Biologists on the verge of creating new form of life

It's not as Frankensteinian as it sounds. Instead, a lab led by Jack Szostak, a molecular biologist at Harvard Medical School, is building simple cell models that can almost be called life.
Szostak's protocells are built from fatty molecules that can trap bits of nucleic acids that contain the source code for replication. Combined with a process that harnesses external energy from the sun or chemical reactions, they could form a self-replicating, evolving system that satisfies the conditions of life, but isn't anything like life on earth now, but might represent life as it began or could exist elsewhere in the universe.
While his latest work remains unpublished, Szostak described preliminary new success in getting protocells with genetic information inside them to replicate at the XV International Conference on the Origin of Life in Florence, Italy, last week. The replication isn't wholly autonomous, so it's not quite artificial life yet, but it is as close as anyone has ever come to turning chemicals into biological organisms.

So...we are going to be able to create something we don't understand? Awesome! ....because we are totally smart enough to NOT screw this up and potentially create a problem worse than anything we've got thus far.

Wow, that's amazing - I wonder if there's a way to speed up their replication and evolution processes, leave them to it, and see what happens...

i gotta get a look at the full report when it's published. this article leaves out all of the scientific goodies. is it a normal phospholipid bilayer? which nucleic acids and proteins are they going to use? i need details! its kinda cheating if they're using relatively advanced molecular components that would have taken millions of years evolve to build this cell.

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."

This won't sit well with the conservative christians who say that only God can create life. I can't help but remember all the people that I've argued against who have told me that it will be impossible to ever recreate life...
I can't wait to break the news!

Looks like once again a scientist desperately needs to get laid. Sheesh, first sexy artificial intelligence, then cloning, now life from whatever they scrape up off their toenails. The search for scientists to get booty will push us into the next age!

I don't know if he's the first to do this, as creating a novel lifeform is a project that many engineers in the synthetic biology field aspire to do.
But guys, I don't think you understand the significance of this. It isn't some scientist just using electricity and water or anything, they're actually CREATING life by building it from scratch.
Even though this might be a really simple lifeform it hints at the advances in our technology and what could be possible in the future... and we have to consider its moral implications.

Apparently Radio 4 are planning a Torchwood CERN special (hehe, geeksville). I wonder if it'll have the 'War of the Worlds' effect? Somehow I doubt it.
And did you know that CERN physicist Brian Cox is a former member of chart-toppers D:Ream? And you thought things couldn't (only) get better...

I can see the conversation now.
Scientist: I have created LIFE! :D
Person: AWESOME! What does it do?!
Scientist: Um, well...it replicates.
Person: Does it talk?
Scientist: No.
Person: Does it sleep?
Scientist: Not really.
Person: Is it cute?
Scientist: Not at all.
Person: ...So what does it do?!
Scientist: Just...replicates, really.
Person: Oh. Uh, that's great, man.

Enjoy_Cannabis:
what purpose? well, because we can! because as humans we must continue to explore our environment. scientists dont just do things willy-nilly ... they do them because in the process we learn something new about the world we live in ... about how we came to being!
this is a massive leap forward for humanity. very exciting!
