Dell Is now 100% carbon neutral, reaching goal 5 months ahead of schedule

'Dell has set some pretty aggressive green goals for itself in the past few years, and the big one is that they are now completely carbon neutral when it comes to their energy use, and 5 months ahead of schedule to boot!
They even did things in the right order. First, they started with efficiency measures in their operations around the world, then they purchased green power (which can sometimes be limited by local supply, Dane Parker, Dell's director of global environmental health and safety programs, told us on the phone yesterday), and then purchased verified emission reductions and renewable energy certificates for the rest.
But that's not all. They are also partnering with Conservation International to protect 591,000 acres of threatened tropical forest habitats in Madagascar. This should prevent more than 500,000 tons of CO2 from going into the atmosphere over the next five years.'

If this is entirely true, they will set a great example for other corporations to follow. People must demand this from all corporations who have been profiting at the expense of the environment far too long.

Very cool. Now they need to quit outsourcing the customer service jobs to India.

Even if they aren't perfect, and there products aren't #1, Dell is still a model for how all other companies can cut down on carbon emissions, even if not to the zero mark.

Yes only Apple runs a US-based call center but there was a proposal to run a call center in India. Although nobody on the board agreed to it.
I agree with DevilX, all computers are made up of pretty much the same parts. The one thing that stands Apple apart from the rest is the OS. So be upset with Microsoft.

Yes but it is their OS that keeps them alive.
It didn't just get disapproved by the board, within 3 days of the idea going public their stock was affected. They quickly recanted the idea.

I will agree on how Apple OS is awesome, I can't deny that. I just don't like how the company is ran. Sure all their support is US based, and I give lots of credit to Apple for that, but have you ever talked to their tech support? They don't outsource, they "in"source. Seems like all the tech support is from India. But I don't blame the company, I blame the US Edu dept for that one :)
But, in all seriousness, if one truly knows how to use a CPU, then Microsoft wouldn't be bad. To be honest, I have more issues with my iMac then I do on the 2 Vista Ran computers and the 1 XP ran computer in my house. Maybe it's because I'm not too familiar with the GUI interface compared to the BIOS. But I know how to use BIOS so I RARELY have issues with it.

Just because they purchased carbon credits does not mean they don't use toxic materials in their computers, or that their computers are pretty shitty, or the fact that they have all but the government-purchased (including private employee purchasing) tech support via phone shipped out to India....
Last time I checked only Apple still ran a US-based call center.

Yes, this is World Wide. My Dad works for Dell and this has been the talk for a while now.
I love how everyone disses Dell for being a "lousy" computer. People, educate yourselves before speaking, please. ALL COMPUTERS, INCLUDING APPLE, are made of the same items. Get pissed at NVIDIA, SATA, SolidState, not the name on the front of the computers.
And I can't believe all of you buy into this hype of the proprietary Apple, Inc. I work for this company and they disgust me, I'll be leaving within the next month.
EDIT: Also, if Dell is such a shitty, expensive computer (which makes me laugh because you all buy into the Apple monopoly), why do so many businesses rely on Dell? Hrm, I don't think a shitty computer will be trusted by the Government, by the banks, etc...

That's great news! Now if only they could get their website to work and their customer service to properly answer questions, I could respect them as a company!
I got a gift card for their site a while back and I simply can't wait until it's all used up. Still, this makes me think enduring the hell of ordering Dell products might be a noble sword to throw myself upon.

Dell used to be the bomb back when they first came out. Now they are trash. They are making an effort though.
My question is, how do they plan on protecting 591,000 acres of threatened tropical forest habitats in Madagascar when they can't even keep their lawn green?

renewable energy certificates? verified emission reductions?
More bullshit to confuse the masses- Keep in mind folks that Dell isn't polluting any less- they are simply buying credits and claiming them- It's like the buying a copyright and saying you invented the thing you bought the copyright for.
The whole thing is very misleading.
