Obama votes 'Present' on new economic rescue plan for now

Sen. Barack Obama today met with some of his many economic advisors and made an announcement that he was not going to make an announcement about any new plan to plan plans.

Obama did suggest a bipartisan effort to deal with the financial crisis wreaking havoc on Wall Street, always a good idea for any candidate after the primaries because it sounds good and costs nothing.

But Obama did not present any detailed proposal of his own for how to resolve the monetary situation that has roiled world markets in recent days.

Obama's inaction prompted Jay Leno in his opening monologue tonight on "The Tonight Show" to point out an essential presidential campaign unfairness, that Obama has criticized McCain's economic plan but the Republican can't respond because "nobody knows what it is yet."

After meeting with his top economic advisers, the Democratic presidential candidate said this was not the time to present specific details for how to fix the immediate problem, a reversal from what he had said a day earlier. Nor did he explain when a good time would be to explain such a rescue from the current financial crisis.

"Given the gravity of this situation," Obama said with gravity, "based on conversations I've had with both Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke, I will refrain from presenting a....

...more detailed blueprint about how an immediate plan might be structured until I can fully review details of the plan proposed by the Treasury and Federal Reserve."

    • In 2002, for example, he pushed for tougher corporate-accounting standards after the scandals at Enron and other corporations. "I have long opposed unnecessary regulation of business activity, mindful that the heavy hand of government can discourage innovation. But in the current climate, only a restoration of the system of checks and balances that once protected the American investor, and that has seriously deteriorated over the past 10 years, can restore the confidence that makes financial markets work," McCain said.

In 2006, he called for tighter regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two federally chartered, privately run mortgage giants that the government now has taken over. "If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole," McCain said.

Now, The single biggest point I recieved from his plan on this economic(which he said Friday) problem is clarity. Wow I could have sware Paulson said the same thing this morning.
Second he said we need one oversite commite that will do the job correctly not several that do not do their job or do it poorly

Let me say this, Yes I am a Repulican!!!
That being out there. I believe in my heart that John McCain will always do whats Right. He always has. He is not afraid to place what is right ahead of himself, our party and the concerns of the lobbists or washington "fat cats".

    • Obama has his plan on his website and he laid out a couple of specific in his speech earlier but the most important thing he did was that he chose to wait and see what the people who actually have hands on immediate response to come out with thier plan so that he can understand the situation and make a decision accordingly. it is however not going to change your view because I assume that you guys have already made up your minds about him. but do you think that its careless for anyone to jump up and propose their plan that maybe counter to what is actually being done. think about it , NO ONE in the senate had any idea what the plan was but good old john decided to come up with his plan and didn't even wait to check what the people directly responding to the situation had to say . so maybe great leadership or a very dumb mistake. I wonder if you guys could even name what McCain has proposed. (hint its not much different to what Obama has)

    • Leno is correct. Obamas non stance on this issue demonstrates yet again his lack of leadership. He has voted "present" many times before. He will be a joke as a president.

    • I am a Democrat who is not so blinded by Senator Obama's rock star status as to vote for him. I am a Democrat who is not so mired in partisanship that I will vote for anyone just because they have a "D" behind their name. I am a Democrat who cares more about our country than to let some smooth talking con man with no plans, no qualifications, and no experience take the reins. Obama is a figment of your imagination, he is whatever you want him to be, he lives on the air, whatever your wildest dream is he will grant, only none of it he can really do.

    • Obama has an energy plan that far surpasses McSAME. Obama has a health plan. Obama will take care of the middle class. Obama has a financial plan.

Of course JohnA you are obviously a GOP type guy and seem wedded to your beliefs so not point in arguing.

good luck to you I intend to be on the winning side:

Environment, Healthcare, Social Programs, and an end to a ugly war.

Before you say another word John A-- our son put his life on the line as a Marine in Iraq 3 times. He nearly did not make it out one time except for CPR. He is now a police officer and still giving back to the world.

I have worked in public service for 25 years working with the mentally ill, the poor, and the discounted. I have put my life, my money, and my heart where my money is.

    • Lies and coverups? That sounds like the Obama campaign. You really believe Obama and his buddy Joe "campaign funded by DuPont" Biden are going to do squat about global warming? Oh no, we gave up on global warming a long time ago in this campaign. Yes Bush's plans have been a failure, but I have yet to hear any plans from Obama, good or bad. What is he waiting for?

    • John A and duke49660. It is said that you have bought the hype from the GOP. 99.9% of this financial nightmare we are in is caused by Reagan, Bush, Bush. and global warming? Don't get me started.

De-regulation has caused this greedy nightmare. Lies and coverups have kept the USA from being a leader in fighting global warming.

Every person who votes GOP this fall will be contributing to the demise of the environment and our country's financial future.

Good luck guys you are going to need it.

    • He is still a US Senator. If he has a good idea, he has a duty to present it. Did everyone forget about that? He doesn't have a plan, that is what this means. He wants to play Monday morning quarterback, he wants to criticize everyone elses plans without having the balls to give us one of his own. Just like he did on the gas tax holiday. Oh no, no we can't do that, that's a bad idea. Well then why don't you tell us what your idea is then Mr. Rock Star?

    • Obama has no plan because he has no leadership. He will behind his telepromoter and talk about nothing. He is afraid to take a stand for fear he will be wrong again. What is he afaid of? America is in need of Ideas, a plan and someone with leadship. He is not at the wheel thank you Jesus because we would be watching him dance on Ellen while America's stock market burns to the ground. Take a stand Barry.

    • Better to have someone who actually takes time to think about a situation rather than a hothead who shoots from the hip about serious ideas that affect the entire country.

When you are President, sometimes you have to shoot from the hip. You don't have the luxury of being a Monday morning quarterback when you are President, you have to be the game day quarterback.
