Fish found in boy's penis

Doctors were surprised to find a 2 cm long fish in the penis of a 14-year-old boy from India. Apparently, the fish had slipped up the penis and into the boy's bladder.

The patient was admitted to hospital with complaints of pain, dribbling urine and acute urinary retention spanning a 24-hour period. According to the boy, the fish slipped into his penis while he was cleaning his aquarium at home.

Professor Vezhaventhan and Professor Jeyaraman, who treated the boy and later wrote a paper on the case, explain: "While he was cleaning the fish tank in his house, he was holding a fish in his hand and went to the toilet for passing urine. When he was passing urine, the fish slipped from his hand and entered his urethra and then he developed all these symptoms."

After detecting the fish in the boy's bladder, Vezhaventhan and Jeyaraman used a technique known as cystourethroscopy to insert a special set of forceps down the patient's penis. Unfortunately, the fish was just too slippery to grip, so they resorted to using a rigid ureteroscope with a tool attached that is normally used for removing bladder stones.

The fish the urologists removed, which Practical Fishkeeping believes to be a small member of the Betta genus, measured 2cm long and 1.5cm wide.

Vezhaventhan and Jeyaraman report that a range of self-inflicted foreign bodies have been previously removed from the male genitalia and lower urinary tract.

After the removal of the fish the boy's symptoms disappeared, but he was subsequently sent for psychiatric counseling.

    • This fish and its behaviour, has been well documented on a TV jungle exploration program, transmitted in the UK, recently. A warning to those who have never been, that ignorance is not bliss in this case. It`s very painful, if left untreated, is life threatening.

      I thought it'd be a Candiru when I read the title.

      The Candiru is a parasitic catfish that lives in the Amazon. It can follow urine streams back to the origin and enter the urethra. (Please don't pee in the Amazon...)

    • so what... the fish was able to survive... well in his hand for a start, while he was peeing? THEN! manages to swim its way up the urethra and into his bladder where it just survived in the asicidty of his urine?

      i hav trouble keeping my fish alive in plain tap water for crying out loud!

      lol. poor guy...but really, that must've been a very fast fish for the guy not to notice it swimming up there. seriously, I'm guessing a guy would feel that...and he probably would've had time to try and not let it get all the way into his bladder. oh well. it just makes me wonder if this will spawn any public service announcements in India or the pet world warning pet owners to keep their pets where they belong

    • Well he was obviously trying something new. 14 is a megical time of sexual awakening for a man. And often leads to severe burns of the penis, or you pissing blood for 3 days.

      WHY WOULD YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM HOLDING A FISH.
      Why would you hold a fish out of water?
      If he was consciously aware of this, why didn't the boy go to the ER asap?

    • This whole story is odd and creepy. But lets give the kid the benefit of the doubt. So he goes in the bathroom with fish in hand (huh?). And then while he peeing the fish swims upstream and squeezes up through his penis all the way into his bladder (huh?) But then when he leaves the bathroom, he doesnt question where the fish went? "Duh, Gee, it was in my hand a minute ago????"
      There are more details to this story than the article is telling.

    • Small fish+hand+penis does not equal "accident while peeing", it equals accident while pleasuring.

      Still, poor kid - as if the discomfort caused by the fish wasn't enough the treatment sounds horrific!
