Former State Official Claims He Was Pressured to Fire Gov.'s Former Brother-in-Law

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain's surprise vice-presidential pick, is the subject of a legislative probe into claims that she abused her office by trying to get her former brother-in-law fired from his job as an Alaska state trooper.

Palin is likely to be deposed soon in the case, according to State Sen. Hollis French, who leads the state Senate's Legislative Counsel Committee.

French's committee unanimously authorized an investigation into the dismissal of the state's public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, who claims he balked at pressure to remove Trooper Mike Wooten, who had an acrimonious divorce from Palin's sister.

"I saw e-mails from [independent investigator Stephen] Branchflower two days ago to the Department of Law saying it's time to schedule a deposition of the governor, her chief of staff and the attorney general who had some contact with the case," French tells ABCNews.com.

While Palin was being introduced to the world at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, today, thousands of miles away in an Anchorage office, Branchflower was preparing to interview principals in the case, French said.

    • Teenage pregnancy, illegitimate children, bitter divorces and illegal vengeance using abuses of power? Sounds just like a Republican!

If Governor Palin is so inattentive to her own house, then she is without a doubt unqualified to be in the White House.

The investigation is on and those that are pointing this out will be proven a foolish.

He threatened her family. Firing a threatening person like that is a good idea.

      What if that's actually true?

      Oh wait truth doesn't matter.

      hahahahahah.....lamers.

no matter how screwed up the republican party gets, you right winger can't stand to criticize your GOP. what is wrong with you people? I am passionately leftist but if the dems do something against my standards, I criticize them. Take Hillary for example- I have never believed she was good for America. I agree with most of her policy positions, but I think she's a corrupt, selfish, joke of a politician.
Why can't you acknowledge that the GOP is in desperate need of change?
They're out of touch with America's needs, rife with sex scandals, abuses of power, hypocrisy and corruption. Find some good candidates already! Then we can make our politics about policy and not personal attacks, hypocritical moral one-ups-manship and meeting the needs of the people.

I don't know your party, friend. How about you name me some competent, progressive republicans and I'll say - congrats?
And as far as the gloves coming off, Obama has run a very clean campaign. Unlike the right wing PACs who paid millions of dollars to run an ad trying to convince people that Obama was linked to terrorism. Swiftboat anyone?
That's the kind of anti-democracy nonsense that ruins our political system. If you can't beat a candidate without smear tactics and out-right lies, then maybe you shouldn't win.

    • congress has a lower approval rating than the president, AND the media has a lower approval than congress.

just because a story is printed , does not mean a reporter actually fact checked.

there is a reason newspapers are losing readership fast, and mainstream tv is losing viewers fast.

"we" are voting with our feet, and mice.

    • As usual the media will turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the truth, as they are failing to note each lapse in McCain's near-term memory.

I wonder if he will remember her name next week.

    • It just makes me question the entire vetting process.

Did anyone know this was going on in the background for Palin?

Palin HAD to know. I am astonished at the hubris to allow this image of a squeeky clean outsider go down on national television with all of this background noise.

Lets not forget Biden and his "issues" in 1988.

    • Watch all the principals in this case for the next ten years, see who comes out of it with a big check from the GOP and oil companies (Sarah's buddies).

    • if she perverted the course of justice. If she pushed for this it will be proven in the court, jumping to conclusions and taking things at face value are part of what has gotten america in this mess

    • shun21, that still is abuse of power, especially when it involves family. From what I have read, her sister and brother in law have been divorced for quite a while and are having a custody battle. Trying to have him fired so as to render him income-less and therefore less likely to get custody of his child or children is tantamount to obstruction of justice. It also exposes Palin as someone who is fundamentally corrupt.

    • Vierotchka:

If he was abusive. At any rate, even if he was abusive, that's doesn't justify perverting the course of justice. If he was abusive, this would be proven in the court - getting him fired is trying to influence the court.

      @silencenomore
most custody cases are usually ruled in favor of the mother. palin's sister would have nothing to really worry about if her ex-husband was abusive.

palin would have only pulled this if the other side had something to disprove her sister's ability to have custody.

      vierotchka is correct.

    • She wont be desposed and even if she is they'll say she was defending her sister. I've heard that Palin may have pushed for the firing of her brother-in-law because he had abused her sister.

This is one ride that I wish I could get off of.
