Obama - Biden: What can feminists expect?

Eleanor Smeal: President of the Feminist Majority. Two term President of National Organizaiton for Women (NOW). Smeal is the author of "How and Why Women Will Elect the Next President " (Harper and Row, 1984), which predicted that women’s votes would be decisive in presidential politics. For over 30 years, Smeal has been on the frontlines fighting for women’s equality. For over two decades, she has played a leading role in both national and state campaigns to win women’s rights legislation and in a number of landmark state and federal court cases for women’s rights.

    • Great post!

It is disturbing to take notice of how "women's issues" are continually swept under the rug as though they weren't important and women didn't partake in the electoral process.

      *sigh*

    • I support equality and would like to see women's rights increase (since all things aside women are still often times recieving the short end of the stick) but i can't help but laugh when those people go around asking to end women's suffrage and get some women to ignorantly sign it.

    • Feminists have promoted gender warfare for so long.

They separate women from men and their families. They are partially responsible for the family breakdown in this country

The results are terrible. Today 80 % of divorces are initiated by women. Many women who have followed the gender warfare mantras are all alone feeling sorry for themselves. Men run away from them as far as they can.

The NOW crowds do not represent the majority of women.

Right. There's no possible chance that the men in these relationships had anything to do with the 'initiated divorces.' A good friend of mine who is quite ambitious was literally dragged out of her own house because she was subservient enough. Speaking her mind, and wanting to get a PH.d was much more than he could handle. She's had bottles thrown at her, has been threatened and belittled as well. Does her asking for a divorce include her in your 80 % b.s. stat?

Perhaps it is the men who have a hard time treating women with the same respect they expect. If both of us are working, then there should be shared responsibility. Believe me, it can work. Blaming the plight of marriages on feminists is quite simple minded. Some people should never had gotten married in the first place.

    • What a great video! Thank you for posting it. I also agree with your comments synclaire and wisegrrl. This video needs to be available to as many female and male voters as possible to counter the GOP's position in regard to women.

What is done to one in our world is done to us all.

Equity in pay lifts children out of poverty. Equality ensures that our children will have more opportunities not less.

Violence against women, children, and men (5%+ of men are abused in this nation) needs to have national attention.

The national attention I see on domestic violence is when yet another man grabs his children, shoots his exwife, shoots the kids, and then commits suicide.

It is common knowledge in all who work in domestic violence that men use children, money, unwanted sex, and violence --including killing children's pets-- to control women. They control their partners by threatening to kill other family members and/or themselves. More violence happens when women are pregnant and when find they seek safety and strength to leave the relationship by going to shelters or obtaining restraining orders. Domestic violence calls are some of the most dangerous calls for policemen to respond to and cause injuries to them as well.

When domestic violence ends, when women earn the same pay as men for the same work, and when women have paid sick leave and the same opportunity to be promoted or god forbid President then we can talk about other issues.

When I look to Washington DC at elected officials I still see White Males as the predominant race / gender.

What I find the most telling is that the majority of voters are women and we have had Reagan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr. and maybe McCain in office. I find it SAD and Frightening that the women who vote GOP are voting against their own best interests.

The right to choose an abortion is everyone's right. If a conservative Right to Lifer doesn't believe in it then don't have one.

The right to live free of terror from domestic violence is everyone's right. I have worked with countless families torn and bloody that are victims of domestic violence. It has been my life's work. Shelters do not discriminate between Democrats and GOP.

Women seeking shelter do not have to pay to have a safe place to be. Safety and shelter is offered to all women and children regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, or voting beliefs.

Good for the Democratic Party that they ensure for all women, regardless of whether they vote for or against themselves, the right to have sick leave, healthcare, equity in pay, Family Medical Leave among other issues.

    • Women should have equal if not even more rights than men.

After all without women there would be no more future generations

Eleanor Smeal should be given any platform to speak up for even more womens rights.

Governments are dominated by males and look at the predicament the US is in today

      Uhm.....bad argument.

By stating that you're stating that the women that have medical issues or tubes tied are lower women than those that can shove out babies.

I wouldn't give my credence to a gender that would rather abort a baby than have one.

So they are NOT better via that line of thinking.

    • Real News? *rolls eyes until they spin violently out of control* That's like someone standing up in front of a group of people and state "I'm a smart person listen to me." Who here would listen and who here would already be put off by such a comment?

Don't say what you are, show it.

Women do get the short end with payment. But so do people who don't go to University but are better at a job than someone who has. Essentially someone is being paid just for going to school not how they can preform their job.

Women are even paid lower in movies and women even have a short life in movies compared to men.

I think it's awesome to fight for better rights.

I do not think it's awesome that anyone would have a bloc that votes one way. It's like sheep.

It's like the Christians (most) do for Republicans.

      It's actually disturbing.

    • Not just equality, but FAIRNESS, period.

There are cultures and religions (particularly one that is in the news alot) whose male members treat women as property.

There are also cultures where boys are valued more than girls. Why do you think many Americans (and other Westerners) adopt Chinese girls and girls from other countries? Because if the parents do not want a girl when she is born, they abandon her or give her up for adoption. If they find out their child is a girl before she is born, guess what? Yes, it happens elsewhere ... where they can get away with it.

    • lol um what? Women were completely at the mercy of men until feminists/humanists (who are not only women but, loads of men also) stood up and changed the law and got women the right to vote, the right to own property, the right to inherit property, the right to an education, the right to their own bodies etc etc. Before women were owned by their fathers or male relatives so actually you are wrong, many men have treated (and still do in many parts of the world) women as property. Feminism is not about making men then enemy. Feminism is about equality and I don't understand why so many people are threatened by it.
Solei10, your diatribe is pretty hilarious and you're not answering my question...what are the duties and responsibilities of men? I really want to know what "duties" I've been missing in my life or do duties only apply to women? Men have always had the power, men have always made the laws but, there has never been any "bill of responsibilities and duties" for men. Why is it "many women failed their families?" Many men have "failed greatly to their families", you know all that domestic violence, walking out on the family, screwing around and getting many woman pregnant...I guess that would be unplanned fatherhood now wouldn't it. ;p

    • Many men if not most have not treated women as property. Those a premade feminist mantras where man is the enemy.

You are not responding to my comment.

I would never write a list a rights without a list of duties and responsiblitiies. Their platform is pretty low

Many women have failed greatly to their families, husbands and children. An honest platform whould include that

When will NOW assum the responsibility of the failure of Planned Parenthood or what I called unplanned motherhood . ?

    • soleil10:

NOW and Planned Parenthood are SEPARATE organizations. Yes, they have many issues in-common, have worked together on many initiatives. But they are separate from each other. They have their own presidents. NOW's is former Planned Parenthood President Kim Gandy, and Planned Parenthood's current president is Cecile Richards- daugther of the late, great, Texas governor Ann, who told it like it was and took no b.s. (I had to rub it in. She is one of my heroines on this planet). For the record, Planned Parenthoods are about much, much more than abortions. They are about birth control and preventive, medical care. Did you know that thanks to our screwed-up health care system, many women visit Planned Parenthoods for just general routine medical care? Take that away and where are they going to get health care that is affordable and without insurance red-tape worries?? Tell me where.

    • soleil10:

many men have also failed their families... but the issue here is not about men, it is about women. women who are being abused and maltreated. distorting the focus to torn families is not the issue, because men have just as much of a role to their families as women and have just as much *responsibility* to insure that they remain intact.

I agree, women have a duty to their family, but tell me, do you think that men do not? that it is not their job or concern to take care of their family? secondly, have you ever even met a feminist? feminisim is not about complete liberation from any and all responsibilities. it is about ensuring that men have just as much responsibility as women, not just in the home, but outside in the working world. i

f you can find me a family where the husband and wife are treated with equal *respect*, have equal pay, both working out of the home, and take equal part in the raising of their children and care of the home, and yet, somehow, their family suffers from it, let me know.

the entire point of the video was about the democratic party and what they are doing for women (though, i will admit, it isn't a great comparison to the republican party since it doesn't seem like they were even mentioned). it has absolutely nothing to do with women's "duties" and "responsibilities."

    • NOW is the organization for liberal women. It does not speak for many women. They need to change their name and be honest.

In this whole video, all we hear are the rights of women. I never heard once the duty and repsonsiblities of women.

      Why ?

After everyone in this country will have made his or her list of rights, what are we going to do.

      It is so immature.

If men were to make a list, these feminists would be blown away.

So what are the duties and responsibilities of men? And I think after centuries of being treated as property women have the right to stand up and demand equal rights. Why is that so wrong?

    • soleil10:

Men don't need a list because men (specifically, white men) have controlled the whole of American society since its' inception. Our country began in the late 1700s, but women didn't get the right to vote for almost two centuries. During that time, their DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES were relegated to housework and child-rearing (when they weren't being completely exploited), and having their voices stifled by subjugation.

Women (and minorities) are still held back in our society, so your comment about duty and responsibility falls upon its' own blade. The women's movement strives to have their FAIR share of fundamental American rights, opportunities and duties, as opposed to what portion of those things MEN deem appropriate.

There is a difference between wanting equality, and condemning all "white men" for the hardships begotten generations ago. While I definately do not condone the actions of men of the past, still I am punished for it?? Seems redundant and hypocritical to me..... I personally have no rights as a father soley because of my gender, so dont think discrimination is a one way street.

    • Sadly, the reason the mainstream media doesn't focus properly on women's issues in politics (and, let's face it, anything of substance) is that it's mostly filtered and directed through the minds of men who still, mistakenly, think they know where women's interests lie and how to address them for profit.
Sarah Haskin's has pointed out this rediculous trend, several times over, in her reports on "Infomania" and gets it right every time.
      Another great post, Vierotchka.

    • Thank you for posting this. It seems issues like these get lost when the main stream media just focuses on gender of a candidate and not on the actually issues they support. Just because someone has benefited from feminism does not make them a feminist!
