GTA IV whores: how do you kill yours? Truth: 14-17 yr olds kill them, and is it too graphic?

arcticspirit
Grand Theft Auto, has a long history of mom's saying it's too violent and teens saying they are mature enough to handle it, that it's no different from life, etc. Johny next door plays it, and if I don't, I won't be cool. And besides, where else can I get laid and kill ho's?

Check this clip out. I know it takes a couple minutes.

Anyone else think this is a little too violent? Anyone besides myself know of 14-17 year olds playing this? (I can think of 13 of them off the top of my head. Who's parents purchased the game for them, and they play it. My son is one of them, his dad got the game for him, against my wishes. But what I think doesn't count when it comes to being cool.)

My son brought this to my house and was "killin ho's" laughing and having a good time... I told him he wasn't aloud to kill ho's at my house, he'd have to do that with his father (where he lives). I think I am just not exposed to enough violence to take this as lightly as the typical guy does.

Is it because I'm a chick?
I game. I love killing freaky creatures that put my virtual life in danger, before they kill me. Is there blood? No. Usually a bunch of light and stuff or movement... nothing graphic at all. But if they do kill your character, you do go to the grave yard, and that's no picknick. (see World of Warcraft)

But this whore hunting...? It's haunting. Or is it me?

I realize that it is up to parents to actually set limits on what their kids do. Sadly, few do. And the ones who's parents are get shit from the other kids, because they aren't "cool" or whatever.
So where does common decency and responsibility on behalf of a gaming company begin or end and the sole responsibility of the parents and the teen / peer pressure begin?

Thanks for reading.

    • i consider myself quite liberal. this was kinda hard to watch. the part where shes dogging him in the car-nasty. but then you throw a bomb at her, burn her alive and unload the uzi into her burning body? really? its not about"im not gonna go kill someone now", its totally inhumane. i have a hard time picturing myself playing out that scenario in a game and still holding to the fact that i care about people and anyones death is a tradgedy. "its not real", yes we know. but there are many things that arent real that are not suitable for the human psyche. thats my take anyway. that was disgusting and sad.

You can complete the game without killing or even encountering a prostitute. GTA IV is neat social experiment, why do some people go straight for the whores and then kill them, others get a cop car and hunt down criminals, weird eh?

    • well look how society portrays hookers
the media shows them as low lives, and everyone looks down on them making them the "unclean" of the world
so in the game they do what society wants to do and kill them.

so is it's really the games fault
OR are the children simply acting how they are taught by the other medias around them

    • Teens? Not really. Kids under 13, absolutely too violent. There are some kids out there that are horrifyingly violent (I can think of a few) that video games are like a fire starter for them. They shoot some drug dealers and then they're all fired up after. But I think there are only a small handful of kids that absorb what they watch and play and decide to act upon it in real life. The vast majority of players have enough sense not to go shooting civilians.

    • This game is for adults. Teenagers and kids are going to get their hands on it and play it; does this fact mean that game companies must make no adult titles?

Does the same apply to movies? Books?

    • My question was...
Did anyone else think that was too violent for teens?

Or am I just a sensitive person in particular?

Lots of parents buy this for their kids.
I haven't seen a rash of whore killings. But that doesn't mean that there isn't any damage done to young minds, that isn't readily evident.

    • Ah, the good ol' not scientifically supported "video games make you violent" excuse. Good to see people have learned absolutely nothing. I've played this game, I have not killed anyone. Do you really believe that murders are the people that sit around and play video games? If you honestly believe that VIDEO GAME legislation will prevent VIOLENT CRIME then you need to rethink things. I can name a dozen things that are more important in solving the crime issue. It is unfortunately a LOT easier to just sit around and blame video games.

      Not saying any of that.
Only that kids are being pressured into it young...
And I thought it was really graphic.
      Did you watch the clip?

Was asking if it was because I'm a chick? or what?

    • It's really twisted but GTA is a game that taps into a darker side of people a side where people want to know how to kill, rob, steal etc. and not face any consequences a sort of perverse outlet for male/female aggression.

Teens should definitely not be playing this game but its up to the parents to set the guidelines and restrictions and the video game companies have no responsibility, no matter how much you think they should. They are an industry based on entertainment for money and thrive on calls for censorship. There isn't a lot of social accountability in the corporate world unless sales aren't good.

    • When I played GTA IV I always picked up a prostitute before I would try one of the stunt jumps, it was a weird good luck charm that helped me complete all the stunt jumps.

GTA IV was a blast to play, wouldn't let my kids play it though.

    • Whore killing is a bit much for many I agree, but at the teenage years many playing these games don't really see what they are doing, just enjoying what they're doing. I agree that there should be some form of preventing sales of these games to minors, such as getting a parent to buy it, but it is mostly up to the parents and how they act and react to games and all other forms of potentially offensive media. I personally believe that current movie and game ratings are too strict mostly because I am 14 and at the age where they feel too restricting but I do agree some things should be done.

    • Constant exposure to graphic violence usually breeds desensitization. It makes any common sense gaming regulation nearly impossible.
All we're left with is a lack of outrage which infects every facet of daily life.
Welcome to the age of, "Don't Care".
