5 arrested in protests at GOP convention site

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Thousands of protesters descended on the city hosting the Republican National Convention Monday, some smashing cars, puncturing tires and throwing bottles in a confrontations with pepper-spray wielding police who arrested at least five people.

Police said the size of the crowd shifted during the day before estimating it in the range of 8,000 to 10,000, many of whom marched peacefully. The arrests occurred in confrontations several blocks from the Xcel Energy Center where the GOP gaveled its convention to order in late afternoon. A handful of people were arrested for lighting a dumpster on fire and pushing it into a police car, said St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh.

Instead of a single coherent march that organizers had hoped for, fringe groups of anarchists and others wrought havoc along the streets between the state Capitol and the convention site. Some anarchists who had started the trash bin fire later tried to block a major intersection. Police quickly dispersed the group, then shot two tear gas canisters at the fleeing anarchists.

Pictures taken by Associated Press photographers showed officers using pepper spray on protesters who appeared to be trying to block streets. "There are people who are committing violations of law and they're being arrested," Walsh said.

About 200 people from a group called Funk the War noisily staged its own separate march. Wearing black clothes, bandanas and gas masks, some of their members smashed windows of cars and stores. They tipped over newspaper boxes, pulled a big trash bin into the street, bent the rear view mirrors on a bus and flipped heavy stone garbage bins on the sidewalks.

One man who seemed to be the leader of the group carried a yellow flag with the motto "Don't Tread on Me." The group chanted "Whose streets? Our streets!"

Meanwhile, a group of about 100 anarchists pushed a dumpster filled with trash and threw garbage in the streets and at cars. They also took down orange detour road signs. In hot pursuit were teams of riot officers carrying batons, rifles and guns that could be used to shoot tear gas.

The day's march was organized by a group called the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War, whose leaders said they hoped for a peaceful, family-friendly march. But police were on high alert after months of preparations by a self-described anarchist group called the RNC Welcoming Committee, which wasn't among the organizers of the march.

    • Dear Americans,

I would like to propose a "NATIONAL STRIKE DAY" for every American that is able. I have heard France has been doing this with great success. Please let us get everyone engaged here and anywhere we can post this message or one of your own.

The Questions I would ask here are as follows: What day should it be and when and how often? Once a month to start or? I believe this would really give the people back their power in this country. It is time to take action! If we do not take some action now as our Declaration of Independence says we have the right and obligation to, it looks like our country will fall.

People are losing their homes by the millions, and jobs of course with it, and our government with the media's help are trying to hide it from us. They are going to let us just fall, we have to save ourselves, to many good people's lives are being ruined.

This is the responsibility of a free people. Be sure the world bankers have a diabolical plan for us and unless we truly want to be slaves, we have to do something. I am open to other ideas, or maybe someone is already doing this (I heard something). I plead with each American here on Twitter to get involved and support this idea, and everywhere else we can get this message out.

This will be a peaceful way to get our government's attention, while we take back our country. Trust me if George Washington and the many honorable men and women who fought our war of Independence were here today, they would have already taken action years ago, many years ago, and I doubt it would be very peaceful.

Thus, no one works until our demands are met. Start with say five or ten demands. So my idea, proposal is that Americans just go to the street, your city hall, or what is ever appropriate in your state. No one works until our demands are met. But absolutely No violence, no vandalism, no matter what please. That will destroy our honest political cause afforded us by our constitution. In fact, we should make, in my opinion that it is a very somber and quite sit in, almost complete silence until our demands are met, so they cannot try and intimidate people or arrest them unlawfully as they have been doing. I believe this is very important point, no conflict what so ever, just freeze everything. We are all allowed to stay home from work. We need to get employers involved obviously.

My list of demands start as follows:

1.) No more bail outs, but instead money is to be given directly to the American people.
I heard some experts are saying that this is the only real cure, some 450,000.00 to each American is the answer to our financial crisis. http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?=26321

      2.) Abolish the IRS, period!

3.) Reinstate our fourth Amendment rights.

      4.)

      5.)

I hope others will give their suggestions. I would recommend we elect a board and thus work to organize our first AMERICAN NATIONAL STRIKE DAY, or if someone has already started this, please if anyone is aware of this let me know.

    • DEER DANCE

      Round, Round,

      Circumventing circuses,
      Lamenting in protest,
      To visible police,
      Presence sponsored fear,

      Battalions of riot police,
      With rubber bullet kisses,
      Baton courtesy,
      Service with a smile

Beyond the Staples Center you can see America,
With its tired, poor, avenging disgrace,
Peaceful, loving youth against the brutality,
      Of plastic existence.

      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around,
      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around.

      Round, Round,

      A rush of words,
      Pleading to disperse,
      Upon your naked walls, alive,
      A political call,
      The fall guy accord,
We can't afford to be neutral on a moving train,

Beyond the Staples Center you can see America,
With its tired, poor, avenging disgrace,
Peaceful, loving youth against the brutality,
      Of plastic existence.

      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around,
      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around.

      Push them around,
A deer dance, invitation to peace,
War staring you in the face, dressed in black.
      With a helmet, fierce,
Trained and appropriate for the malcontents,
      For the disproportioned malcontents,
The little boy smiled, it'll all be well,
The little boy smiled it'll all be well,

      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around,
      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around.
      Pushing little children,
      With their fully automatics,
They like to push the weak around,
      Push the weak around,
      Push the weak around,
      Push the weak around,
They like to push the weak around.

    • The numbers - as of late last night - are much higher then this article reports. According to Cold Snap Legal Collective, the arrest tally from Ramsey County Sheriff's Office as of 10:30 p.m 9/1/08 was.: 284 total; 130 felonies; 51 gross misdemeanors; 103 misdemeanors. Cold Snap is also reporting that many arrestees are being held without booking in the Ramsey Cty jail. Not in the system yet, told no info & they won't see judges until Wed.

    • In Greece burning trash bins and throwing stuff at the police is standard procedure...ha.. the so called "known but unknown" to the police are ruining the chance for a peaceful protest. Plus as mentioned above violent anarchists discredit the protest and draw the attention away from the point the protestors want to make. And it gives the opportunity to the opposition to make all kinds of conclusions and theories ragarding the real "intentions" of the anarchists...

btw in Greece most anarchists are rich kids with powerfull dads and lots of acquaintances so they get released pretty soon. i havent seen one of them incarcerated for his actions...We got so used to it now that the only solution we found is digging in. Barricading homes and stores so they look like little fortresses when a protest is up and about...

People's need to fiercely cling to partisan politics is one of the biggest problems with this country. Always judge the politicians on an individual basis. To do otherwise is narrow-minded and hazardous to America.

    • I have a few thoughts. The protesters can't be "smashing cars, puncturing tires and throwing bottles". That behavior completely discredits their message. Besides, it's criminal activity and they should be arrested if they're doing it.

At the same time, the police have been known to infiltrate and intentionally sabotage peaceful protests. Gotta keep that in mind.

Beating down and arresting journalists for reporting, however, is unequivocally intolerable. The wave of law suits that will inevitably follow this convention will have major implications on the future of the first amendment.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.” Thomas Jefferson.

I'm not saying that smashing car windows is that. I believe that to be misplaced and pointless, but forms of confrontation with equally confrontational elements in our society must be expected. Jefferson knew this. And I just don't think that this example would horrify him at all.

And on another level, your overall private property argument holds in my opinion little in rebuttal to my application of Jeffersonian rationale. Obviously indiscriminate destruction should be prevented but I cannot objectively boil it down to a 'property rights' argument. It's a significant point, but not the dominant theme Jefferson would have understood, I do believe.

    • It's hard to understand the blocking of traffic, breaking things up, and setting fires? I presume it is to get media attention. There is no way I can think of that the media will cover the fact that there are demonstrations without some radical behavior. Shame on the corporate media.

    • I wonder why? Let's see? Maybe it was because...

Protesters attacked members of the Connecticut delegation when they got off their buses near the Xcel Center,

They tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a toxic substance that burned their eyes and stained their clothes, one delegate Rob Simmons told KMSP-TV.

One 80-year-old member of the delegation had to be treated for injuries, and several other delegates had to rinse their eyes and clothing, the station reported.

Demonstrators also smashed windows, slashed car tires and threw bottles during the anti-war march, St. Paul police said.

Let's be sure and tell both sides of the story people.

I agree that the violence most definintely, probably, begun at the behest of the moire radical and anarchistic protesters. But this type of civil disobedience is refreshing, at least in the eyes of Thomas Jefferson. And if you don't respect that founding father, what is it about the current manifest of the RNC that warrants, no, mind you, NO protest whatsoever. You may agree ideologically with conservatism, but do you really believe that citizens don't have a right to protest loudly and indiscriminately at their elected officials in this great Free nation? What about the bigger picture?

And this isn't a defense of violence, it's just an attempt to engage your basic knee-jerk reactions Dabne and mold them into a discussion. So how about a new post, eh?

I agree. But that's not what I'm seeing. I'm seeing journalists arrested. Preemptive raids. Flash-smoke grenades. Private property confiscation, of the arbitrary (or possibly focused) nature.

People there to raise havoc must be dealt with, but on which side is the provocateur? There are decked out SWAT team looking brutes versus Liberal and more Revolutionary movements attempting to voice their truly more radical positions the only way they know how, protest. There are tasers versus bandannas and hammers. There are riot gear vesus slogans plastered on banners. This is the big picture in my opinion.

    • Rove: "Let's trot out a GIRRRL so we don't look like the fascists that we truly are."

The RNC thinks YOU ARE STUPID! The RNC HATES YOU.

The RNC wants to work you to death, stop you from forming unions, withhold fair wages, tries to strangle our free press, lies to our Congress daily, wantonly spends the American people's hard earned money only to produce historic and horrific trade deficits and huge debt, and they will sacrifice nothing but YOUR children to fight their wars that only line their own pockets with more money.

And if you make a dime, be prepared to have them steal the first five cents as they bail out their felonious friends from white-collar crimes using presidential pardons.

      The RNC is PURE EVIL.

Our founding fathers would kill all of them if they had a chance.

The writers of the Constitution are looking down from on high and crying because we've let the RNC destroy the fantastic government that was designed to keep us safe from thieves, liars and despots like the RNC.
