High school for gay students proposed

The plan comes from the people who run the Greater Lawndale Little Village High School for Social Justice. They say the new campus would be open to all students, but would especially seek to foster a violence-free atmosphere for students who are often targeted for their sexual orientation. The charter school proposal is still in the early stages. A public hearing is set for Sept. 18, and the proposal requires approval by an evaluation team and then Chicago Public Schools Chief Arne Duncan before it goes before the school board.
Conservatives say the Social Justice High School-Pride Campus would be a misuse of public funds and require administrators to take a moral stance on homosexuality, a judgment well above their pay grade. Even some gay rights advocates argue that isolating the gay and lesbian population from the mainstream would be damaging and prevent different groups of students from learning to interact.
“If we’re going to set up a separate school, let’s put the bullies in the school and not our gays kids,” said Rick Garcia, public policy director of Equality Illinois, the state’s largest gay rights group. “Kids should be able to go to school in a safe environment wherever they are.”
The importance of creating a safe environment at least partially stems from the higher risks that gay, lesbian and bisexual students face. Experts say those kids are at greater risk of dropping out of school, abusing drugs and alcohol and are two to three times more likely to attempt to commit suicide. A 2003 district survey shows that gay and lesbian youth also are three times more likely to miss school because they feel unsafe.
Do you think this proposal is a good idea or will it just result in the creation of a 'gay ghetto' that harms both the LGBT community and society at large?

Ok, so let us suppose that a gay High School is set up.
Fine.
But wait....
It will be known as the "gay high school"....
I see a heck of a lot of discrimination here don't you?
Just think about it....

I agree with many people here; segregation is not the answer! Although some strides might be made in them being more comfortable with their behavior, it will only isolate them from the real world, and the problems that they will face there. High school, no matter how much people hate it, teaches life lessons. And what should be done is to implement programs that will teach awareness and understanding about the LGBT community. I went to a school that was the first all black school and like to be segregated, but it stopped them from experiencing the true challenges, and sheltered them. Schools across the nation just need to put programs in place to help these students and increase tougher punishments for bullies.

Gay students need to be nurtured in mainstream schools with both support groups for the minorities and tolerance lessons for the majority

I think it could be very cool. As long as no one is forced to go, there is no problem whatsoever. It only makes sense to create a school around such a deeply shared value. I would imagine many would find such an environment a safe place to grow and learn.

I don't think this is a good idea because kids need to be able to cope with differences among people instead of ridiculing them. I believe this seperation would only make things worse for the gays, leasbians etc. It would not prepare them for the real world, which is definately not segregated.

If you want people to get along don't separate them! Put them together and make each group tolerant of one another. Face your challenges instead of running away from them!

continuing this type of thinking is wrong. we should be taught to tolerate everyone, not get rid of what we do not like.

Are these people serious?
Has our country changed so much in the past 60 years that we think the answer to prejudice is segregation and not the other way around?

All schools should be open to and supportive of LGBT students in the first place. And if those kids are getting bullied, its the responsibility of the administration to stop and prevent the bullying

Retarded.
This is not the way to go about making gay kids feel more comfortable, even if it provides a so-called safe haven.
If anything, it will make it that much harder to adjust to the real world outside the bubble that this school would create. There are indeed serious problems for gay kids in high school (threat of violence, socially outcast, suicide, etc.), but segregation is not the answer. Separate is not equal.

Can you imagine the uproar there would be if there was a school for only straight kids?
This is just wrong. - 3 years ago

Putting all the homosexual kids in a cage for a zoo exibit is the vibe I get from this article.
Even though they're trying to be more tolerant and understanding seoeration seems more like a means to keep them away from the public than to embrace a different way of life.

I don't think this is the best answer...it hopes to help the kids it's open to but it's just going to allow those opposed or negative towards gays and transsexuals to harass them and know exactly where they are and could potentially end up being very dangerous...

I hope they'll have personal body guards walking them home. I could imagine the preying that could go on by neighboring homophobes.

I don't think that separation is the answer. While a "save haven" sounds nice, we need to change the world for the better, not hide from it. Public schools should have ways of dealing with all kinds of bullying, should encourage GSAs and other queer oriented clubs to form, and should educate all faculty in queer issues so that the schools are safe and nurturing to all.
