Lad mags 'linked to social ills'

Shadow education secretary Michael Gove is expected to link the magazines to relationship breakdown and fatherless children in a high-profile speech, the BBC reports.
He intends to rebuke the magazines for their "instant-hit hedonism".
"Titles such as Nuts and Zoo paint a picture of women as permanently, lasciviously, uncomplicatedly available," his speech says.
"We should ask those who make profits out of revelling in, or encouraging, selfish irresponsibility among young men what they think they're doing.
"They celebrate thrill-seeking and instant gratification without ever allowing any thought of responsibility towards others, or commitment, to intrude."
He will stress the Conservative commitment to measures supporting marriage and the family - including use of the tax system - and suggest the drive to reduce teenage pregnancy should put more emphasis on making young men come to terms with their responsibilities.
What do you think? Do lads mags lead to disrespect for women and irresponsible behaviour amongst men? If so, are women's magazines - with their plethora of diets, shopping, and gossip - have just the same kinds of negative impacts on women? How much are we really affected by what we read?

I think all of these things have an effect; but it really depends on the resilience of the minds involved. Weak minded people are easily influenced, especially if they derive their identity from the media they are watching.
However, people who are not that easily influenced, they go on about their business and no one ever notices, because they aren't calling attention to themselves. They may well be engaging in a plethora of indulgences, but they take responsibility by using protection, birth control, etc. It has just become a reality of life to them.

Its funny that once women were fighting for the right to vote and be treated equally but there are now more lads mags and pornos on the shelves in newsagents then ever before.I don't think this is what those women for fighting for.
I ask where are all the Feminists gone. Check this video and tell if those women in the magazines are free to be who they compared to these women.

Even as a man these sorts of magazines make me feel very uncomfortable, I haven't read one since school.
I think that these magazines are just as bad for giving young men the wrong ideas about sexuality and lifestyle as they are for shaping some young men's view of women.

I can't stand most magazines because they all seem to think their readers are vapid idiots who think of nothing but big fake breasts and slutty-looking women, or makeup, celebrities, and losing weight to get her crush of the day.
Most magazine publishers look down on us as stupid little pop culture whores. Especially Cosmo. On every cover there's a story like this: "Best Sex Secrets!" "What Men Want!" "Don't leave home without these sex tips!" Is that what these girlzines think we're good for? "Pleasing" guys with retarded sex advice?

The people who make these mags must be very stupid.
Not every male is so horribly shallow as to not care about anything beyond staring at womens breasts and making unfunny 'guy jokes' and 'guy humour'.

I think Maggie thatchers policies of breaking people down and destroying communities with her "reforms" did far more damage to society than any magazine ever could.
And all the benfits are being reaped now. Those magazines are pretty harmless, hardcore underground edgy they ain't.
Women's mags, the cheap nasty ones, are spectacularly trashy and then there's heat et all, the scourge of the earth..Will this idiotic celeb obsession ever end?
As crap as they are, i'm not stupid enough to blame societies ills on them.

So these mags are 'encouraging, selfish irresponsibility among young men'. We're talking about adults here arn't we? If a couple of pictures of boobs and a squirrel swimming is going to scar you for life, then am screwed!
It might mentally affect some people who don't understand the difference between the real world and fantasy but i don't think Lad's mags are the worst of their problems.
In my own opinion womens mags are worse, some such as cosmo, glamour etc seem to enjoy revelling in the 'ladette' culture, Mens mags often take a light hearted approach where as a mag such as cosmo can give a very strong emotional impression on a topic. I feel just as mens mags present ideal women with curvy figures and large breasts womens mags present a warped view of the world.
One magzine has a feature about getting your boyfriend to give something up such as a football ticket so he can use that money on you and how much he would save! Magazines like this just promote waste, spend and consumerism while toying with the emotions of some people and showing the readers the ideal 'relationship' thats all one sided and how not conforming to their stereotypes makes you a bit wierd. Another thing is the claim to be helping women over come insecurities while every other page is filled with moviestars in flawless make up. There are soooo many problems especially with womens magazines about how they create unreal ideals about the opposite gender but as this Conservative MP shows the lads magazines problems are more obvious were as womens mags are not.

'Lads mags' may not be to everybodies taste however the women working for these kind of magazines want to be there. They are not forced to do anything they dont want to and earn decent saleries. If they want to display their bodies then it is their own choice. I do not think it leads to disrespect but rather respect to women as other girls look up to their confidence.
It may not be the best job in the world but its most definately not the worst.
I do not think mens attitudes towards women change because of these magazines, to read these magazines in the first place you must be quite insecure, shy, lonely or a complete idiot otherwise they would probably have a girlfriend. - 3 years ago

Lad's mags are plain stupid, there are so many more important things people could be reading. They're not the cause of anything though.

Men aren't idiots - they're capable of looking at pictures of these women without expecting the entire female race to suddenly dye their hair blonde and walk around in bikinis.
It's a little far-fetched to say these magazines are "encouraging selfish irresponsibility" amongst young men and overstates their importance just a little. If they're not claiming video games will all turn us into violent killers, MPs are picking on other youth staples like magazines or song lyrics. I find that MP to be selfishly irresponsible by picking on Lads' Mags to promote himself and further his career. A-ha! Touche me!

Media absolutely effect our perception of the world and influence -- often subconsciously -- the way we relate to others. If guys spend most of their time reading lad's mags, the disrespectful portrayal of women will eventually rub off into their consciousness. And I'd say yes, women's mags are equally harmful for women readers in shaping this image of the 'ideal' woman -- 'perfect' body, skin, hair, clothes, man, etc... and if you don't have it already, all you have to do is diet, exercise, and buy things.
Now, I'm not here to argue that these magazines should be banned, but the publishers and writers should think more about balancing content and making more responsible content choices. - 3 years ago
