Apparently, 136 days of the average woman's life are spent getting ready for a night out. Men, on the other hand, only need about 1,092 hours to look their best.

A survey of 1,000 women also showed that 67 per cent thought that the time spent getting ready was actually a chore. Only a third of women said they enjoyed beautifying themselves.

Interestingly, there is evidence of a north south divide. Two thirds of northern women spend an average of 146 minutes getting ready compared with southerners who take 117 minutes to pamper themselves.

Heather Boden from Skinbliss, who commissioned the research, said: "The figures come as no surprise considering the pressure that today's women are under just to make themselves look good. There's a host of waxing, exfoliating, moisturising, straightening, polishing and plucking involved in getting ready for a night out. When you're stretched for time or just simply want to get out, see your friends and have a good time, the routine of getting ready can often be an unwanted task."

    • Women aren't taught tricks to minimize the prep time - I am amazed how long it takes some of my friends to get ready.. I can do what they do and more in less time because its a system!

    • I know it's just society's expectations that women look put-together and enhanced to such a degree, however this trend is rapidly spreading to the male population, too! The number of ads for men's "beauty" products is increasing almost exponentially, and they've had HUGE success. I think in due time we ladies will be neck-in-neck with the men in this statistic.

    • haha to Armageddon_Now & MsWatkins

but I'd like to make a correction and put the two together:

If women take 3, 276 hours to get ready and men take 1,092 hours to get ready, then men would be waiting (annoyed) for 2,184 hours...scratching their balls.

well the thing is a woman getting ready is a dedicated task, nothing else may happen while they're doing that. but for us guys, ball scratching is the minimal multi-task, you can scratch your balls and do anything, watch football, stare at clouds, play the kazoo, help your girlfriend get ready....

    • A whole 146 minutes getting ready?? I would've been there and back in that time (and I'm a girl). When will people learn that a ton of makeup is *not* attractive...?

    • Sexism is a true misbelief.
People can choose if they want to 'look good' or just go out like the nature has created them.

I see plenty of those on the streets each day & I'm more than happy to date a natural looking woman. I know a lot of men who think the same, and it's usually the good looking men who don't really care.

      Just my 2c.

    • I love getting dressed up! If I didnt like it, I wouldnt do it. Although I dont know if I spend all that long getting ready....in the mornings if Im not doing anything special it usually takes me like 10 minutes to get dressed and done up. If Im going out at night it will be closer to 30 maybe. If I had more time Id probably spend longer getting ready haha.

Also most guys I know take just as long as girls to get ready...especially when you factor in them shaving.

    • I've always had a soft spot for low maintenance chicks. At the same time, I love how a woman looks when she's all dolled up.

    • i use the "less is more" line on my girlfriend all the time. it is usually the girls that don't need make up that put it on with a paint roller.

    • This is totally person and situation specific. Some days I can get up showered dressed and pleased with my appearance in under 20 minutes. Other days it takes me 20 minutes just to pick out which top to put on... only to swap one more time as I'm walking out the door. And I also know loads of guys who take longer than I do to get ready.

    • I don't know, I like getting ready for nights out. It's too much hassle to do on a daily basis, but for special occasions, putting on makeup is just like creating a piece of art. I especially have fun with eyeshadow.

For my daily ritual though, I can't be bothered for much more than a shower, blow dry, and maybe some mascara.

    • 1092 hours = 45.5 days.

Just thought that needed to be said but still sad women spend 3 times as much time getting ready. The beauty myth is sexism, plain and simple. Not saying women should not care but sometimes it's just ridiculous. The fact that you look like a different person in the morning is the reason why I ran away.

    • I don't mind getting all doll up is the cost of doing so that gets to me. It's not all about vanity, it's about looking your best, and if you know the beauty tricks why not do it.

    • I believe it...and it's exhausting. And that's why lipgloss and sunglasses were created....for days that you don't want to spend one more second in front of a mirror!

    • Makeup's fun. I miss David Bowie's Glam days. The guy backlash is funny though, their suspicion that it's an underestimate. And Neghie is completely right. Men are judgmental queens...in fact a reality TV show where a panel of men judge women's efforts would simply be too brutal for primetime.

    • Bah, Neghie- my finacee doesn't care about that. Whenever I do put make-up on he says "You don't need any of that, you are beautiful the way you are" (awwww, I know, so cure you could puke.)
I could probably be"better" looking if I put a few hours in each day- but I'd rather spend that time actually enjoying myself. Things like blow drying my hair, putting make-up on, blah blah blah are RARE events for me. A shower, deodorant and some lip gloss and I'm good to go. I spend like, 15 minutes a day getting "ready" at most.

I'm the same as you guys. I take only about 15 min to get ready in the morning, too. I don't wear make-up and nothing needs to be done to my hair.

I think the majority of my maintenance routine involves hair removal. It's SUCH a pain!

I've been with the same guy for 9 years. If I do anything, it's for special occasions, and when I want to feel different down there. I was referring to guys who are ragging on girls that do so. When they see that leggy blonde struttin' down the strip, it's ridiculous to think she rolled out of bed that way.

I never thought that they rolled out of bed that way since as a photograher I've seen what goes into making it.

I wouldn't put all that effort into it myself and I don't expect women to if they didn't want to.

I do like the way it looks but I don't think it's worth the effort all the time.

    • Oh get off it! I'd like to see all you guys date a woman who didn't that time out to pluck, shave, wax, curl, and cover for your benefit. If Chewbacca doesn't turn you on, don't complain.
