Pentagon OKs over $10 billion in arms sales for Iraq

Image
Vierotchka
What on earth does Iraq need over $10 billion in weapons for? There already are far too many there. Meanwhile, Iraq's infrastructure is in shambles, no water, no sewage treatment, no electricity most of the time, countless homes and schools and hospitals in ruins, millions of refugees both domestically and in neighbouring countries, a dramatic dearth of medicines and hospital supplies and equipment, hunger for most of the population - and the US is taking $10 billion from Iraq in exchange for weapons in a country that is rife with lethal violence.

    • It's simple...Iraq is running out of weapons and America wants it to be a "fair fight" so they decided to sell them ten billion dollars worth to even up the odds!

    • $10bn is a crazy amount to spend on something which is so unjustified. $10bn could make huge strides into renewable energy or health research.

    • Big oil and the armament industry are big money. You should see some of the accounting tendencies of KBR. They have highlighted some of it in the media. It is all shocking.

    • Moral of the story?

A country must create its own democracy, if that is what it chooses to do. A country that has had democracy forced down it's throat, well, they make good customers for our weapons manufacturers.

    • You're all liberal hippies. The US is not giving the weapons to the terrorists, they're giving it to the government and police who are stopping the terrorists. How are the Iraq people supposed to live in peace if they don't have ways to defend themselves?

      -----"You're all liberal hippies."---------

LMAO!!!!!! I haven't had a tie dyed Tshirt in 40 years.

      I'm a Viet Nam veteran.

The government is handing out cash and weapons to Iraqi mafiosi to try and "buy" a puppet regime they can dictate orders too. The same as they did with Thieu in Viet Nam. It didn't work there either.

It is the same people, doing the same things that didn' work in Viet Nam, doing exactly the same things in Iraq. The only thing they learned is to try to hide things from the American people better than they did the first time around. Oh yes, hide things, and get the "Patriot Act" pushed through so they can suspend citizens rights under the Constitution. They did learn that.

If the US pulled out and were no longer supplying guns and cash to criminal gangs to buy control, the Iraqi people would not have to defend themselves, and there would be no terrorists.

    • it is no differance to what is happening here. we spend so much more on developement of new tec.
then we see these politicians say their is no money for social security. no money for schools ,no money for new orleans or any other place that was hit by storms or devistated by natioral disasters.we are all accoutable. many do not vote no one sends letters to their congressmen. try it and see what happens. we need to force the politicians and the news agencies to confront these issues, it needs to be out in the public. so all the people can be educated on these issues that are never spoken of.

    • This is the real reason we are in Iraq, along with oil.

Dwight D. Eisenhower warned you 50 years ago about the military/industrial complex.

George W. Bush and Dick Chenney embody EVERYTHING that Ike warned about--even down to covering up and lying about scientific findings to support their policies.

If you don't believe it, google Eisenhower Farewell speech and listen to it for yourself. None of this should be a surprise to anyone.

    • This is exactly the same strategy/mentality the US had with Saddam when they armed him against Iran and the Kurds.

This jaunt in Iraq is going to fail miserably and give Arabs one more reason to hate the U.S.

This is exactly why we should not have invaded Iraq.

      Besides killing people bad.

    • 10 billion dollars... 10 billion dollars?!

We've spent $400 billion in our little combined project with Iraq and Afghanistan already, and what has it gotten us? We could've done so many better things than killing innocents with $400 billion! If we were to attack every nation that threatened us the tiniest bit as we have in Iraq, the United States would have to start asking Donald Trump for loans.

      DUMB ASS PRESIDENT BUSH!

The amount spent this year alone is more than twice that amount. Bush requested over $900 Billion for 2009.

    • Your right, it isn't evil to do this but the only thing is that this money is only going to be used for fire arms. Yes, its a good thing but to have to end conflict with weapons is never the right thing to do in my opinion. No worries, no hate mail from me. I attack the argument, not the people. I respect the point your trying to make. We are all here to give our opinions on this website. This is what it's all about.

    • (preparing for the hate mail as I sit here)

I believe the purpose of this, is to allow the Iraq military force in Iraq to gain control over cities and lands that the warlords and the remaining talablan, insurgents, etc, are trying to hold.

They had nothing but long dresses and head things before (not trying to be disrespectful), and to take over so our troops can come home, yeah the do need some cool gear!

Truly it isn't evil to do this... (laughs and shakes her head).

There are no Taliban in Iraq. There are no insurgents, either - insurgents are those who fight a legal authority/government; the Iraqi government was set in place by the USA through elections organized and controled by the USA, and even the Iraqi constitution was dictated by the USA, all this being illegal. Therefore, the Iraqi government has no basis in legality.

"They had nothing but long dresses and head things before " - this is total nonsense which smacks of racism. Iraq was the most westernized, advanced, and civilized society in the Middle East until the US and the UK attacked, invaded, occupied and pillaged it.

And here's the real question. What happens when a government not friendly to (read: installed by) America comes to power? Will we see these weapons again only this time pointed at us? This is the very definition of insanity.

That's what I am saying how does a 10 billion sale make up for all the money we've spent there so far? A very bad return on the investment since that's not even a years worth out of the last 6.

    • This settles it. This is one of the reasons why we can't take the next steps in making the world a better place (Look for china and renewable energy and see why the U.S. can't go further and how china "can"). That is 10 million going to the war (for weapons and possibly many other things, government has a rep for not telling us everything. not to be offensive but moving on...). That money can be going to the poor or other things of importance. Like how KRAG2112 has said i think we all can agree that we are indeed "beyond outrage" from 9/11. That event was disgusting to me and i was outraged but how long have we been fighting in this war? How can you take out all the terrorists in the world? If someone can answer that, i will bow down to you and give you props because i can't seem to find the answer. For example, it's like sending a group full of dogs to take out all the cats in the world. And even then, how long will the dogs last before they make the choice of "screw this! Been doing this for years..Want out!" Everyone would rather be home. We are not robots. You can tell us for sure to do something and we can get it done but how long do they expect you to last? It is also a mental state of mind. Did you know that some soldiers are deciding to commit suicide? They have no hope left. I wouldn't for sure.
anyway, my point is that this money should really be going for other things. Things that matter in the world. Our soldiers are tired and they want to go home. I know that some of you might have relatives in Iraq (if you guys do) and you miss them but enough is enough. They are just as tired as anyone else would be.
Beyond this; the next presidential election will be interesting and i can't wait for it.

    • What on earth does Iraq need over $10 billion in weapons for? Why to help us in the upcoming war on Iran of course.

Of course you could always take the more cynical view that this is simply a handout, from US taxpayers to American defense contractors, to ensure that US defense contractors have plenty of cash on hand for political contributions to the campaigns of candidates that will support further military actions around the globe, ensuring the continued profits of defense contractors, allowing further contributions, and around and around we go.

$10 Billion may not buy all that much military hardware, but it sure will buy you a few Senators.

This is a classic example of the poison conservatism
offers to US and the world!

In order to have real infrastructure that extends water, electricity, gas etc. you need to be armed to the hilt!

More Bush cronies making a lot of cash on the misery of the world!

What comes first the chicken or the egg?

Or what comes first peace or a rocket launcher/automatic weapon?

Busha and Co. love this deal. If you look at the history of the Bush family they have been nothing but dealers in death for four generations. Arms and bombs are their money makers. The family thrives on death and destruction. The entire family should be in prsion for crimes against humanity. The family is a bunch of death dealig trash. Study thier history. Nothing about these greedy killers should surprise anyone who has read about thier past achievements in death and war.
