Ifans, 40, who sprang to fame in the film Notting Hill, was asked by the station Q Radio to comment on a track by the band the Gutter Twins. The Welsh star expressed his enthusiasm for the act by saying: "It's kind of like being date raped, which I like."
When pressed further by the presenter on whether date rape was a good thing, Ifans added: "Well yeah, for guys."
Graham Rhodes of the Roofie Foundation, Britain's only helpline for victims of drug-related rape, was enraged by the comments. "If he wants to retract that, it would be nice for the 9,000 people who have been drug raped in the past 12 years. It shows a total lack of understanding and compassion for the issues. I hope everyone boycotts everything he does now."
The interview with Q Radio is part of Ifans's attempt to break into music. He has set up a band, the Peth, with Dafydd Ieuan of Super Furry Animals.
Earlier this year he made a joke about paedophilia at a concert organised to raise money to end child slavery and prostitution: "Why is paedophilia so popular?" he said at the event. "Because kids are so fucking sexy."
A dark sense of humour or a joke taken too far? Do 'celebrities' have a responsibility not to make jokes like this when people are horribly affected by the things they're laughing at?

I suspect these comments were very premeditated and designed to court controversy.
Either that or Rhys obviously forgot the number one rule when dealing with live media - engage brain before opening mouth.

Comedians make jokes like this, and much worse, all the time. I suppose it's about where you can and can't get away with making this type of joke.
To me, that is what it was intended to be, a joke.

i'm sure was intended as dark 'Welsh' humour.. my concern is the growing number of tabloid fodder's using heavy subjects such as 'rape' to gain exposure.

It's irresponsible but in the context it was clearly a joke. Very dark humour, admittedly...

Oh my goodness, people need to quit taking themselves so seriously and get a sense of humor. While some may not want to laugh at what he said, the comments were clearly meant as a joke. It is utterly stupid for anyone to pursue the issue further. It's like if some child were playing with a plastic gun and people got bent out of shape because humans kill each other with real guns.

I can't imagine he was being totally serious. It's his sense of humour. I think by now people should sort of get this by now and not be so sensitive when he makes stupid comments like this. It's not like he's running for public office and using this as his campaign slogan.

McCain maybe, but his slogan about chips really doesn't cut the mustard.

It's an off the cuff quip, I hardly think it's his manifesto on rape.
as for the paedophilia joke Frankie Boyle made a similar one on Mock the week in a recent series. It actually a pretty old joke, I've heard and told myself.having a dark sense of humour does not indicate a lack of morals. Making a joke about a subject does not indicate support for it.
Joan Rivers jokes about her husbands suicide. Do you think she wanted him to kill himself, or that she's happy? Off course not.
There must be no subjects taboo for humour.
"Do 'celebrities' have a responsibility not to make jokes like this?" absolutely not. He's not in Westlife.

He is just an unattractive man desperately trying to be funny and provocative to get some attention. In addition to being tactless, his jokes are not even remotely witty.

It's observational humour insofar as to say, most news stories of Date-rape are women being the victims, and little to none about men being raped. A similar trend can be seen about domestic violence (if you watch Cop Reality shows it suggests that all domestic situations is the man beating the woman, and none about women beating men.
It's still somewhat crude but it's only a joke and should not be seen as an aspect of his personality but more of the Celebrity character, his fame has relied on tasteless homour.
Oh and to the writers of the article why not Twin Town (1997) a far better film with him as a lead role and not supporting. - 3 years ago

It is possible. A combination of drugs can cause a guy to pass out and achieve erection. Just because it's not in the media limelight does not mean it doesn't happen.

Who cares? He can say what he wants to say. I hate that people in the spotlight like artists and actors always have to watch what they say. It's stupid.

He was just being a comedian, it's called observational humour. Of course, date rape would never be enjoyable, as it involves getting heavily drugged and loosing motor skills.

Ifans's sense of humor is like a KKK member dropping in on an NAACP meeting. If he wasn't famous, the anti-rape and anti-prostitution activists would already have whupped his ass.
