Heteroflexible: Girls kissing girls is the latest trend

Imagine that you hear that your 18-year-old daughter was kissing another girl at a party last weekend. What races through your mind? "O my gosh, she's exploring same-sex attractions. She must be a lesbian."

"Girls making out with each other to turn on guys is the latest craze at high school and college parties," according to the online magazine Salon.com.

Still don't believe it? Listen to this summer's monster hit song, "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry.

Young women whom Salon.com interviewed about the girl-on-girl trend said they had initially kissed other females to get a free beer at parties or on a dare from guys. But they soon saw it as a way to signal to males that they are "sexually open and adventurous."

"It was like, look, I'm the center of attention!" recalled one 16-year-old.

Female bisexuality is "the erotic new trend (everyone's trying it)," announced Marie Claire magazine in 2006.

A 2005 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appeared to confirm this. It found that while 1.3 percent of women identified themselves as homosexual, 11.5 percent of women ages 18 to 44 -- and about 14 percent of women in their late teens and early 20s -- report at least one sexual encounter with another woman.

Only about 4 percent of women, ages 18 to 59, reported such an encounter in a similar survey in 1992.

What is fueling this trend?

One factor is the huge popularity of Girls Gone Wild, a DVD franchise that films alcohol-addled females' sexual encounters with other women at college drinking revels. Same-sex kissing has been glamorized by celebrities, including Madonna and Britney Spears.

"Girls aren't kissing other girls because they want to," Pamela Paul, the author of "Pornified," told Salon. "They're doing it because they want to appeal to boys their age. And for boys their age who've developed sexually alongside Internet porn, their sexual cues are affected by the norms and standards of porn. And that's girl-on-girl action."

The result? Rampant cultural confusion.

    • heartily agree that this is becoming a trend. most likely because some young women:

      a. need attention (right on, owwmykneecap)
      b. get bored easily and kissing another woman makes them feel 'adventurous'
      c. need to look open minded and cool

I do believe in exploring one's sexuality but it seems as though the rise in girl-on-girl action doesn't stem from a deep need to explore. It looks like it comes from a place of senseless, 'open-minded' behavior induced by alcohol. Kind of like 'be cool and do anything to attract attention'.

    • This isn't such a new thing, though there's something slightly... not sure about the right word here.. sexist? mysoginist? odd? (but they all come across too strong) about girls only doing it to turn guys on or for attention. Mind you, it's probably a good thing that girls are confident enough about their sexuality to do it, whether they are straight, gay or bi, where most straight guys would stay well clear.

Girls kiss better that lots of guys anyway :)

    • AAAHHHH!!! Ok... I'm a 100% straight male who loves to catch some girl on girl when surfing the evil world of porn... but... what are you girls thinking? Men are always horny bastards... you don't need to go making out with your female friend to get them going... It disgusts me to see what the media and girls themselves are doing to the image of the woman... Stop being sluts... the only guys who go for the sluts are the dicks... stop whoring yourselves around so one day I can have a daughter and not be worried she is off at some party making out with some other girl just to get some guy to show her affection... and that's another thing why do girls think a guys shoving his meat stick into them is them showing affection... teen girls need to get things set straight for them or something...

      the rant is over...

    • The article attributes this trend to the wrong thing. What really drives this in my opinion, are the womens magazines that put the female body on such a high pedestal! Now a days, a "sexy" man is supposed to be hairless and has pec's that look like tits...

    • Let's remember that high school was a popularity contest, and these young girls are trying to climb the social ladder.

As far as girls in the older age bracket, they may just be going through a period of exploration, and I see nothing wrong with that. A girl kissing a girl DOES NOT make her a slut.

I've kissed one of my girlfriends, nothing tacky or "look at me" about it. I wanted to kiss her, so I did. I am very secure with myself and I was not, by any means, trying to impress anyone.

The stats continue to go up because the social norm and what we find acceptable changes from decade to decade.

    • Let's see how do i say this. Back in the day a , lets just say that the universe is always in the state of sex, and that sex has to be taken seriuosly if we are to truely understand one another? let's see lets start with etymology of AP (khep, hap, tep, sab) & the female principle, Love, Feel, Desire, Bond, Sex, when you love a women or man or anything you desire to connect/bond with it but Love is light from the heart okay. Desire, aphrodisiac arousing or intensifiying sexual desire to wish for love is to bond on a higher level. Sex the heart an soul, the apple of the eye the core of man ,and a women transversely cut reveals the 5-pointed star; love, feel, desire, bond, sex, the underworld womb, in which we are made for each other that is why female and male genitals fit together in sex, or be it erotic love lovers are drawn together full of eager, desire, passionate longing, invariably causing people to ???? with warmth of lust, love sexual fire. So what a brother is trying to say is a real man is not turned on by female's that act that way to get a real down to earth man that respects his queen no matter what race peace my kamite.

    • So, does this tells us something about how much more "attention whores" the ME generation is? Surely, it doesn't take a couple of girls kissing to get attention.
It doesn't say "sexually open and adventurous" to me. It says, I'm willing to do anything to get attention; such as throw big tantrums over insignificant things. I try and avoid these "girls" whenever possible.

    • I love that whenever I see photos of attention-seeking girls kissing, they always have their eyes closed and look like they're eating something for Fear Factor.

    • There's nothing more tacky and corny than walking into a party and spotting two girls who in reality can't dance; decide to uncontrollably jerk and wriggle like two zombie cats in a bag. And try to pass it off as "sexy".

      Such a jagged sight indeed.

    • Making out with a girl just to get some guy's attention has nothing to do with bisexual or lesbian women. It is really unfortunate and detrimental that some people - including girls who claim they are bisexual when they are really not - confuse the two ...

    • Pandering to the horny male is a disastrous road for a female to take...once you turn them on there's no turning them off. Don't reve it up if you can't finish it off and once you start a guy horny...it never ends.

    • This isn't a new trend. Old people just always love to get worked up when they find out about stuff kids have been doing they didn't know about. Like just because they hadn't heard about it before means it wasn't going on.

    • When you're a (hetero) teenage boy, just about anything to do with girls is enough to get you hot under the collar.

Now I'm a bit older I find it a little sad that they are doing it to titillate the boys around them.

    • I think the trend actually works. Buuut at the same time, you get to tell yourself "damm, it's a Lesbian, I was about to hit on her". They might also be losing chances.

    • I'm so sick of this stupid trend. It makes it harder for those of us that legitimate homosexuals/bisexuals to be taken seriously.

    • I don't think this is all that much of a new thing, it's been happening at parties for years, maybe the ladies just feel a bit more comfortable talking about it nowadays?

    • Yea, because of women like those, many are confused about what is a lesbian and bisexual are. Some are even called themselves bisexual when they really are not. I'm a bisexual but I'm not gonna randomly kiss other women at drunken parties. If it wasn't for my boyfriend I'm currently dating, I would be able to have a relationship with another women.
