Parents not allowed to photograph children in gym gear for fear of paedophiles

Scottish parents and coaches have been warned not to photograph young athletes wearing gym gear for fear of paedophiles on the internet.

According to governing body Scottish Gymnastics, photographs of youngsters between the age of 5 and 16 should only be taken if they are wearing tracksuits. All other images were deemed “unsuitable” and parents were advised to destroy photographs showing children in a “potentially provocative” pose. The organisation stated that the alternative would be to ban filming and photography altogether at sporting events or competitions.

The new rules have caused some controversy and are regarded by a needless overreaction by some.

Sociology professor Frank Furedi, for instance, considers the growing trend of restricting photography of children at public events as counter-productive and unnecessary: "The assumption that pictures represent a significant threat to children has acquired a fantasy-like grotesque character. Tragically, what the dramatisation and criminalisation of the act of photographing children reveals is a culture that regards virtually every childhood experience from the standpoint of a paedophile. The default position is to always expect the worst."

What is your take on the issue? Do the new rules make sense or are people just overreacting?

    • People need to stop overreacting.

What about Huggies adverts, or clothes catologes for kids.

Rather have nonces look at these pictures then actual child porn.

    • This isn't funny, it's sad.

Fear of something can be more damaging than the thing itself. A few unfortunate children who are assaulted shouldn't stop the other ones from enjoying their childhood: taking photos is a big part of enjoying events.

    • If we get rid of gymnastics we won't have to worry about anyone taking pictures.

If we get rid of swimming pools we won't have to worry about anyone seeing children in swimsuits.

If we get rid of schools pedophiles won't have anywhere to hang out and try to molest children.

If we keep them locked up in the house and put bedsheets over them whenever they do need to go out we don't have to worry about pedophiles getting to them.
