President Dimitri Medvedev criticized the European Union for having a biased approach in regards to the Georgian conflict. Medvedev however stated that the EU acted in a rational manner by not implementing sanctions against the Russian Federation. F. William Engdahl believes the EU response mirrors its dependence on Russian oil and gas. Engdahl goes on to further state that the US provoked Russia to respond militarily and the US as the dominant power is beginning to stumble and "to look desperately for ways to hold on to that power."
F. William Engdahl is an economist and author and the writer of the best selling book "A Century of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order." Mr Engdhahl has written on issues of energy, politics and economics for more than 30 years, beginning with the first oil shock in the early 1970s. Mr. Engdahl contributes regularly to a number of publications including Asia Times Online, Asia, Inc, Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Foresight magazine; Freitag and ZeitFragen newspapers in Germany and Switzerland respectively. He is based in Germany.

Symn8,
American Troops? WHERE!!!?? The only thing I'm aware of AND THE REALITY is that they are only in Cuba. Where did you get this nonsense!?
Americans are the one's that have helped Central America against every idiot the uneducated have elected because he promises them Food! Yes, the one with the most stupid and not-even-necessary-to-mention things actually make them choose the next leader!
Have you ever been there!?
When there was the Nicaraguan and Sandinistas, the Americans helped Panama and Costa Rica against these idiots, now even Nicaragua hates Sandinistas. This has also applied in the amount of times Argentina has come up with some stupid communistic regime which ends up killing thousands, then the US helped the people out first with food then protection and then Politically!
Right now, the issues in Latin America are because:
1. Chaves hates Cemex which is a MEXICAN PRIVATE company which he now simply wants to own. Which the corporation has come up with a Price just because they know if they don't, Chaves will simply take it.
2. Nicaragua stupidly again chose a Communist style government which is falling and have all the people looking for Jobs. If you ever visit it, you can buy leather shoes for $1. Go, take a look yourself. Keep your windows up, because kids will jump in the car just to get 25c from you!
3. In Bolivia, half of the people are sick with this uneducated President which is a clown of Chaves, they are voting to get rid of him, but how can you if the voting is fully influenced by the President itself?
4. Chaves has this big tongue, only because of Oil prices. You are vomiting Ignorance.

american cannot sanction russia even if they wanted to. second most of europe depends on russia for its natural resources so europe would be affected more so than the us and that wouldn't be a good thing for the states by extension. third if we ever go to war forget safe heavens this will be it. nowhere in the world would you be able to go that the war will not affect you. and lastly the military is in not so greater shape right now thanks to bush and with multiple countries wanting the states to leave the bases and go back home this will not be great. also the fact that america is in debted to foreign countries so there we are fucked on the international stage and bush knows it.

Why should America assert its place as the "dominant nation of the world"? It is literally bankrupt and has no economic leverage on Russia whatsoever. In fact, Russia holds some $75 billion of of U.S. Agency Securities as well as billions in US bonds which it can dump and invest in the EU or Asia instead - this would precipitate the US into a deep depression. The US and NATO depend on Russia for its supply lines to Afghanistan. Should Russia suspend that help, our men in Afghanistan would be sitting ducks. Russia is the third largest economy in the world after China and Japan, it is free of debt and deficit. Listen to the video again, carefully. The US now is grasping at straws.

It isn't and has no intention of being so. They do have a democracy, but it isn't built on the corrupt American model of "democracy" which is a joke. American dissidents and journalists are also killed in the USA, you know.
The world doesn't hate Russia, only idiots do.

No No No. You may have your opinion and your saying and this is always respected but you can consider yourself a true Ignorant if you are so naive to think Russia is even close to be a "savior" or CLOSE. It might even fall as a Terrorist country more than anything else!
All the hate and Neo-Nazis are Russian. You might need to be reminded of a Video from Geoff? From Russia with Hate? They have propagated and tolerated this and they are all over Europe and Ukraine, etc...
Seriously, here is where you fall and the fact and it doesn't matter how strong and powerful and rich Russia could be. EVERYONE hates RUSSIA. Specially in Latin America, even Communistish Groups do. Hell, only Cuba supports Russia and Chaves and the Bolivian Presidents, which by the way. The 3 of them have been in Jail for killings, they are heavily hated in their Country and the only reason they are in Power is because of Cuba's brain washing and the fact of Living in an Island. And the case of Venezuela and Bolivia it's because they bought people's vote with Baskets of food and at gun point. Yes, the classic 5% votes of already dead people did happen!!!

I can't speak on Russian politics but dude you clearly don't understand the Latin American politics.or politicians for that matter. As we speak there is a major unrest in the Latin America against the presence of American troops there. in 2002 Chavez was kidnap and taken out of power in a coup the PEOPLE demanded him back and 2 days later he was reinstated as the president. and he is very very popular in Venezuela. Latin America is in the process of forming a union the likes of the European union to counter the united states influence in the region. Russia may actually start gaining ground in latin america sooner rather than later. and as far as bolivia the president that the people demanded to resign was backed by the us in fact most of the unpopular leaders in Latin America were backed by the us that's why they are trying to counter the us influence now. as far as Russia having neonazi, america has the same thing and some even have mainstream support. Also Russia has a lot of leverage on the world stage more than most people care to admit or know about.

Okay guys, time to agree to disagree and back away. You both have very strong opinions on this issue, so it's easy for things to get personal, but we don't want to go there. Take a deep breath and let it go. I'm locking this thread.

The best way for America to assert its place as the dominant nation of the world is, in my opinion, to first; take economic action against russia. I'm not sure if America is in a position to be able to threaten Russia using economics because I'm not familiar with the Russian economy. But if we have any kind of leverage on them, we need to apply pressure.
Second; I think that we need to make a plan for mobilization. If another World War breaks out, America may not be as lucky as she was in the first two. If the war does break out, combat will likely take place on American soil. Americans need to be ready to move in the event of an attack. And we need to have a solid concrete plan for getting our defense into position to protect civilians, and our offense into areas that they need to be in order to make blows. We don't need to start implementing the plans, but they need to be made and made known to the public. We should let the World know that we are ready.
Better safe then sorry.
