Egyptian activists strive to halt female circumcision

SULTAN ZAWYIT, Egypt - In this small Nile River farming village, Maha Mohammed has started to doubt whether she should circumcise her two daughters.

A year ago, she had few qualms about female genital mutilation, the practice of cutting a girl's clitoris and sometimes other genitalia. She herself was cut two decades ago, and she fears her daughters will not find husbands otherwise.

But Mohammed also has heard that circumcision can be medically risky and emotionally painful. And a strong-willed neighbor, another woman, has been dropping by her house regularly to persuade her to say no.

"I hear that girls suffer not just physically but psychologically," the 31-year-old Mohammed said. "But I am afraid. I don't want my daughters to have uncontrollable demands for sex."

Such doubts are significant. With vigorous grass-roots campaigns and the passage of tough laws against circumcision, Egypt seems to be making a dent in this deeply ingrained practice, which is thousands of years old. The number of young girls circumcised is now steadily declining in a country where an estimated 96 percent of married Egyptian women have had their genitals cut.

The most recent comprehensive study predicts about 63 percent of Egyptian girls 9 years old and under will be circumcised over the next decade. The numbers are lower in urban areas like Cairo - about 40 percent - but higher for rural areas in the south - about 78 percent, the government's 2005 demographic and health survey predicts.

    • As others are saying here, it is both sexist and ethnocentric to condone male circumcision in the US while condemning female circumcision in Africa. The bottom line is: all humans have the basic human right to keep all of the body parts with which they are born. It doesn't matter if you are a girl in Nigeria or a boy in Detroit. No one has the right to mutilate a child's genitals. That is sexual abuse, plain and simple. And religion is not an excuse.

    • There is a great need of a massive effort to get people educated, so they can actually distinguish between myth and reality. Then people will behave more rationally !

    • Yes, it's horrible and no, I don't condone it. But this is an example of OUR culture feeling exceptional in the face of others. Automatically, we feel that our views are right and those who disagree are wrong. This is a centuries old practice not just in Egypt but in many places. They are not barbaric or all evil people.

But I do know you can do shit to a child that you cant do to an adult. You laid down and had sex to make a baby, now you wanna control how that child has sex. Playing God are we. Im done talking about child abusers. Im not from there by far but man I dont like the victimization.

    • J Jammer is completly right. But here is America, we circumsize most of our men. This leave them with substantially less sensitivity in that area. Is this anymore right? I dont know, I'll just flip a coin for my son.

Why rely on flipping a coin? Just make a sane decision. I grew up in Europe, but live in the States. I've had male lovers both uncircumcised and circumcised. My uncircumcised lovers had way more sensitivity and received a lot more pleasure because of it. My current partner is uncircumcised and it feels much better for both of us.

    • You know there are a few serial killers that took it upon themselves to carve out the vagina after killing the woman. It must be a sick fascination with seeing pain in women that drive men to be so demanding of such a tradition.

    • Education is the key. I know of plenty of women who have their clitoris and are not "controlled by sex". Seems to me this is a myth perpetrated by some jerkwad middle eastern king who didnt know how to please a woman.

    • Agh...it sounds so painful. But these are their beliefs, and I don't feel we should call these people "shameless" for their beliefs. It's good to know that the number of mutilations is beginning to decrease.

Maybe I missed it, but I do not see where anyone called the people who practice this shameless...

I agree, to each their own, but some things are just too extreme for me to understand.

    • Uh, no it didn't.

It was started in the U.S. for religious reasons, to prevent boys from masturbating because people thought that was offensive to Jesus. Cleanliness was part of it, but the main reasons were sexual.

Regardless, male circumcision is also extremely painful, invasive and serves no purpose other than to control men's sexuality. It does not keep things cleaner and it does not prevent disease.

Sounds like you're just as ignorant as the people you're trying to "educate."

If you believe in circumcision, you are a hypocrite and are equally as idiotic as the people that believe in removing the clitoris.

It's funny how people are willing to jump on the bandwagon acting like other cultures are wrong and how we need to stop them yet make excuses for their own cultural bullshit. Sounds vaguely white man's burden to me. Especially disgusting in this case as male circumcision is nearly the same practice.

Sorry Saladin, but it was actually started by the Hebrews back in the Old Testament times. Circumcision...God....Covenant.

No, I didn't. But I guess that's what you'd say when you have nothing to argue.

I'm just tired of hypocrites like you who pretend like you champion human rights but really are nothing more than a sheep who follows a crowd.

Yes female mutilation is right and horrible, too bad male mutilation happens right here and you think it's fine and dandy.

You sound like a fucking idiot to me.

I'm sorry I'm passionate about a subject that affects me.

Maybe you'd feel the same way if you had your clitoris ripped off of you and someone told you it was just fine and normal.

You know nothing about the procedure and you call me an ignorant douche?

Sounds more like you have nothing to argue and you know you're wrong, but you're too fucking stubborn to admit it.

      That's predisposition for ya.

Since apparently no one on the internet can convince someone of anything, let me ask you a series of logical questions so that you can reach the conclusion on your own.

Why do we circumcise little boys? What medical purpose does it serve? Why was it started in the first place? Is there any reason to continue it? Why is it that reputable government medical organizations in countries that practice circumcision recommend parents not to do it? Why is it considered mutilation to remove the clitoris but considered normal to remove a part of the penis?

Please don't reply unless you actually have something to say.

someone sounds angry... hummm. i had responded about how circumcision is not the same as cutting off a womans clitoris because if you know how the human body is made they are not the same. yes, by all means a woman who has had this done to her could technically still have an orgasm- but that would be reallllllyyy not the same as if she had one. this is not an argument FOR circumcision for men, it is one against mutilating women. in addition, i have read so many accounts of women having this done in the most horrible situations and getting very sick from it. in addition they don't always just stop at the clitoris, some completely cut away the area. it is really awful and painful and can cause infection and worse.

i am suprised at the anger that seems to come through in your responses- it makes me wonder what you are mad at

"yes, by all means a woman who has had this done to her could technically still have an orgasm- but that would be reallllllyyy not the same as if she had one."

Then you agree with my argument, it's the same thing with removing the foreskin.

Obviously it's not physically the same. Duh, I understand that. What's your point? Have you ever SEEN a circumcision? The child is in immense pain. What difference does it make that the parts are different? That's fucking stupid. It serves the exact same purpose and hurts just as much for boys.

And since you're not arguing in favor of it, what ARE you arguing? That you don't agree with it but it's not that big of a deal? That it is a big deal but why am I being so serious about it?

And it's not as if little boys in countries where this practiced don't get infections or otherwise fucked up from bad medical practice. Hell, there is a 0.5% failure rate HERE in the U.S. where a child is permanently disabled because the procedure goes wrong.

"i am suprised at the anger that seems to come through in your responses- it makes me wonder what you are mad at"

If you had your clitoris removed and someone said this to you, how would you feel? Oh no, I shouldn't be angry about being sexually mutilated for life, I should just be calm and happy right?

How can you be against the removal of the clitoris and for circumcision? How can you honestly feel that these people are ignorant and backwards yet support the same procedure for men in our country?

Did you ever consider that maybe they feel the same way about female clitoris removal that we do about male circumcision?

If you don't support mutilation, how can you support circumcision?

If you don't support circumcision, why in the -fuck- do you not give it the same weight as the removal of the clitoris?

    • I agree that these cultures need to be educated, but I don't think that it will do much good. They seem to look for whatever way possible to control and repress their women. I posted this because I am disgusted by this form of terrorism, but I am also that much more appreciative to live in a culture where a woman's sexuality is revered rather than treated like something to be ashamed of, and I am thankful for that.

    • Great.

Now the next step is to stop the mutilation of mens' foreskins via circumcision.

You guys do all know that removal of the foreskin has the exact same purpose right?

Hm, no. Male circumcision began as a hygenic tool to keep the sand out of the urethra. Over time it became socially acceptable. I can see the argument on this one coming... How come female circumcision is so horrifying? Because it is extremely painful, invasive, and serves no purpose except to control a woman's sexuality... or to control period. That is wrong. Parents have a choice on wether or not to circumcize their baby boys... Would you ever consider to do the same to your baby girl?

Sorry, parents do not always have the option to choose whether or not to circumcise their sons. Doctors will even perform circumcision without asking the parents. They do the same thing with children who are both with both female or male organs. They decide based on which is more prevalent and take actions on choosing either gender.

Circumcision is bad for women AND men. It does nothing.

Ummmm... really? Did you think about this before you said it? I'm pretty sure my circumsized boyfriend is really happy sexually- and i'm equally as sure that i would not be if someone cut me up. Honestly, this lack of info on the human body is astounding.

Anglcazn- I don't know if you have kids or not or what country you live in, but I had to pay $300 and schedule an appointment with a different doctor to have my son circumcised. His Father wanted it done, I didn't have a preference. I know there have been cases in some states where doctors have proceeded to do the circumcision and then just add it to the medical bill, but that is not okay and is not a common practice. That doctor should be sued for malpractice. You should avoid making general assumptions based on case by case scenarios. :)

Many people without their clitoris are perfectly capable of orgasm, what's your point?

Oh right, you don't have one. As evidenced by your saying "this lack of info on the human body." Last time I checked, the foreskin was a natural part of the human body that is cut off for no medical reason. Ignorance is not an argument.

The foreskin has over 50,000 nerve endings in it and circumcision is an utterly pointless procedure. It was started in the U.S. for the purpose of preventing male masturbation.

Can you actually argue in favor of circumcision? Do you actually even know anything about it? Or are you just arguing for the stake of status quo?

And would you make that same argument for the removal of the clitoris JJ? I think not.

In fact, that argument is useless in any situation. Because I don't know everything I know nothing? Come back when you actually have something to say.

Give me a REASON why we should continue to do circumcision. Do you have one?

No, you don't. You just can't accept the fact that your culture is as stupid ass theirs.

No, I don't know exactly how it would feel if I actually had one. I do know that I can have sex for hours and not orgasm though. Regardless of that, why in the fuck SHOULD it be cut off? Especially after it's been proven to reduce sexual pleasure AND was STARTED for that reason?

Stop wasting my time with this stupid bullshit.

Okay, I understand their pov [to a certain degree]

but to circumcise your daughter's clitoris and other genitalia is just horrible.

& its stupid, if your trying to help/protect your daughter's future by doing this. You are actually hurting their future.

the cultures that practice female circumcision do it because they think it controls their women's undesired sexual advances on men. but it is okay for men to rape their women whenever they want. research this topic and you will learn that many women in these cultures have been raped by their own husbands on many occasions.

it appears that they do not value their women at all, and see them as nothing more than a servant for a man.
