The use of long-term bed and breakfast accommodation for women and children has more than trebled since 2003, despite a government commitment to end the practice. The majority of adults in temporary housing are single mothers, according to new figures.
The report by the Conservative Party, entitled Women and Homelessness, will highlight the growing numbers of "hidden homeless". The Government has pledged to halve the number of people in temporary accommodation by 2010.
The report reveals 144,000 women are currently on council waiting lists – a rise of 77 per cent in five years. These figures are based on information obtained from 248 councils throughout England and Wales.
The number of women placed in temporary accommodation went up by more than 50 per cent between 2003 and 2007 to 24,428. That figure includes 1,328 women who spent more than six weeks in B&B accommodation – a 330 per cent increase from 2003.
Hostels and B&Bs are often in undesirable areas. One in five women become homeless to escape violence and many more have been abused in the past. Yet 170 out of 248 councils have no women-only hostels.
Homeless charities warn that the situation is worse than the figures suggest, as thousands of homeless women are turned away by councils and so remain hidden from official figures. Councils have narrowed their eligibility criteria as they struggle to cope with growing demands.
Women in temporary housing are at greater risk of violence and of suffering from poor physical and mental health. The problem is also known to have a detrimental effect on the health and education of children. Campaigners and opposition parties are calling on the Government to provide more help for homeless women, insisting that more social and affordable housing be built urgently.
What do you think that the government should do to help those women forced into homelessness and insecure housing? Is the issue of homeless amongst women a more serious one than for men? And what can individuals do to help homeless women and men?

Now that there are all these homeless women AND men the next step should be to create a dating website for them. They could access it at public libraries. Homeless hook-up? Anyone?

One Christmas I volunteered in a local soup kitchen. The church invited 25 families for a turkey dinner, and I expected them to be your stereotypical homeless. Instead they were people I recognized from around town. Mothers with kids and some single men who l would never have thought were living in complete poverty. I mean, this is a pretty decent suburb, so the concept of poverty/homelessness here was alien to me. It really was an eye opener.

This article fails to point out that many womwn only shelters dont allow boys over the age of 12 to reside in their facilities. This can cause some mothers to be refused shelter based on a gender biased principle. Also this can expose the corruption within our infrastructure caused by SS Title IV-D. A federal incentive program that makes Family court employees and CPS caseworkers put children and families in states of poverty in an effort to fatten their own wallets. All too often children are put in an impoverished home so the government can collect on the funds given to them by SS Title IV-D for having an overactive system.

Why should this Country have any homeless people? Our house, is a very, very, fine house. With two cats in the yard. Life used too be so hard.

I see this as a byproduct of two problems. One being the mortgage crisis and the other is the high divorce rate. If you split families apart in the middle of an economic crisis, these are the kind of issues that arise.

The idea of having to go from shelter to shelter and eventually the streets is a foreign concept for me. I think there is no better safety net than family. If ever I were to fall on hard times, I know I have an aunt, an uncle, or a cousin I crash at until I get on my feet. I think we'll find a strong correlation between the two findings.

I wonder why the research focused on women? Why not both? What there should be is a solution. But, that would be quite hard due to our failing economy.

Homelessness diminishes us all whether female or male. It is a national shame when children are homeless and never know the security of home whether it is one room or several. When children do not know the safety of friends and neighbors and have green areas to play we end up with rage, apathy, addiction, terrorism, and a society that has lost its way.

can anyone know everything about a certain race or gender?? we are all individuals, and ive never seen such generalizations work. Feminism as a gender equality movement was one of the best things to happen to America. Now (forgive the pun) feminism has shifted on a mainstream level to be anti-male. Even early feminists have denounced the modern policies. (Susan Sarandon to be one of them) Lets forget gender and obsolete gender roles and quit being selfish when it comes to the children. The children have the right to be equally involved with both fit and loving parents.

Homeless women, especially mothers, are much more vulnerable to violence and manipulation on the street. Homeless men can take care of themselves differently than women. I think the increase of homeless women is indicative of how rising costs of living and no increase in wages is really pushing people down.

the sad truth of this is these are not just the "homeless" we have come to accept, i.e. drug users, mentally ill, very low income. I have read of women in Santa Barbara, CA that have jobs and education that cannot afford the rents in their area and a shelter has opened a parking lot with guards for women to sleep in their cars with their pets.
This is a National Outrage and Shame whatever the country.
