Obama pledges support for gay families

Image
JanaPokana
Barack Obama has pledged to work towards the elimination of discrimination against LGBT families if elected.

The new statements regarding LGBT issues were made in a response to a letter by the Family Equality Council (FEC) asking candidates to outline their plans to "recognise, respect, protect and celebrate all of the loving families [they] seek to represent."

John McCain, who failed to respond to the FEC letter, said in an interview with the New York Times last month that he does not believe gay people should adopt children.

Obama, on the other hand, emphasised: "I'll be a President that stands up for American families; all of them. The desire to build a life with a loved one, to provide for a family and to have children who will grow and thrive; these are desires that all people share, regardless of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity."

"We ... have to do more to support and strengthen LGBT families. Because equality in relationship, family, and adoption rights is not some abstract principle; it's about whether millions of LGBT Americans can finally live lives marked by dignity and freedom."

Senator Obama listed more funding for after-school programmes, the abolition of the federal ban on same-sex marriage, an end to discrimination against LGBT families and "equal treatment in our family and adoption laws" as goals for his administration.

    • Well, like all politics, they love to say what we want to hear, but when it comes time to take action, they tend to stall. I hope he sticks to this and proves to us he is the best choice for us homosexuals.

    • Vitamin,

It is not hard to understand that denying children the right to a father or a mother will have great consequences on the upbringing of a child.

      Everything else is a banded.

It is just common sense. You can deny this all the way to your grave but I know that every one has an original mind, a voice inside that is telling us that it is true

Every parent, grand parent, husband or wife who have raised their own chidren know in the deepest part of themselves that it is true.

Every child, if the could speak will also want a dad and a mom

Mothers cannot provide to their children what a father give to his children. They know this deeply.

All those agenda based pundits that are trying to brainwash us to the contrary cannot twist basic truth for ever.

Those who have been disappointed by their own family and parenting situation may use false information to get rid of their resentment.

It will not change this basic truth.

Again, you're ignoring the fact that the children would have other male and female role models (grandparents, aunts, uncles, ect.).

You argue that any group that thinks gay parents can be good parents is part of some plot to destroy the American family. The Child Welfare League of America, North American Council on Adoptable Children, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers all think gays can be as good as straights at raising children.

My sources are far more reliable than yours.

    • While I'm glad to hear Obama take this stand, I fear he may have scared away a good chunk of his voters.
If he does get elected, I pray he holds true to his promise. I'm sick of politicians lying.

    • The reason I find this intresting is because it actually teaches me what kind of a man and Presidental Candidate Obama will be. I find that we Americans don't know much about Obama. I believe we are slowly finding things out about him that I must say troubles me greatly.
I also believe that when God created humans He made a man and a woman on this earth to marry and have children. God's word says be fruitful and multiply. How
can two men or two women marry, be fruitful and multiply? If God wanted men to marry men or women to marry women he would have created tthings in that manner. Obama wants gay couples to adopt, but God's word also says in Psalms 127:3, "Behold children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is His reward. How can two men or two women marry and multiply? Sure they can adopt, but if it weren't for a man and a woman that had children there would be no children for them to adopt. This earth would be a lonely place if were only all men or only all women. Think about it, when the same sex marries it is an abomination against God. Read your Bible it will not lie to you for God's Word is TRUTH!
Ask yourself this question.do you want a President who has no regard for God's Word? I believe we have seen and heard some things about what type of people he was associating with ( terrorist ) and what type of Church he was attending ( racist ) he won't recite the Pledge of Allegiance or wear an American lapel pin on his jacket, they've showed him wearing Muslim clothing. So people beware of sheep in wolves clothing ( that also comes out of the Bible ).

Why do you have to always insult people to make your point. It is so counterproductive.

Christians in general do not know what the Koran teaches and do not understand the good points about Islam.

Everyone should know about other faiths, be multicultural, international and multilingual in this day and age.

The personal attacks on Obama about being Moslem are narrow minded and increased by the fear created by the Islamic terrorists.

What kind of moron doe not even knows this. And he want to be president of America This country is back in the dark age.

To have a child gay have to find a throw away mother that will sell her child or a throw away father that will sell away his sperm.

When it come to adoption they are working on the courts to set up the way to steal children.

Any one who want to raise a child without a father or a mother is not fit to be a parent. This person is a selfih sob

Now you're just being ignorent. Single-parents and gay parents make up a large percentage of those adopting orphans. If you took that away, thousands more children would be in group homes and the foster care system.

500,000: Number of children living in foster care in the United States.

14,100: Number of foster children living with lesbian or gay parents nationwide (3 percent of American foster children).

35: Percentage of lesbians who currently have children (16 percent of gay men have children).

Vitamin, you are using the issue of adoption to justify gay parenting. It is misleading. These are two different issues. I know where you are going.

I am aware of the 500,000 children in foster home.
I hope one day our country will wake up to this need.

We are falling in that regard as a country.

The state of Massachusset and the gay lobby has shut down the oldest adoption agency in that state because they did not want to go against their deepest belief about homosexuality. Despite the fact that there are other agencies to choose from, their religious freedom was taken away like in a totalitarian state

Meanwhile that religious denomination still takes care of over 25% of aids patients in this country with love and compassion.

    • soleil10:

Research to date has reached an unequivocal conclusion about gay parenting: the children of lesbian and gay parents grow up as successfully as the children of heterosexual parents. In fact, not a single study has found the children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged because of their parents’ sexual orientation. Other key findings include:

There is no evidence to suggest that lesbians and gay men are unfit to be parents. Home environments with lesbian and gay parents are as likely to successfully support a child’s development as those with heterosexual parents.

Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation. Rather, it is influenced most profoundly by a parent’s ability to create a loving and nurturing home -- an ability that does not depend on whether a parent is gay or straight.

There is no evidence to suggest that the children of lesbian and gay parents are less intelligent, suffer from more problems, are less popular, or have lower self-esteem than children of heterosexual parents.

The children of lesbian and gay parents grow up as happy, healthy and well-adjusted as the children of heterosexual parents.
      Source: American Civil Liberties Union

As for the adoption agency, state funded programs simply must be secular. That agency was in the wrong so it got shut down.

Children raised by gay parents are 7 times more likely to be gays or bisexual.

Shutting an adoption agency because they do not want to sing the gay religion mantra is absolutly evil and unacceptable.

Our ancestors came to America in order to be free of religious tyranny.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry also says that gay parents are no more likely than straight parents to produce gay children. Do you believe them? Where do you get your information? Do you make it up on the spot? Or perhaps you get it from one of those anti-gay propaganda sites? I wonder if you think that The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is part of the "gay agenda" and some nefarious plot to destroy the country.

The adoption agency your currently complaining about was not shut down by the state. It closed its adoption services because refused to comply with state laws and was discriminating based on sexual orientation. They held religious dogma over the welfare of those children.

By the way MY ancestors were taken to America by force and were forced to convert. That's religious tyranny.

They were forced to shut down because they did not want to propagate the Gay religion forced upon them

You can play with words as long as you want that does not change the reality

Who do you think you are to want to restrict parents from choosing the adoption agency of their choice.

Gays can go to the gay agencies if they want.

That is just state dictatorship. That is sick and medieval.

The statistics I shared before on gay parenting are in one of my archived post on the subject. You can find it easily

Many associations with lofty title do not impress anyone anymore because many have lost credibility and hide their agenda behind faulty research.

That was working 20 years ago but today people may be silenced but they think for themselves.

From the teachers union to the ACLU, to the congress, the credibility factor is less than 10 %

First of all, homosexuality is not a religion, it is a sexual orientation. Don't get it twisted. That church choose to end its adoption services because their prejudice was stronger than their compation for those children.

"Who do you think you are to want to restrict parents to choose the adoption agency of their choice." What the fuck does that even mean?

"That is just state dictature. Its all about you rights That is sick and medieval. Youn are going backward 500 years" Rights are sick, medieval, and backward? The simple fact of the matter is that all adoption agencies are state sanctioned and can't discriminate point blank. That church just couldn't comply and now the children suffer for it.

Also, you never where you get your information from. I'm not gonna hunt through your postings looking for it.

Homosexuality is a belief system, it is a different worldview of the universe, a different view of life, its purpose and of his creator or non creator if you do not believe in a creator

Communism was also a belief system, a religion in its own right. I do not want to go in details here.

The concept of family, parenting, the duality of male and female etc...etc all of it is redefined in the homosexual religion. This is why there is so much anti religious accusation because homosexuality is in direct conflict with all the main religions of the world.

Homosexuals have only two possibilities 1) change themselves or 2) change the whole universe, all the beliefs systems and more.

The parent child relationship and the man and woman relationdship. All together is the axis of the universe.

The grandchild is an extension of his father and grand father as well as of his mother and grandmother.

Gay parenting destroys lineage, including the relationship between ancestors and descendants.

It is a religion without a name

You can not legislate attitudes about things this basic, any more than you can legislate homosexuality or any other sexual fetish. We like what we like. We have got to realize that our future, happiness and life are not in hands of some political party or candidate. Wake up. No ego maniac willing to subject himself, his family and this nation to the tortures of a presidential campaign gives one flying _u_k about some working family. Our value expires the second you walk out of the polling booth.

The government doesn't sanctify(approve of) marriage the people do. that position of favor was bestowed because society deemed the family unit as Good for society.Marriage is not a right it is a special status.

Obama, unlike McCain, seems to understand that he doesn't live in a world were everyone is supposed to think just like him. Whether you like it or not, there are gays that have children and they need to be able to raise their children in peace and with the same rights as other parents. If you're not gay, it's not hurting you for gays to have equal rights.

However, there are many policticians who are too scared of criticism to even SAY they support LGBT rights.

    • Woo. Makes me love him even more.
The fact that he's so open to that, even though he isn't gay and has many ripping apart his every opinion, is incredible. That's the kind of leader I want. Hopefully he delivers.

Now let's just make sure that fat white guy doesn't get in.

To be honest, montesooma, you are exactly what I hate about living in the US. Besides, 'fat' was a loosely used term for derogatory purposes as well as referring to him being financially fat, living off taxes from those who work hard, whether doctors or Macdonald's burger flippers. I'm also white.

montesooma, you are racist, confrontational, and a perfect example of why the world hates our country. Congratulations.

    • It's good to see Obama making a stand on something that could potentially alienate some swing voters. He should have substance to back up his promise of hope.

sounds great until you realize ---they're fags
Marriage is society's stamp of approval on someones living situation.
I don't think the majority of people should be forced to put their approval on this when they don't agree with it.

This is flawed reasoning. Marriage between two people is a personal decision. The only approval that marriage has to do with is the two parties who choose to live together. Popular opinion should have no place in deciding who can and can't get married. If you don't like gay marriage, simply don't get one. Any action beyond this is just bigotry against someone you don't care to understand. This is the opposite of what our Constitution stands for.

Montesooma, you obviously have hatred towards people that are different than you. Im always baffled by it, its their marriage, why does it concern you? You think gay couples are gonna skrew up because they are gay? Look around smarty, american families have been falling apart for half a century with straight couples. It has nothing to do with straight or gay, its the actual person.

We are all humans, but we are all different...maybe you dont realize that yet.

    • McCain's response that gay families should not adopt really shows how out of touch he is with American culture. He sounds like a grumpy old man. This can only help Obama.
