The American Civil Liberties Union is representing dozens of protestors arrested at the RNC.

Chuck Samuelson of the ACLU says much of the police repression during the RNC was based on law coming out of the Patriot Act.

Charles (Chuck) Samuelson is the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota. He graduated from Syracuse University with a B.A. in Medieval History and a minor in political science. He studied at Freiburg University in Germany and pursued a doctorate in Medieval History at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He moved to the Twin Cities in 1977 and has pursued a career in the non-profit sector for the past 25 years.

    • Im actuaslly suprized they took this long to use the patriot act in this manner... This is exactly what the crtitics said it was going to be used for... we kept a blind eye when it was used for drug dealers, we turned our heads when it was used to imprison pedophiles, now this...... (disclaimor i do not support either of the two cited offenses, but the facts are the facts)

    • Could the police, armed and fully equipped in riot gear complete with mounted backup be considered guilty of unlawful assembly?

This was, after all supposed to be a democratically arrange rally

You realise when you see actions of this nature in "The land of the free" that countries invaded by the USA are reluctant to have "american style democracy" forced upon them.

In some instances they cannot forsee any change to what they are undergoing themselves

      God bless America

    • It is sad how this country's government has used the tragedy of 911 to make every group a potential terrorist cell.

This way of dealing has shown the true terrorists that they have managed to rape us of our principals as a free society. Suicide bombers don't lurk in protest marches.

    • I couldn't be more pleased that the ACLU has stayed on top of this, seemingly endless, stream of injustices, courtesy of that damned all-encompassing "Patriot Act".
The pre-emptive and violent actions taken by the police, the Secret Service and many more "hired guns" (with full blessings from the RNC and this administration) are just the latest in a long series of unconstitutional moves that need to be fully investigated, ultimately leading to criminal prosecution of those who, mistakenly, believe that they represent the law while acting above and beyond it.
      Go, ACLU!
