Tens of thousands of Britons are stranded abroad after the country's third largest package holiday group went into Bankruptcy.

The XL Leisure Group, which operates XL airlines, flies to 50 destinations, mainly in the Mediterranean. All its flights have now been cancelled and its aircraft grounded. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said 85,000 people could be stranded abroad and 200,000 have made advance bookings with the company.

    • As many as 90,000 people, that's just unbelievable. It's going to take so many flights to get them back! I personally would rather be stranded abroad than here though...

    • My friends parents were stuck abroad, they were compensated with a new flight home, only problem was, the flight home was to Leeds, when they live in Liverpool.

    • My bro just stopped by. He is set to lose over 1K. He made the mistake of paying with a Visa Debit Card, rather than Credit Card. By your food and everyday items with your debit card and use a credit card for all other items. This is just the start!

    • Right. Why when this happens do BAA or whoever not immediately take charge of the planes and staff and get everyone back to blighty??? I mean, it wouldn't be any more difficult than the 20,000 families all individually having to book new flights???

    • Imagine if all 85,000 people stayed where they were, settled and procreated with the locals.

In years to come, sociologists would scratch their heads over how and why new Anglicised clans suddenly sprung up out of nowhere, archaeologists would wonder why lots of pubs and fry-up cafes popped up overnight and generations of people would gather on St George's Day across the Med and pay homage to their forefathers.

      This could be amazing.

    • I bet none of the poor passengers had any idea that their flights were in danger like XL would have. I also bet the over-priced travel insurance that gets tacked on when you book doesn't cover this situation either.

    • XL were the third biggest tour operator in the UK. If they aren't safe from financial collapse then who is?

If your planning a holiday I'd advise that you make sure you have decent travel insurance and book with a credit card otherwise you could end up stranded on the other side of world.

At least the weather will be nice though!?

    • XL have previously failed to make payments within the allotted timeframe - they kinda knew this was coming. I bet the anti-aviation climate change gang are having a field day.

    • On the plus side, i might get the apartment i wanted for my holiday as the people who currently have it reserved are flying with XL. Every cloud eh?

    • That would suck so hard. I hate airports at the best of times but turning up and hearing I was stuck there and not going on holiday would make me so angry.
