Bush to Withdraw 8,000 Troops in Iraq by February

The White House says President George Bush has decided to withdraw about 8.000 U.S. troops from Iraq by next February and that he will announce the plan in a speech Tuesday in Washington.

A transcript of that speech was released on Monday.

In the prepared remarks, Mr. Bush says the U.S. military will bring home 3,400 combat support forces from Iraq in the next few months.

He also says a Marine battalion will leave Iraq's Anbar province by November and an army combat brigade will withdraw from Iraq in February.

Mr. Bush says a Marine battalion that was due to be sent to Iraq in November will instead go to Afghanistan and an army combat brigade will follow in January.

President Bush's announcements on troop levels are in line with recommendations he received from his top defense advisers last week.

U.S. officials have said the defense chiefs recommended waiting until early next year to withdraw the next combat brigade from Iraq. Mr. Bush leaves office in January.

The White House has said the president does not want to do anything that could reverse the security gains made in Iraq during the past year.

U.S. commanders have expressed hope that Iraq's sharp drop in violence will free up more U.S. forces to fight an escalating insurgency in Afghanistan.

The United States now has 15 combat brigades in Iraq and a total of 140,000 troops. The U.S. military contingent in Afghanistan numbers about 34,000.

    • The oil isn't drying up, and Bush doesn't care what the American people think. His timeline coincides with the fact that the neocons raped, pillaged and plundered Iraq of everything.

For example, Iraq operates without import tarriffs unlike any other country in the world,
Iraq's weathiest had a complete elimination of taxes on business revenues.
Iraq's banks, bridges and water companies were sold to foreign operators.
      Iraq will join the WTO.
All state owned companies are privatized
Instituted a flat tax capped at 15% on corporate and individuals who bought such companies.
Eliminated taxes on foreign grown food, to allow a flood of grain without tariffs mainly supplied by the US.
Cheap imports cause loss of jobs for Iraqi's
Iraqi trade unions are still banned.
1.5 billion dollars worth of oil disappeared because the oil is unmetered, who has it huh?
millions of dollars given to groups that never and no longer exist.
Accountants can't account for all the money spent.
Its give Bush/Cheney seats on OPEC.
Billions of cash gone to Wolfowitz, Bremer, Chalabi.

This little tidbits gleaned from Greg Palast's book Armed Madhouse. Read that book and weep people.

The real sickening thing here is now they want to go back to Afghanistan, not for nation building but I am seriously afraid its for nation plundering.

All in the name of democracy. Bullshit.

    • Just in time for the elections Bush makes changes in deployment of troops. I agree that they probably are not coming home anytime soon. Bush and Cheney sound like they intend to go out with a big bang.

    • Anyone else notice the convenient timing? Bush wont even be in office... the next president will be the one making this decision. Saying, "We will withdraw 8,000 troops by February 2009" is like saying, "I won't be withdrawing any more troops while I'm president." WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

Even after this troop pullout (if it happens), we will just be right back to pre-surge numbers.

    • Appreciation is positive reinforcement for showing someone the 'right' way of doing something.

If you just BASH someone then they'll do whatever the hell they can within their power no matter how you feel about it.

You actually show some sort of care that reinforces good then you'll accomplish something.

      Bashing Bush has worked? Where?

Suppose those that are so much smarter than he would realize that all they are doing is failing.

It's not your game and your rules....learn the rules, play the game, and make something positive happen.

But all people can do is churn the waters and drown us all in their negative mire.

    • J_Jammer:

I'm glad you are the only one that knows what is "relevant" god forbid anyone else have that ability.

I'm sure you're not the first person to "raise relevant" topics....seeing how that's done no good...neither will yours.

Hopefully you still try no matter how just like who you dislike you are.

    • Good news but belated - Wouldn't the deranged and delusional belief of his own 'exceptionalism' with these sorts of decisions would be hilarious if it wasn't responsible for inumerable deaths?

    • It's always good news to hear about plans to bring them home. I hope this isn't a political ploy. Since this will not even get us to pre-surge levels I will refrain from doing cartwheels.

    • Im glad some troops are coming home! I hope it means the beginning of the end.

Is bush just trying to do something that will please Americans and make up for other faults? If he's making any executive decisions right now, it should be to safely withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. Other than that, I think he can really stop now.
