If McCain hoped to stop Democrats from getting much mileage out of the oil issue in this presidential election, he picked the wrong vice presidential candidate.
His choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, comes from a state whose lifeblood is oil. Palin favors opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development, something McCain opposes. Her family even gets one of its paychecks from the oil industry: Palin's husband, Todd Palin, earned $46,790 last year as a facility operator for BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay.
Oil and natural gas and the jobs they create are part and parcel of life in Alaska: "If you are not for opening ANWR, in the state of Alaska, you couldn't get elected dogcatcher," says former Alaska state Rep. Ray Metcalfe, a Republican-turned-Democrat who supports Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and anticipates Palin's critics will probably zero in on the oil drilling issue.
But that live-off-the-land culture is largely foreign to voters in the lower 48, who are paying high gas prices without the benefit of the oil royalty dividend checks that Alaskans get each year. Eligible Alaskans received $1,654 each in 2007.
Palin is so pro-energy that she actually praised Obama earlier this month for calling on the United States to work with the Canadian government to build an Alaska natural gas pipeline.

A friend of a friend who knows Todd and Sarah Palin (their cabin is near the Palin's cabin) told me that Sarah Palin had amniocentesis when she was pregnant with her 5th child: the test came back positive for Down syndrome - but she went ahead anyway. I find this pretty disgusting!
First, why would anyone have more than 3 children? It's excessive and selfish, there are already too many people on this planet, if we all had 4 or more children, it would be a disaster.
Second, what kind of idiot gets pregnant at the age of 44 when they already have four children? It is common knowledge that the risk of Down syndrome goes up dramatically after the age of 40. Sarah should have known her eggs were getting old.
Third, why did she have amniocentesis anyway, if she was just going to ignore the results?
I suppose, as with everything else, Palin doesn't care, she just does whatever she damn well pleases, without any regard for anyone else. Everyone else has to pay for her arrogance.
I would really like some news organization to investigate this. The public needs to know what sort of monster this person truly is.

The man McCain is from a long lineage of warriors. His ancestry was resolute with war.
Hence the man was born into war. He runs his campaign as war is his touchstone to the people!Born, raised and winding his life through in and about war, he tells his story...
It does not seem to matter to him that the Vietnam War in which he served, was an imperialistic national blunder to "stop communism from taking over the world!"
The pro war hype of that era would have the nation believe we were in grave danger- "fear" was once again the guiding light! As a young boy. I witnessed this abomination of our nation going into war- “stop the communists, they are taking over the world!” That was the word of the day. "The domino effect will..."
McCain, to this day feels betrayed by the American peace movement as to why the Vietnam war was lost. This is familiar ground for the war culture that now has manifest itself in the Iraq War!
A war that McCain said we needed and voted for!Yet another war that will go down historically as a political assignation of our constitution and our cultural beliefs!
Another huge loss of national equity and our beloved youth all because of political ego and the lack of political wisdom!Wars are won or lost by the rightness of the participants! This is something viably important that McCain and conservatives don't grasp!
As our nations history goes- we have never lost a war when we were right but now we have lost wars because we were ideologically wrong! It's not just about military strength- its about wisdom and justice!
McCains campaign, and his video bio are sequenced within his life of war.
Service and gratitude of and for his country is based on his war experience.
His biography finally sequences into his career as an AZ. senator.
Twenty-six years of senatorial time are blurred into nothingness! His voting record parallels the GOP- a 10% difference from the GOP is supposed to define his presidency, and his given name the “Maverick?”
His record cannot be hidden, his ideology is full of contradiction- flip flops!President Bush said, “Im the War president, Im the War president!”
It most definitely seems there is another one named John McCain following in the wings!
I truly hope he is not the one!McCain says he's different then Bush, he's not the same!
Yet who was in the program directors chair off the convention stage as though he were directing the entire RNC proceeding?Karl Rove!
McCain is the same as Bush- divisive, self-righteous, a fist-swinger with no answers for change from the destitude that his own party has created! - 3 years ago

WHY DO THE LEFT-WING SEXISTS DISMISS A WOMAN JUST BECAUSE SHE IS BEAUTIFUL! AND, WHY CANT'T THE LEFT WINGERS STICK TO THE FACTS INSTEAD OF MAKING UP LIES!
1.) SARAH PALIN TOOK ON THE BIG OIL COMPANIES, FORCING THEM TO SHARE THEIR PROFITS WITH THE POPULATION OF ALASKA.
2.) SARAH PALIN'S HUSBAND IS NOT AN "OIL TYCOON". HE IS A UNION WORKER ON THE PIPELINE. EXECUTIVES AS NOT UNION MEMEBERS!
3.) SHE IS A VERY ACTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIST. GET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT! JUST BECAUSE, SHE IS INFORMED AND INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO REALIZE THAT DRILLING FOR OIL HAS HAD A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE WILDLIFE OF ALASKA, DOES NOT MAKE HER ANTI ANYTHING.
AGAIN, SARAH PALIN HAS ACCOMPLISHED MORE IN HER POLITICAL CAREER THAN ANY OTHER RECENT POLITICIAN. OBAMA HAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING! HE HAS DONE NOTHING BUT RUN FOR OFFICE!

I didn't make this connection right away with Palin and big oil, but recall the unrest in the region in recent years because of ANWR. Perhaps the timing couldn't be better for the GOP ticket to endorse Palin and McCain. Obama will have to weigh the pros and cons of off shore drilling, as well as ANWR in the upcoming weeks ahead. But if he should choose to talk about the issue, should focus on the negative aspects of ANWR, and tapping American oil reserves as alternatives.
The numbers simply don't support off shore drilling as a viable option, and I feel most Americans won't buy the proposition, much less any dabbling within ANWR. You can't take a relatively localized issue, and make it a national crusade. I'm sure big oil would love Palin in there under ideal circumstances, but this isn't quite the time if the candidates are going to be truthful with their voters.

The number one issue is who could step in to be President. That and the tie breaking vote in the Senate are the only two jobs of a Vice President according to the Constitution.
That should be the litmus test. The only test that really matters. Is the VP ready to step in and lead 300 million Americans when we are involved in two wars, face global challenges economically and have 8 years of unilateral aggression to dig our way out of?

Current Staffers:
Why are you continually bumping stories to the homepage and on to TV that smear the conservative candidates? Why is it that almost every story crawling up the homepage is anti-conservative? Hey, I've submitted some stories that are anti-liberal, why not bump those?
If you are going to call yourself a place for open discussion and if you are going to not specify that you have a liberal agenda, then why not bump at least...hmmm, let's see... ONE pro conservative story to your home page this year?
Tonight you finally pissed me off. Because for the first time in our nations history the republican party selected a woman as their VP. A progressive moment in history! And yet you choose to do nothing but slander her on your website and bump stories that smear her. Yeah, she may have policies that most on this site disagree with, but what gives? Why spend the whole day on your site smearing and discrediting her? It's fine if you will just admit you are a pro-obama website. But if you are going to claim political neutrality then show some balls and bump some stories that can provide some balance.
Is it Mario who replys to posts like this? Don't ignore this posting because I'll just keep asking for an answer.
I mean Current TV has a Journalism team right? You are trying to position yourselves as a source of independent journalism. How can you claim independence? I see zero effort to balance your content. It's your homepage for crying out loud! That may be the only thing anyone ever sees.
Obviously the majority of your viewers are liberal. Please nobody argue otherwise on that fact. But you have a responsibility if you claim political neutrality to balance your website and the content you are bumping. If not just state on your homepage what you are..."a place to smear conservatism."
And don't give me this algorithm bullshit either because you guys are internally bumping these stories all freaking day.

Dabne,
I've been reading quite a few of your posts and comments. You're a lone voice in a world of people with different political opinions. I don't know if Current will respond to you or not so I felt obligated to say a few words myself.
As you can see I've produced quite a few stories for Current. I've also worked with the CJ team quite a bit.
You bring up some valid arguments. I don't know quite what the website has evolved into either. In the beginning Current was completely different. It was all video based. Viewers could not post anything from all over the web. Basically, you could only submit video stories. The reason this is significant is because when shooting and editing a video story the submitter has to be very involved with the subject. It was an amazing site because the community had an opportunity to greenlight the video or not and if your video reached the top it aired on TV as a complete story. There was no voting anything down.
The community was also a lot more respectful because they all understood how hard it was to produce content. There was so much constructive feedback going on and I developed many legit friendships with other members. Issues were revealed through honest citizens, not through copy and paste postings from big media as it has become. The homepage was filled with fresh journalism, told by the citizens themselves. It was an escape from all the big media junk stories and was pure and honest. From day one the members were more liberal but it wasn't as obvious because again when producing an actual video story, one has more of a tendency to balance the story because that is what is expected to be seen as legitimate. And to be fair Al Gore made current happen, and a lot of people who worked at current and participated were Al Gore fans. Makes sense. If I started a network I would like it to stress some of my views I felt were important too.
Since those days Current has steadily evolved into what you see here. There were many who fought hard against these changes, and to be honest I was one of them. Most of the members who pioneered current.tv have since left. Even most the staff has completely turned over it seems.
But in regards to your complaints as to what stories are floating onto the front page I think it is a valid question. As a member of the Collective Journalism team I think the front page should show more balance. I think it would legitimize the network. This is something I've been stressing for years. I logged on to current.com tonight to see what perspective current had on the monumental vp selection of the republican party. I have to admit I was sorely disappointed to see the very stories you are referring to. It was one sided arguments from both sides, just a mess of rhetoric. But the site is now set up for that exact experience.
Personally, I stopped contributing on the website soon after they began to allow postings from all over the web. I tried my best to participate but soon found it not stimulating or rewarding. If I had my way I would revert back to the day of pure citizen journalism, opinions, and not posting web junk. Current's answer to me was that they could get people more involved by using this current format.
I feel that people should post their own written stories and opinions, with no links. We need to get back to the basics of citizen involvement. We need to stop using big media links to prove our points. In the beginning that was the very thing Current said they were not "claiming to be about pods and stories from the viewers themselves." But now it's a mess of big media links, and then a bunch of bickering and slandering comments both from the left and right.
It has become something far different as far as the website is concerned. Too much bickering, too much copy and pasting, too much partisanship.
I may start my own thread on this subject so forgive me if I copy and paste ; )

dabne:
Ha! Plisko's famous red light pod! Those were the days.
This is actually a great example of what Current was. Plisko hits the nail on the head when he says "the internet is full of mean jerks," anonymously hiding behind avatar's."
In the early days, most everyone used their real name in their profile and used a personal photo in their avatar. That was part of the deal. People knew who you were, where you were from. It kept things honest. People thought twice about talking trash, because people knew who they were. See how just that alone cleans up a lot of the bickering and slandering. Plisko wasn't afraid to put himself out there. He wasn't afraid to invest the time to make "his own point." These were "our stories" "our opinions."
For example, One of the first pods I shot was on Salt Lake's liberal mayor who held an anti-Bush rally when the President was in town. The mayor even refused to greet the President. Anyway I went to the rally got interviews from both sides and posted it online. It was "my story" "my experience." And the only way it would be seen on Current TV is if "I" shot it. Today Current is set up just to link that story from a big media outlet, and everyone can argue about what an ass the mayor is and what an ass the President is. But what they miss is a regular citizen on the ground in the middle of that story giving an honest take. Reporting on both sides of the issue. True citizen journalism.
Don't get me wrong you can still post video to the website but the website is so full of useless crap posted from CNN, FOX, NBC, CBS, Perez Hilton, Youtube, that it gets lost and swallowed by crap.
It would be awesome if people were required to write their own editorials or stories or shoot their own pods like the old days. Be required to use their real name and what city they are from as well. So that we can get a true feel for their content and make people be honest. That's truth.
To answer you question Dabne, I still produce content for Current because Current allows me to. They commission me or I still upload pieces I shoot on my own. I don't have to like the website to still produce stories. TV is still a powerful medium for someone like me. But I had the luxury of being one of the early members who experienced the more pure version of this site. I learned that if you really want to get some exposure get a camera and start shooting pods. The TV version still offers some compelling content and independent journalism, however the website is a mess. It's full of what Plisko called "mean jerks." I wouldn't pay attention to the stories on the front page anyway, it's just links from all the junk media I listed above.
I'll link you to a few stories that captured the true meaning of Current back in the day. Stories that used to fill up the old homepage. Stories that should be filling up the front page today but unfortunately we're left with silly links to sites like "Governor Palin's a milf!"

@dabne --
That's a fair criticism, but not entirely intentional. As I've mentioned before on other posts, we have a team of editors who help position stories from time to time, but this is mostly in cases that involve "breaking news," meaning news items that are important because of time-sensitivity (at which point you should see a "breaking news" tag accompany the story), and when items are not able to be aired for TV (typically due to footage rights issues, they were previously reported on in Current:News, or the sources are not credible).
Everything else is pretty much up to the algorithmic soup that determines our popularity on the site (I know, I know, you said "don't give me this algorithm bullshit," but please hear me out). Our algorithm takes activity like views, votes, shares, and a whole bunch of other stuff and determines popularity.
Now, it's an uncomfortable fact that the community on Current.com leans largely to the left, and while that's great for some people, it does make it difficult to have an objective representation story-wise on the site. Our editors do their best to try and balance this out on the home page while not taking too heavy a hand by placing content on the homepage.
We really don't want this to continue to be the case, so if you know more people that share your perspective, invite them to join Current and start contributing. When you post your items, share them on Current, but also reach out to other social networks you're involved in to help get more people interested in pro-conservative issues.
We've posted tips about becoming a homepage hero before. Here is a link: http://current.com/items/89055254_
To sum up, here are some brief tips to help you get stories on the home page:
1// Share your item on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or blog about it (if you blog) by using the "post" button. This helps improve popularity for a story.
2// Post a story: @ivxx has an extremely valid point, what you posted was not necessarily a story, but just an image with a very brief description. Clip a news story or blog post, and use this same image in your post by selecting other media (in the right column of the clipper), and then clipping on the "elsewhere" tab.
3// Add a description that provokes discussion. Don't just cut and paste the story, add a perspective. Why is this a progressive moment? What are the pros and cons to Palin as a VP? Why should Obama be worried about Palin as a pick? Tell the Current.com community your thoughts, ask a question, and prompt a discussion. People will disagree with you, but with every comment, your story will grow in popularity.
4// Tag your stories with relevant and popular topics. Sure, "Vice President, "Sarah Palin," and "Issues" are all relevant, but they aren't popular. Include those, but also add your story to "News," "Politics," and "News and Politics" if those are appropriate. This gets your story in front of the members of the community who follow those topics. The number next to the topic tells you how many items are there, and that's usually an indicator of how popular that topic is.
I hope this helps explain some of this. Believe me, our intent is not to harbor a view either way, but we are also trying to only step in editorially when we absolutely have to. Our editors do a great job of trying to balance the page out, so I'll send your feedback along to them as well.
Try those tips out and let me know what you think.
Best,

Scoot mac:
Thanks for your comments. I have watched a few of those stories you have linked and I agree the homepage should have more content like that. Stuff that is original and independent. That seems like more of what Al Gore most likely intended for his baby. I'm not so sure he wanted it to evolve into what it has. Thanks for sounding off.
Mario:
Thanks for replying and for admitting that most of your content is liberal based because of the make-up of your viewers. However, there are a few conservative's who are posting some decent stuff and those few need to be watched closely by the staff. Because we are an extreme minority. We may be the only balance you have. For example I started this thread to try to get some honest dialogue going...
http://current.com/items/89244330_the_american_idol_vs_the_american_soldier
This is a thread that for whatever reason hasn't been in the top 20 pages. Most likely because it is getting voted down by your audience, and your staff doesn't like the headline. But there you go again, what sense does it make for the conservative minority on this site to be getting voted down by the majority? That link above is a solid example. The headline may seem pro conservative but the content is legit, check it out. It even has over 20 comments. The Current front page is filled with far worse anti-conservative headlines.
How do you expect conservatives to stick around when your homepage looks like the Daily Kos. So what if your immediate viewers are liberal, Current needs to govern their home page to show balance. That is the only way they will ever get more conservatives to join the discussion. If that is even what you want. I hope it is because that is the only way real change will ever be made. Scoot Mac made a great point by saying that by being able to link big media it defeated the whole idea of independent thought. Why not require people to think for themselves and post there own editorials and stories? And in the Plisko link above he's absolutely right. Why would you encourage torpedoing of opinions? It's ridiculous to see all my posts torpedo'd because of political bias. Allowing for "mean Jerks" to say "hey you suck!" It's OK if they just want to say it, but to give them a button to bury my opinion that's anti-freedom.
Here are a few titles of links currently on your home page: Right this minute as I happen to check:

And because of this unknown it was politically risky, not brilliant.

funny how you like to complain about Barak's "rockstar" image
yet VP Palin comes in and you think its a brilliant strategy because NOW they have their own "celebrity" ...doesn't that imply they were jealous and envious so they decided to get one TOO..not very original!

Personally, I don't think she was McCain's best choice. Far from it as far as qualifications. However, it was politically brilliant, and I emphasize politically. That's why I call her a rock star because to be honest there are more qualified options than her. Just as I feel there are more qualified options than Barack on the left. I think they are both rock stars.

OH AND
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) will sue the Interior Department over its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species."We believe that the listing was unwarranted and that it's unprecedented to list a currently healthy population based on uncertain climate models," says Alaska Assistant Attorney General Steven Daugherty.
To green groups, that argument is, shall we say, unimpressive. "Even the Bush administration can't deny the reality of global warming," says Kassie Siegel of the Center for Biological Diversity. "The governor is aligning herself and the state of Alaska with the most discredited, fringe, extreme viewpoints by denying this." Palin's litigation comes mainly out of fear for Alaska's fossil-fuel-reliant economy, even though the wording of the Interior Department decision went to great lengths to ward off any new restrictions on oil and gas drilling.

It's sexest to say that McCain picked her just to get the female vote. And the fact that she has a background in oil shouldn't matter. The energy we invest in is up to us, the consumers.

Palin wants women to have their rapist's babies. Her words, not mine.
Check it: http://dwb.adn.com/news/politics/elections/2006/governor/story/8372383p-8266781c....
Quote: The candidates were pressed on their stances on abortion and were even asked what they would do if their own daughters were raped and became pregnant. Palin said she would support abortion only if the mother's life was in danger. When it came to her daughter, she said, "I would choose life."

There's a huge cultural schism here, that much is obvious. Though Alaska is part of the US, Alaskans have a much different view of the world than people in the lower 48 states. What seems like an important wilderness preservation to us, to Alaskans probably just seems like more wilderness in a state that's already something like 90% wilderness and twice the size of Texas.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for alternative energy and don't want the ANWR to be developed, but I can see how Alaskans might think that some of its 19,049,236 acres could be spared.

Also, hurricanes don't occur in Alaska. Ever.
But I guess I see your point. No sense in letting nature be the most destructive force on the planet. Why should it get to have all the fun? /sarcasm

While Katrina was a major blunder by our government. Hurricanes come and go. We aren't still clearing up the 1909 hurricane but we are still trying to find a way to manager the carbon emitted from that time. And continuing our dependence on black gold it could prove to have a longer lasting effect than any natural disaster. Well, other than getting hit by an asteroid.

CO2 = climate change
climate change = more hurricainesso if you think hurricaines are so destructive, why would you want to continue a sequence of events that ensures more of them?

I like many others I watched Palin except the Vp nomination, and the whole time. One question remained in my mind.Is McCain serious??I could not help but burst into a fit of laughter.A hockey Mom form Alaska....!!She spent the majority of her time talking about all 10 of her children.(exaggeration I know) And was I the only one who heard the "White Power" outburst from the crowd.I really see McCain's pick as desperation. McCain you have signed, sealed, and delivered Obama as the next President of the United States of America.Thank you

Q84:
You know, one thing we haven't had in the Whitehouse is a "hockey mom" now that would be change. Not another pandering lawyer. And when i say "had in the Whitehouse" , i mean in a positon of power, not in a position with the last president.

If she had more foreign experience i'd like to see her on top of the ticket. She tried (or did) turn down the earmark for the bridge to nowhere, which is one of many poster children against earmarks.
Big deal her husband works for an oil company, at least he works in a real job and is a licensed fisherman.
So she should be for helping keep oceans and inland water clean and helping get oil from the wasteland called ANWAR. - 3 years ago

Let me help you out here. Anwar is an area in Iraq. ANWR is in Alaska. The one in Iraq may be a wasteland now that we have been there fighting to stop all the production of weapons of mass destruction. As for ANWR, it was set aside for protection in 1960. That means we conserve it as is, not hold onto it until some idiots think the oil in there is going to lower the price at the pump. You think that oil gets sold here? You think that amount is going to have any impact on global supply?

Palin against the "bridge to nowhere" earmark?
Nope, you are wrong. Palin absolutely did want the "bridge to nowhere". She was all for that earmark, and a great many other earmarks too. Note that the Republicans have recently stopped attempting to claim that Palin was against this earmark - in her latest speeches, Palin is no longer claiming that she told them "Thanks, but no thanks" - the true facts have become too widely known for even the most ardent Republican to cling to their ignorance, at least on this matter.
The good thing I suppose, is that we have found out that it *is* possible to shame the Republicans out of lying, after all! Surprising!

Another sad attempt to pander to the lowest common denominator. What makes him think that women are just going to run over and vote for him just because he has a woman on the ticket? She pretty much is a republican patriarchy shill with her anti-choice, anti-fair wage stances.
