A jeering crowd taunted a suicidal teenager as he threatened to jump from the top of a city-centre car park.

In a shocking indictment of modern Britain, youths who gathered in the street below yelled at 17-year-old Shaun Dykes to kill himself over the course of three hours.

One allegedly shouted: 'How far can you bounce?

The A-level student eventually plunged 60ft to his death after police negotiators tried in vain to talk him down.

In a final sickening act, some of those responsible for the abuse outside the Westfield shopping centre in Derby rushed from behind the police cordon to take pictures of the teenager's body on their mobile phones.

Yesterday police branded the mob's behavior at the scene of Saturday's tragedy a 'shocking reflection on society'.

Superintendent Andy Hough, of Derbyshire police, said he was 'disturbed' by some of the comments aimed at the teenager, who is believed to have suffered from depression and also to have been upset at the breakdown of a relationship.

People were at the police cordon shouting for the man to jump,' Superintendent Hough said.

'I find it a disturbing and shocking reflection on society when people feel inclined to do that.

'Negotiators were working with the man threatening to jump and it was their job to talk to him in the hope of changing his mind.

'We really need the public to work with us, not against us. It was a very disappointing situation.'

    • This is truly disgusting. I cannot believe this. Every life has value - we should embrace that more and be nice to people. Try to help people.

    • You all should read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. This story is as if it had been lifted from the pages of this book written almost 100 years ago. It describes a horrific world wherein the Corporation becomes the supreme masters of the world and everyone becomes the property of the corporation, at least their DNA is.

There is a bloody scene in this story that would make your toe nails curl.

    • I don't know what is more disturbing, that the people were fascinated by some kind of blood sport, or that so many people have no regard or compassion for the suffering. So many people have been devoid of their humanity.

    • i wouldn't put so much blame on the people below. yeah, they played a big art in his death, by encouraging him to jump.

but the kid was obviously dealing with a more personal issue. whether the people were there or not, he probably would have jumped anyway.

    • Somehow, I'm not surprised. Youths of our generation have become desensitized to these things.

EDIT: I should've expanded more on that. When I say that I am not suprised, I am by no way condoning what this mob did. Just for clarifacation.

    • I'm sorry Shaun, may your next world be a better one.

To the poster that questioned the police for not getting a net in 3 hours---good question!

The police should have cleared the area of onlookers too.

Shaun hardly had a chance to finish growing. I'm very sorry for his friends and family. I'm sure he will be missed.

    • Those shouting jump should be put in jail for helping in a suicide. They are just as responsible as the person jumping is. How sad it is to think someone wants to see another person die, and then to take pictures.

    • Too sad! For all involved - how tragic that a young man could lose all hope and feel that dying was better than living, and how horrific that those who jeered were so ghoulish - it's almost as if they were dead, in a way, as well. Very sad all the way around.

    • The problem goes further than anything mentioned here.

We are in disgustingly terrible times. The world is at war (EVERYWHERE) and it's driving people nuts.

Weather you know it or not, if you are one of the people actually joking about anything this harsh, you are a victim as well.
I actually feel really bad for people that can even think this way. You might be on that ledge (metaphorically) with that sad kid.

Be careful. Look in the mirror. Don't forget who you are.
Society can rip you apart and turn you into something you're not.

Transcend all this hate, murder, and bloodshed.

Peace and happiness are possible, but only if you want it.

      Turn off your TV.

Remember how to laugh and be happy again.

    • UWAZell, Dmitri_Molotov, edzwa, unphiltered, hotpcts, rainbowryian, and others:

Listen up: when you go to a ball game and you cheer FOR your team, you expect them to do better. That's pretty understandable. It is the soul of encouragement.

And when you shout jeers and cat-calls to the other team, you are expecting them to second-guess themselves -- to lose confidence and make mistakes.

This is simple, practical, common sense psychology. And the crowd effect on the game can be very strong: it's called the 'home advantage,' and only very disciplined teams can overcome it.

So, in a very real way, the crowd shouting below this sad soul did have a very real effect on the outcome.

This is the straightforward answer to those who have tried to absolve themselves from guilt by 'defending' the crowd. Because you are not defending the crowd, you are simply defending your own past actions and decisions. You dehumanize yourself and expose your own lack of values.

    • I haavve seen pictures of the Arab call them extremeists cheering when they have seen the Ameericans being beheaded and dragged through the streets and it made me sick yet we have the same mentality here where the idiots cheer a disturbed person on. Where is the police who are supposed to uphold the law. For someone to be cheering someone on to juimp or commit suicide in any way is criminal and they should be charged with complicity to murder. But this isnt the American way, is it?
Just as I felt when I seen the Arabs celebrating the tortuure and abuse of the dead American, British or any nationality, I feel that the military is justified to drop a concussion bomb right in the middle of them. The world has enough abusive, cruel and insane people and I feel the same about them, no matter what worldly position they have, the civil societies should not tolerate their presence.

    • UWAZell:

If I were suicidal, and thinking about taking my life, having a whole bunch of mean spirited rats urging me to end my life isn't going to help in any way positive. These kids also had a choice to say positive things. To urge him that he's still young and whatever problems he has, he should stick around and try to deal with them. Instead, they chose to antagonize him so they can get great footage of splattered brain. We can agree, he made a choice, as well as those assholes.

    • o god thats horrible!, how can people be so inhuman, i consider the people who told him todo it just as guilty as if he was pushed by someone. Manslaughter? causing someone elses death etc?

if he was that upset as to risk taking his life then he wasnt mentally stable, and he needed support.

no-one deserves to die for the publics amusement, why do you think we dont have public hangings in britain?
anyone on this site who agrees that man deserved to die is sick. and probaly approves of childshootings in schools.

he was 17-year-old! hes a KID you think its funny that a kid died then im disgusted at all of you

    • I really can't believe everyone is still blaming the people below. Yes obviously he's at a point of desperation, we all realize that- he killed himself. What if it was my family member? Hopefully, they would have enough sense to not put themselves in that situation, but I would still expect the same out of the crowd no matter how painful it would be to me personally.

It's this thing that we the public don't see or hear about anymore its called....wait for it... REALITY. Same reason people were taking pics, its real folks. It may piss you off, but those people couldn't pull him off the edge to safety, obviously the Po-lice couldn't either. Don't hear anyone questioning the police's tactics and what they could have done to prevent the tragedy.

But you sure don't hear about any concerned citizens standing up to the encouragers....wait there probably were just as many saying don't jump but that doesn't bring news or give the police a finger to point. Did those naysayers stand up to the proponents? Would you? I doubt many Americans would. What if he hadn't chose to jump but instead to shoot up a school, or a bus stop, would everyone feel the same endearment for his emotional distress?

    • Charge them all....ALL OF THEM.

They can find the people who took photos on their cameras and they can charge them all.

This is like that CSI show (modeled after an actual incident) where they got to a driver that hit someone with his cab and they thought he was driving away (calling dispatch to get 911 on his radio) and they pulled him out and beat him to death.

      They were all charged.

Just like those idiots on that flight that beat a mentally deranged person to death on a flight. Instead of doing the sensible thing of holding the person down they beat him to death. They got away with murder though they tried, in Rolling Stone, to justify their murdering selves.

most of the stuff on CSI is fiction loosly based on true stories.

getting the warrants for an investigation this big would take too long, and it would cost a lots of tax dollars

      the didn't literally push him
so it wouldn't hold in court

in other words that would be a pointless, stressful, and improbable endeavor

Some people feel like their lives are tortured and meaningless and other lives really are.

      It's all about perspective.

The crowd who encouraged him will have to live with that for the rest of their lives.

    • What a crazy reflection of how idiotic some people can be. The poor guy.

I saw this happen once when a guy climbed some scaffolding at Oxford Circus, London's busiest shopping street. The police and ambulance arriving meant lots of buses were held up which messed up a lot of commuters journeys home. Their vented their frustration by shouting up at the guy and calling for him to "hurry up and jump" so they could get home. To be fair, I doubt they actually meant it but still... stupid and insensitive to say the least.

    • what those people did was messed up
      but he wanted to die
so they should just let him die

if there wasn't this pity party crap with suicide attempts them there would be a lot less of them

most of these people just want people to pay attention to them and if we ignore people who try to commit suicide they would (in theory) try other hopefully more healthy ways of getting attention

Oooo. I forgot that was said on Futurama.

Jumping from a building in the daytime is the most ridiculous cry for help. Climb up and jump if life sucks so bad. We don't need your weakness or negativity.

Speaking of Futurama, there very well should be suicide booths. Anyone else agree?

    • Inciting someone to take their own life, knowing full well their state of desperation, is tantamount to causing the death oneself. And to treat such a tragedy as a sensation to record and share is beyond reprehensible. How would they feel if someone they love was killed and other people did the same to them? What a bunch of apathetic lowlifes.

    • How can some of you say it is the jumpers fault and that he should expect that? People who kill themselves are depressed! They have a mental instability. They need help.

When you have reached the point that you think that killing yourself you have lost all hope. You do not feel loved. You feel like your nothing and that no one would miss you.

Publicly trying to kill yourself is a cry for help. Some people are convinced that they will do it but this kid was just unsure, that is why he was up there for so long before he finally did it.

Imagine this: Your mom, dad, sister, brother, spouse, or even your own child was on top that building and they wanted to jump. How would you feel if the crowd below was telling your loved one to jump? Is your loved one a moron for being up there? Would you really think that? Would you stand next to this crowd and tell your loved one to jump?

We are all different and handle stress in different ways. Some people simply can not handle it, life becomes too overwhelming. We should not look down on them, they need help. That crowd provoked him. That is the same as telling a drug addict, “Do it. Take that hit.” Or telling a bulimic, “You are fat. You should keep making yourself puke.” This kid was weak and what he needed was the reassurance that he WAS loved and that people cared about him. Now is that the responsibility of the crowd to do that, no, but it is simple human compassion. I do not want my fellow brethren to feel unloved or unwanted when they are in a time of deep despair.

I guess you may ponder that question for the rest of your life. You may find that you wake up in the wee hours of the morning, and staring at the ceiling, you may ponder questions like that one.

Those questions that by their very nature, forever keep you cut off from the satisfaction of an answer.

I mean seriously, you are threatening to end your life in front of people, do you not expect some of these heartless comments. And don't blame the public for a life altering/ending personal choice, as sick as the public present may have been.

Let me pose this- are you telling me we can catch babies out of 4th and 5th floor burning buildings, but over 3 hours you can't secure some sort of net or cushion below where a person is locked in, secured and threatening to jump?

the only reason someone would tell people they are going to commit suicide is because they need to feel wanted. They think that people hate them, all they need is a few people to tell them they dont need to kill themselves and they wont do it. As far as im concerned the crowd tht shouted at him shouldnt call themselves people. They dont have a heart or a brain.

    • This is not limited to the UK. It has happened right here in America. There is no difference in the make up of people young and old. its the low mentality many youth have. They grow up in an ignorant enviroment and enheirit that characteristic. I have seen people on 42nd Street in NY years ago prompting and provoking someone they did'nt even know, but they were calling for him to jump. So its not new and its everywhere. I think people are basically ignorant and the civilized character is from his growing up in a decent family and enviroment although there are extreme exceptions that too.
