Known as "The Bear" Don Haskins was a basketball player, coach and an unsuspecting civil rights leader. In college, Haskins played under the famous coach Henry Iba at Oklahoma A&M. As a coach, he won 14 Conference championships, played in 14 NCAA tournaments and led the Miners to the 1966 Championship. He will be best known however for his decision to start five African American players in the 1966 Championship game against Kentucky. This decision led to many other schools desegregating their athletics teams. Coach Haskins died at his home in El Paso, Texas. He was 78 years old.
