Did the Chinese cheat? International Olympic Committee launches probe into He Kexin's age

Was she 14 or 16? Who knows but we may find out...

excerpt...

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into mounting allegations that Chinese authorities covered up the true age of their gold-medal winning gymnastics star because she was too young to compete.

An IOC official told The Times that because of "discrepancies" that have come to light about the age of He Kexin, the host nation’s darling who won gold in both team and individual events, an official inquiry has been launched that could result in the gymnast being stripped of her medals.

    • most of comment here seem that china has already cheated. At this point this news is pure conspiracy theory and cannot be taken seriously - there is not even any news about it on the IOC website. Could this just be jealousy?

    • Bout f*%ing time! I'm sick of seeing runners getting disqualified for stepping on or over a line yet there has been this HUGE allegation about this gymnast. Just think if she is actually 16, there would have been a plethora of documentation and proof given immediately. How are you gonna cheat when hosting something as big as this on your own turf?

    • I think that this is interesting because of the sheer hard work and dedication that goes into competing at this level. The gymnasts have only a few shots to compete at an Olympics level in this sport and the playing field should be fair. A rule is a rule. And cheating is cheating whether it be with drugs or an unfair advantage because of a younger pre-pubescent body. It's called Women's gymnastics not little girl gymnastics. Each sport has different rules that should be adhered to. The entire premise of the Olympics is thrown out of the window if you allow a cheater to keep their gold medal. Our own government went after Marion Jones vigorously for doping and lying. The problem here is that the government, parents, coaches and China's olympic committee is encouraging dishonest and a "win by any means necessary" attitude.

    • Aahh the beautiful spirit of sports!
It was told that American started this controversy… it’s also Americans who are fulminating because of the impressive results of the Chinese team in these Olympic games, Americans even invented a new performance ranking (counting all medals instead of gold medals) to put ourselves in front of the Chinese. What a shame, our greatness of spirit is obvious here. This being said, the efficient Chinese communists use children in their workforce to ensure the commercial surplus, and we don’t seam to have a problem with that, so why not to bring back gold from the Olympics??

    • No one has said they are bad gymnasts (in fact they are excellent) , they are just underage and that goes against the rules that apply to all. There are many rules that cover underage actions, and this is one of them, and they broke it. Now they (the government, not the girls) should pay the price for their actions.

    • Really, people just need to calm down about the whole thing.
Everytime I read about the topic, all the replies I see are bad toward those hard working girls.

How do you think they feel in a situation like this?
This world runs on life ruining gossip!

    • Furaipan:

Its not gossip, I have been reading the stories and then went on a couple of the registries that they were referring to. The Chinese themselves said these girls were 13 and 14 on several occasions and now are saying that they are older so that they can compete in the Olympics. The allegations have got to be credible for the IOC to start an investigation. You cannot just say they are too young and the IOC launches an investigation. There must be proof.

I feel sorry for the girls that gave everything they had but they knew in their hearts that they were cheating. With pressure from their government, their homeland, their parents and such I can understand but the medals need to be stripped for any kind of cheating not just cheating that a couple people think are acceptable.

    • who cares how old she is?! if you are 16, and get your ass kicked by someone younger, then guess what? YOU NEED TO TRAIN HARDER!!! fall with grace and lose with dignity! stop being a sore loser and just deal with it. i know its hard to deal with the fact that someone younger beat you at something you thought you were good at, but so what?! move on!!

    • CedricaBaez:

I dont believe that people are being sore losers. I used to compete in track and field and in basketball and respected the other competitors. what I had a problem with is some of the coaches and their methods and even some of the officials. If i did something wrong and the official called it I put my hand up to acknowledge that if was my foul. it's called responsibility and doing the right thing whether someone is watching or not.

From China's own official registries these girls are being touted as 14-year old phenoms; they knew those girls were underage when they placed them on their Olympic team and then went about changing history so to speak by rewriting articles with the 16-year old bit instead of 14-year old. It's blatant cheating.

Your 20-year old daughter could be out there busting her behind and get 4th place finish (her last Olympics) and get cheated out of a medal that could have been hers by someone that's not supposed to be competing.

The Chinese already have home court advantage and the judges are pressured by that. I saw one girl fall and medal. The other young lady took a step and tied Nastia Liukin who had a perfect routine. Bad judging or pressure because the Olympics is being played out in China; who really knows. But not being eligible to compete is something entirely different. It does not matter how good you are if you are not supposed to be there.

    • i would feel sorry for her for working so hard at 14 and winning gold and getting them taken away. but im sure she was aware, if she is in fact underaged, she was breaking rules, thus she doesn't deserve the gold medal.

You are right. It is unfair that she would have her medal removed from her. She did work hard, that cannot be denied.

It sucks if it is true because many people lose out. The Chinese Gymnast for their hard work and the Americans for having their Olympic moment stolen...as with those that came in fourth place or even fifth that would have gotten either silver or bronze.

    • If China had not altered ages before and other countries have not fudged ages before...this wouldn't be so easy to point out.

But they have and so have other countries that happen to come from the same area.

It seems Japan is the only country that seems to be as "honest" as one country can be in a area of dishonest countries.

Terms used very loosely, of course.

      What?

Are you talking about Basketball? Because all countries get someone from the NBA for the most part....because they have to go back to country of origin.

And what are you talking about professional? China breeds gymnast...baby is born straight to the boot camp to be a gymnast or whatever they so want them to be.

    • What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Asians do look a lot younger than Westerners in most cases.

If there is a comment about China, people on this site and mostly in the US always assume the worst. They are ignorantly wrong most of the time. The amazing thing is they speak as if they are stating obvious facts when in reality they are just speculated based on some shady journalism.

I am not Chinese. I am an American who lived abroad most of my life. There is always propaganda coming from both sides. Of course, both sides think that they know the truth and the other side is propaganda.

I think all the "innocent until proven guilty" was lost with the rampant use of performance enhancing drugs.

It has tainted things. Quite frankly why wouldn't they cheat? So many other people seem to be doing it!

    • First of all there's no real competition when no other nations are competing against the ASIANS AND EUROPEANS in gymnastics, This is Bull, where are the Ethnic nations, where's Africa? Where's Brazil? Where are the Arabic nations? where are the Hispanic Nations? if these nations were competing, neither the Chinese or the Europeans would have a chance, this is garbage, they can't be claimed World Olympians when only European nations and Asia are competing amongst each other, it's kind of Arbitrary. But anyway, I'm not surprised, I'm disgusted by China, as far as there regiment is concerned and their obsessive perfection complex, it's disgusting, these Asian kids have been tortured in the name of Athleticism. ARgh

The thoughts are that they are more flexible. Plus, all one has to do is look at the divers from China too. The one girl is 75lbs. and goes into the water like a hot knife through butter. I realize many Asian women are petite but being underage - undersized based on that age is cheating because they are gaining an advantage over the other athletes by being younger. Not conjecture, this is a fact because they are dominating in certain areas where this makes a real difference.

    • Beta_Boy:

You're not being stupid. Younger pre-pubescent kids have less body weight than older competitors, they are much more flexible and have found to be less apprehensive. This gives them a decided advantage over older, heavier gymnasts. The Olympics is a a WOMEN's competition. The rules for the World championships are quite different and some of the older competitors like Shawn Johnson came into the Olympics with the title of World Champion.

It's a shame but the Olympics is every four years, we won't see some of these girls at the next Olympics and it is a shame that they will get cheated out of something that is a lifetime ambition because of another country's deception.

I say Kudos to the Chinese gymnasts and their skills. I have nothing bad to say about the Chinese people or their young gymnasts. If they are lying about their age just think of the parents, teachers, coaches and government officials teaching them to deceive. They are the ones that are doing a disservice to the Olympic spirit and these young gymnasts. They should be more responsible.

    • If she is underage, I guess she may be stripped of her medal or face other possible consequence. But I don't think it is entirely her fault. It's the Chinese government's fault for pushing and rushing the gymnast into the competition. But, I still applaud her for a job well done. She still managed to beat the other participants.

But if she is 16 (which I still kind of not believe), then great job.

    • Not that I'm a vulture circling or anything, but the lovely Brit Beth Tweddle placed fourth in the final where He Kexin struck gold.

If China were to be found to have broken the rules ... Beth will be bumped up 1, or even 2, places!

      Shame on China.
