Police and food safety experts are warning the public to watch out for bottles of fake vodka which have been found to contain potentially harmful levels of methanol.

The counterfeit vodka has a hint of acetone smell, similar to nail varnish, the Food Standards Agency said.

    • Ugh, that sounds... rather disgusting, though I've known some hardened vodka drinkers to drink medicinal alcohol and even sample perfume and nail polish when vodka can't be gotten hold of (or just for the kick).. I doubt this'd bother them too much.

    • Vodka does not have a smell!

Look this isn't "cheap" vodka, its knock off vodka, big difference.

This is bootlegged stuff. and it is very bad for you.
I came across some last year in "Smirnoff" bottles, vile it was, the bottles were perfect bar a slightly pinkish hue on the red lable.

It contained methanol. your eyes wont appriciate this.

Btw if you wanna get drunk for cheap stick to listerine...24%....

    • i'll take it over patron silver ( or any tequila ) . actually , i'd rather strain sterno ( "canned heat " ) through a dirty pair of underwear into a used bed pan than drink tequila .

    • I've had real Russian Vodka before.
      Gosudarev Zakaz, was the brand
      It ain't all that special
Don't let the "Zakaz" in it's name fool you.
It still tasted like paint thinner.

    • Vodka, like tequila and whiskey, should never ever be cheap.

I learned long ago that even if a bar has like $3 well drinks I will pay extra for at least Stoli (its as low grade vodka as I go) just do I dont have to drink Popov.

Figure 3: Structure of a vacuum tube diode

In electronics, a diode is a two-terminal device ( thermionic diodes may also have one or two ancillary terminals for a heater).

Diodes have two active electrodes between which the signal of interest may flow, and most are used for their unidirectional electric current property. The varicap diode is used as an electrically adjustable capacitor.

The directionality of current flow most diodes exhibit is sometimes generically called the rectifying property. The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the forward biased condition) and to block it in the opposite direction (the reverse biased condition). Thus, the diode can be thought of as an electronic version of a check valve.

Real diodes do not display such a perfect on-off directionality but have a more complex non-linear electrical characteristic, which depends on the particular type of diode technology. Diodes also have many other functions in which they are not designed to operate in this on-off manner.

    • Um, which vodkas don't smell like nail varnish? Pretty much everything we served at the bar I worked at had the same sweet smell, even the expensive stuff. Ick.

    • I'll obviously be sticking solely to Whiskey this weekend then...

A lot of UK cornershops and local stores are now stocking a 'vodka' drink. It looks just like any other normal vodka, apart from it's missing about 10% off the alcohol content and tastes remarkably like paint-stripper. Somehow this warning doesn't come as a surprise.

I'm with Mooshuspice, it's not about buying cheap vodka!

    • Fake vodka?

      It's either vodka or not!
In this case, it's not vodka!

I also think, the fact that these "counterfiet" products are thriving is because the prices of the "real" thing is extremely and unnecessarily high, but hey, what do I know, I only buy the stuff!

    • That does not sound very healthy... I wonder how something like that can happen in a factory. Are they not supposed to do constant quality and health checks? Apparently not ...

    • JanaPokana:

I don't think this was made in a monitored factory with any regulations. As a counterfeit, it was probably made cheap in an old, musty basement by someone just wanting to make a quick buck.

    • Poisoning can lead to nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness, blurred vision leading to blindness, and breathing difficulties.

Symptoms of the poisoning can take several hours to develop.

Sounds like a drinking binge too me
