gain and other selfish interest." based on this definition, serving the public is not in thje interest of politics. Also since they have all been quite busy altering the constitution to fit their agenda, I can see that since Congress and The Senate are merely selfserving, I would suggest we fire all of them all and and install one man selected from all of America to rule over congress and one man in the Senate to represent the people. The Common people can control one person but 500 plus all of the other featherbedders are not so easy. A dictatorship is not a bad word but when you get then thousand politicians who have convinced the public that they are needed for checks and balances. bah One intelligent politician for leading this country is all that is needed. All others are common employees. Checks and balances are a farce.

At this point, it's up to the Justice Department to prosecute all these no-show contemptible people (Bolten, Miers, Rove), and they've indicated they won't be doing so. All the more reason to get a Democratic administration in there, who WILL prosecute.

I knew this administration would take us down the toilet, but most Americans thought good-Texas-cowboy values were in order. Look what that has gotten us: greed, corruption and outrageous debt. Republican policies don't work because they favor the rich. Why can't people see that?

Don't feel guilty. I'm happy with what I did. This is a president that stands up for what he believes is the best for the country.
He is humble - if you actually listen to more than sound bites you will see that.
He is compassionate and listens not to polls generated by people that probably don't know first hand about the issues. BECAUSE...
He listens to people i.e. Generals, if you want to talk about the war... That know what is going on, and makes decisions based on fact. Not emotion.

Do you realize how much easier it would be for him to just take polls like other politicians have and do accordingly? It takes true character to do what is right even when the misinformed public criticizes him at every turn.

You know people are sinking to lower and lower levels when they have to cut clips and make fun of the most trivial of things. Seriously. Think about it.

Oh and PS I am not rich. I live under the poverty line, and it IS NOT the president's fault in the least. It's amazing how people blame the president for their personal problems. Man up guys / gals. Take some responsibility for your own situation.

The myth that Republicans are rich, Demos are for the poor, that's a load of propaganda. Just FYI.

    • Libby had his sentence commuted, he was not (yet) pardoned.

Accepting a pardon assumes an admission of guilt and exempts the accused from prosecution. A pardon acts like a grant of immunity in that in the absence of penalty, the fifth amendment no longer applies and one can be compelled to offer testimony.

Bush is not about to pardon any of his cronies anytime soon.

      arcticspirit,

it's also not politically correct (or legal, or moral) to manipulate voters by smear campaign, misrepresenting oneself, or by not responding to a subpoena.

serious criminals are quite often humiliated in prisons, and in the media, so why's it hurt to hate on someone, who is a criminal, who's hated on and affected so many in his lifetime, not just in our country?

ok, so i feel a little harsh about him, but it's just my opinion.

Given the weight of the Bush administration corruption that increases on a daily basis now...that argument doesn't even hold spit. They need to be accountable like everyone else.
