Scientists say pineal gland is an EYE?

''Curiously, this gland is light sensitive and actually has a lens, cornea, and retina.''
Dr. Rick Strassman
''A recent hypothesis proposed by David Klein, head of Neuroendocrinology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), suggests that the Pineal gland has primitive retinas, and that it exercised the dual function of both capturing the image and producing melatonin. He believes that over time this latter function had migrated to the pineal gland, an emancipated organ, while the degeneration of the retina as a product of melatonin in mammals continues without coherent explanation.''
David Klein
For thousands of years, the pineal gland was recognized as the human body’s connection to deeper realms of thought—a window into other dimensions. While this notion has faded with the passing of time, science has begun to focus its efforts toward understanding the secret functions of the “hidden eye.”

what are you people babbling about?
first of all, what type of sensitivity to light (insinuated in original post) does the pineal gland possess? furthermore, what is meant by "light sensitive".
what i've heard, and this comes from human anatomy and neurology, is that there are no rods or cones (photorecptors) in the cellular make-up of the pineal gland. it is true that the pineal gland responds to intensity of light for the purpose of melatonin production. however, the reception of light waves is in the form of neurotransmission and not because the pineal gland is exposed to light through phototransduction by photoreceptor cells. so why would the pineal gland have a lens, retina, or cornea? and where is the proof of its existance? the link provided is full of fanciful nonsense which precisely explains theory without tangible evidence. this is not science fact, its science fantasy. of course these type of opinions, as with others, are in the eye of the beholder (no pun intended). everyone knows that truth is not seeing, it's believing (again, no pun...). although, one thing that you all might want to consider is that perspective validates reality. - 3 years ago

The Pineal Vs. The Amygdila
The Hawk Vs. The SnakeOr is it really Vs.
Can it be and/both rather than either/orThe skeptics are interesting. There worldview is very fixed and scientific. They remind me of the people who must have 'known' the world was flat. But instead of science, they spoke about the church.
Science is our new religion
However science is a false idol and it will fall. Science is a study of matter and space. Sadly matter is what? 1% of the 'known' universe. Seems foolhardy to me.

Articles like this really highlight the disconnect between people not involved with science and the scientific community. Not once is there a real explanation of what they are talking about or a reference to a real paper that supports this theory. However, people love mystical bs and are happy to jump on any "scientific" article that helps support it. Meanwhile they will ignore all other science related items and refuse to challenge themselves to actually read these pseudoscientific articles critically.

Man this took me back to my high school days when I began studying Sufism. One of the Iman's of my masjid back then told me that turning the head side to side during deep breathes while meditating opens the chakra/gland wider. It send this energized like chill through the head...more like a rush but you're still focused in thoughts and visualizations. Shoot I need to start back doing it. Help lower my blood pressure.

1 We are discovering again that we live in a deeply mysterious world, full of sudden coincidences and synchronistic encounters that seem destined.
2 As more of us awaken to this mystery, we will create a completely new worldview - redefining the universe as energetic and sacred.
3 We will discover that everything around us, all matter, consists of and stems from a divine energy that we are beginning to see and understand.
4 From this perspective, we can see that humans have always felt insecure and disconnected from this sacred source, and have tried to take energy by dominating each other. This struggle is responsible for all human conflict.
5 The only solution is to cultivate a personal reconnection with the divine, a mystical transformation that fills us with unlimited energy and love, extends our perception of beauty, and lifts us into a Higher-Self Awareness.
6 In this awareness, we can release our own pattern of controlling, and discover a specific truth, a mission, we are here to share that helps evolve humanity toward this new level of reality.
7 In pursuit of this mission, we can discover an inner intuition that shows us where to go and what to do, and if we make only positive interpretations, brings a flow of coincidences that opens the doors for our mission to unfold.
8 When enough of us enter this evolutionary flow, always giving energy to the higher-self of everyone we meet, we will build a new culture where our bodies evolve to ever higher levels of energy and perception.
9 In this way, we participate in the long journey of evolution from the Big Bang to life's ultimate goal: to energize our bodies, generation by generation, until we walk into a heaven we can finally see.

This book and film I believe are talking about the development of the third eye to be able to see the heaven that is already here, surrounding us. We can cross over to that parallel world, but we must first believe it is there and experience the insights, personally. Our vision will change and we will be able to see the intense beauty and Shekinah light or halo of energy that surrounds all living things; wholly interconnected.

As this Current.com is just an itty bitty slice of our culture I think it is refreshing to see that over the past 2 years the interest has shifted away from celebrity and trivial horse shit to posts like this and aliens and big bang/bounce, etc. You can sit back and watch people moving into a more creative and curious space. This gives me hope that the old powers of Greed and Want will fizzle away from lack of charm to our fragile ego. Is it that these things being talked about, in a pop culture window such as this, a hint of a greater awakening? A great turning? Will we kick ourselves in the teeth just one more time before we get there? What up?

Kudos to Dr. Strassman for more pioneering research into the truths of spirituality and the soul, and for finding a way to prove this sort of thing, because our culture loves to mock religious superstition until, like so many other ancient "secrets," it gets recognized by scientists as a quite reasonable plausibility. _________The Pineal Gland Is The First Eye_______
The indigenous refer to this ship as Nibiru. I was told by one of my teachers last week, that it would be visible later on this month.I was also told that it would appear in the southwest portion of the sky at night time, as the brightest star in the sky. The ship is still 5,000 light years away from the planet earth, but the mass of this ship is close t the size of Jupiter, so it will not enter into our solar system until December 12th, 2012. At that time, it will sit outside of Saturns orbit, because the Earth would be destroyed by it's own gravitational pull. Also, there will be smallers ships that will enter into our atmosphere's space to do whatever needs to be done to restore peace on the planet. Having said that, I truly believe that the vision next week will be somewhat of a spiritual healing for some, and a final warning for others.
We are truly living in the most cataclysmic days of mankind. The party is over, and it frieghtens the hell out of me that some people still do not believe. The earth has been sending out distress signals to the universe for quite some time now, and her cry has been heard. Help is on the way. It is no different than one of us going to the doctor to rid ourselves of disease and pain. How long did man believe that he could continue to pollute the air, destroy the ozone, dump toxic waste into the oceans, and enslave the poor, and not expect reprisal from the gaurdians of the universe ?
I rejoice and quiver at the same time. I just hope that they find my heart be in the right place upon their arrival. This is the sole purpose for the opening and the activating of our pineal gland. THE PINEAL GLAND IS OUR CONNECTION TO THE UNIVERSE.

More on Jeremy Narby's book (click on the link).
Excerpt:
The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby takes a serious look at how neurogenetic consciousness informs awareness, knowledge, symbolism and culture. His comparison of the ancient cosmic serpent myths to the genetic situation in every living cell reveals the immortal biomolecular wizard behind the curtain of everyday life. His anthropological study, ayahuasca experience and scientific speculations weave a tale of shamans who bring their consciousness down to molecular levels with sophisticated neurotransmitter potions in order to perceive information contained in the coherent visible light emitted by DNA.

I felt my first spiritual experience during mediation. I dont necessarily mean a god overtook me. I just felt one with myself and what was around me. I lost myself in the few minutes that I could hold onto it I guess.
We had just finished a long yoga practice and we would lay in savasana for a while afterward - "the counter pose of every pose" and I looked for my "place" and I found it.
I dont really know how to describe it but I know it was amazing and the next thing I know was my instructor was brushing at various chakras when i woke up.

Is Salvia a Miracle Drug?
Some researchers argue against criminalizing the psychedelic, saying that it could help treat various ailments, including cancer, HIV, and addiction. Many parents and legislators view the popular psychedelic Salvia divinorum as a public health menace. But the drug has an unlikely set of supporters: scientists. Many medical researchers view the plant as a potential medical marvel. They believe that rigorous scientific study of salvia could lead to medical breakthroughs yielding new treatments for addiction, depression, cancer, and even HIV.
If lawmakers criminalize salvia at the state or federal level, the ban could cripple salvia research in this country before it has a chance to make any headway, says Dr. John Mendelson, a pharmacologist. With federal financing, Mendelson is studying the impact of salvia on humans at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute.
Packaging label for commercially available Salvia divinorum. At this writing, salvia is legal to buy, sell, and use in most parts of the United States. However, 13 states have adopted legislation banning or otherwise regulating its use; and legislators in a number of other states, as well as federal officials, are considering regulating the drug.
"Salvia is a totally unique compound, unlike opioids and other hallucinogens," Mendelson says. "We've never seen anything like it before."

Meditation is the key to opening the Third eye... Active meditation such as employing vibratory mantras and visualization techniques.... Sound, Vibration at certain Frequencies combined with visualized colors and geometric patterns will stimulate the third eye..... I can testify to this I have experienced results..... well, yes vierotchka the kundalini if awakened in an unprepared novitiate can have negative consequences, but it isn't as dangerous as you say it is. Such a spiritual venture should be overseen by an experienced individual , but I assure you, it is not necessary, I can testify to that. Their is no guaranteed method to activate it, it is a spontaneous awakening in and of itself. Although there are spiritual prerequisite requirements so to speak. The activation of all the chakras is essential among other requirements. Overall, one should have a healthy and consistent meditation history and habit. The spirit body and mind must be functioning harmoniously, and if this is so, the n anyone attempting this undertaking should have no worries. :) Oh good intentions are very important too :)

Third Eye Chakra
AjnaAjna (along with Bindu, either or both are considered to correspond to the third eye)
is linked to the pineal gland which may inform a model of its envisioning. Ajna is held as the chakra of time, awareness and of light. The pineal gland is a light sensitive gland that produces the hormone melatonin which regulates sleep and awakening. Symbolised by a lotus with two petals. (Note: some opine that the pineal and pituitary glands should be exchanged in their relationship to the Crown and Brow chakras, based on the description in Arthur Avalon's book on kundalini called Serpent Power or empirical research.)More at link.

The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the brain. It is located near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres, close to the emotional centers.
# René Descartes, French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. Dubbed the "Founder of Modern Philosophy" and the "Father of Modern Mathematics and Science," called it the seat of the soul.
# It is associated with the sixth chakra, the Ajna chakra or third eye. It is believed by some to be a dormant organ that can be awakened to enable "telepathic" communication.
# The Pineal Gland produces a chemical called DMT, N,N-dimethyltryptamine an extremely short-acting but very powerful psychedelic.
# Dr Rick Strassman, who in his research gave sixty volunteers nearly 400 doses of DMT, speculated about endogenous DMT's role in dreams, meditation & spiritual experiences, birth, alien entity contact, near-death & death experiences in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule.
# The research by dr Rick Strassman showed it could very well be the entry and exit to this and other worlds, aswell as the collective unconscious.(more at link)
