Antidepressants 'may harm sperm'

Image

Drugs taken by millions of men to alleviate depression may affect their fertility, say US scientists.

A small number of healthy men given the antidepressant paroxetine for four weeks had far higher levels of sperm with damaged DNA.

The results, reported in New Scientist magazine, do not necessarily mean these men would have serious problems becoming a father.

However, a UK fertility specialist said they were a "cause for concern".

    • As rachelmaechel says don't do it, there are other ways!

DHEA, DIM, magnesium, tryptophan, fish oil, methyl-folate, just to name a few. Also remove mercury fillings, make sure you don't have sleep apnea, get tested for hidden food allergies Wheat is a big culprit. Get rid of heavy metals in your body with DMSA.

After 18 years of taking effexor after post partum, this has been a long journey of learning and getting better. Never stop any psyche medications suddenly, it can cause permanent damage. See withdrawal and recovery group on yahoo for guidelines if you want to quit these drugs or even if you are depressed, you can get better without big pharma drugs. Absolutely the best information I have found on this topic.

Yea I hear you. Everyone should make their own choice. I tried Prozac too. Hated it. There was something about antidepressants that just made me....numb. I don't know how to explain it. My guitar got dusty, I didn't write or listen to music as much, wasn't interested in new books. I decided that feeling like shit all the time was better than nothing. Which made me determined to conquer my depression. I've been told that it's genetic in my case- as is alcoholism. But in any case I feel fine now. It's been years.

Did you feel weird when you started? They kept telling me that it takes weeks to feel the effects. Months went by and I was not satisfied. If you ever decide to get off...ween yourself. Do not just quit at once. You will loose your mind.

      I like hugs:) thanks.

Im totally fine without the meds. I regret even trying them because I obviously didn't need them. It was a major wake up call for me though. I question doctors all the time now.
Plus there is no way I will ever accept relying on a pill for the rest of my life just to function from day to day. no way. It's not schizophrenia. Depression can be conquered. It's hard and Im really not sure how I did it. I think just having one single positive thing in your life is all you need. One thing. Anything. A person, a pet, anything. For me it was music. Basically saved my life. That's what gets me through.

The human brain is so complex and awesome. It has the ability to make it's own repairs. Sans pharmaceuticals.
You brain seems fine to me with the Prozac, but that doesn't mean you couldn't be better without it.
and big hugs to you. Im appreciating your insight on this!

    • If you are feeling depressed, pharmaceuticals will only add to your problems.
Everyone's brain works differently. How can they mass market a psychoactive chemical and claim that it will fix you. How do they know what my brains reaction will be?

The answer is that BigPharma does not know. So the plan of action that they reccommend is that you 'try' it. And if it doesn't work out you are told to try another antidepressant- and then another and then another. Like the guinea pigs we are.

Don't do it. There are better ways.
