I recently heard that manta rays are harvested for their tails while the live animal is left ununsed. Also heard someone found the manta ray near fisherman's worf and brought it to downtown after it was already dead.

Maybe it was staging a die-in to protest global-warming, and the growing dead-zones in the ocean.

I hope this hits the local tv news to follow up on this. Could there be restaurants in the area that may serve manta ray as a meal? Or perhaps it was intended as an exotic pet. It obviously did not make it to where ever it was supposed to go. I doubt this was part of a protest. Very disturbing to have seen it. Im glad I wasn't there.

"A huge manta ray"? It's tiny! These things grow up to about seven meters across. I have no idea how someone got hold of one though, manta rays are tropical fish.

Depressing.
Hopefully the police acted more quickly than what it seems.
It wasn't a crime scene and it was obviously dying, so either try to take it to some water or just get it off the sidewalk.
Hoepfully yhe four cops didn't stare in befuddlement for too longbefore taking action.

They did try to pour water on it. Unfortunately people cannot touch manta rays without damaging their (the manta ray) membrane causing tears and infections. Sadly there really wasnt anything anyone could do. By the time animal control got there is had long passed.

People are so insanely cruel to animals. It makes me sick.
I want the culprit seriously hurt. I mean brutally tortured. American military style. I want them to feel like they are dying.
Bastards.

Well I highly doubt someone pulled a manta ray out of the ocean and threw it on the sidewalk. More than likely it got into the gutter system and somehow popped out there. Theres been other stories of aquatic life making it into cities via the gutter system.

Really, you doubt someone would do that?
Do a google news search for animal cruelty and see the twisted fucked up shit people do to animals for seemingly no reason.
This wouldn't even make headlines if it wasn't so weird.

I think the Monterey Bay Aquarium's new "It follows you home" marketing campaign has gone a little too far this time ;)
