A video purportedly from an armed group based in western China has released a video threatening an attack on the Olympic games in Beijing, according to a US internet-monitoring group.

The video, reported by the IntelCenter watchdog group on Thursday, shows an explosion over a venue and a burning Olympics logo.

It follows the posting of a similar video in July, in which a group calling itself the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) claimed responsibility for a series of bus bombings.

However, Chinese officials dismissed those claims.

IntelCenter said the latest video was dated August 1 and features "graphics showing a burning Olympics logo and an explosion imposed over one of the venues".

The monitoring group said of the earlier video that TIP had threaten attacks on the Beijing games.

Comments on the online video were in the language of the Uighurs, a predominantly Muslim people in western China.

At least 16 police officers were killed in an attack in Kashgar in the western Xinjiang province earlier this week.
