a dog may just be more submissive and tamed/obedient, not necessarily smarter.

A Wolf is an absolutely fascinating animal. Even raised in captivity they will display anomalies that surely must be genetic and uniquely separate them from dogs. A dog, if fed constantly will eat until it throws up, and then start eating again. A Wolf on the other hand will eat only the amount of food that is required to maintain its optimal body weight. If a Wolf is inactive it will only eat enough to maintain its strength, (approximately 1 meal per week). Without activity a dog will eat itself into obesity and death.
In an artificial environment of created chaos a dog will run, jump and get physically involved having no idea why. If the chaos last long enough the dog will become violent, barking and biting out of confusion. A Wolf will remain detached and watch. If it feels that no threat is present, or eminent, it will remain detached from the action.
A Wolf is definitely smarter than a dog in many ways, and smarter than many humans.

Dogs are no smarter than wolves, and wolves are no smarter than dogs. They are practically the same species, just different breeds. And there are smart wolves and dumb wolves, just like there are smart dogs and dumb dogs.

If dogs were smarter than wolves,... they would stay away from us,... like wolves do.
That's like saying humans are the smartest animal,... I DON'T THINK SO!!
Dogs brains may work on more levels, but, wolves tend to steer clear of human overlords that would do nothing but enslave or kill them. - 3 years ago

I never thought wolves were smarter than dogs in the first place. I guess this confirms my "who knows where I got it from" assumption.

I never thought that dogs were stupid: they just seem less wild than wolves because they've evolved alongside us for so many generations.
