Brooklyn, New York - A paroled ex-con was arrested Thursday for a brutal rape in Brooklyn after he was dimed out by a shoplifter looking for leniency from cops, police sources said.
Detectives had surveillance footage of Ralph Dimassi, 39, dashing from the Bay Ridge building where he allegedly hit his victim with a screwdriver before raping her in the basement on Sept. 17.
But they couldn't identify Dimassi until a routine arrest on Staten Island broke the case.
A man caught shoplifting at a Shop Rite said he had hung out with Dimassi in Dyker Park and that he had confessed to "hurting a girl" in Bay Ridge, police sources said.
The petty thief gave cops a description of the alleged rapist, and cops arrested him at the Brooklyn park, the sources said.
