Pepper spray for taxi drivers?

Image

Taxi drivers in Belfast are campaigning to be allowed to carry pepper spray in order to be able to defend themselves against violent passengers.

Drivers claim that they are being assaulted by passengers more and more often and state that sometimes knives and guns are involved. Therefore, they are calling for drastic action to reduce the number of attacks on drivers and have asked for tougher laws to punish violent passengers.

Do you think taxi drivers should be allowed to carry pepper spray to defend themselves or would it make you feel uneasy when entering a taxi?

    • Taxi drivers around the world are being attacked - we shot a film called King Lear of the Taxi after talks with a famous poet who drives yellow cabs in NYC - the video was posted on youtube and blogged by cabbies as far away as OZ. They need more help - just search google under the terms "taxi driver assulted/murdered".

Seriously though one major problem with late night revelry in the UK is the lack of public conveniences. Now in France they have vandal proof pissoirs, often just a snail shaped wall of 12mm thick steel plate with a drain. In the UK it is illegal to urinate in the street so what do the yobs do? - they use the nearest shop doorway or letterbox! Unfortunately the dopes who run this apology for a country have not yet twigged it that 24 hour drinking requires 24 hour toilets. Duh - you just can't get the right MPs and councillors! Getting back to the taxi problem, many now have multi-channel CCTV to provide evidence of bad behaviour. According to a scouser that I worked with years ago "The taxis in Liverpool are really bad as if you are sick in the back its £5 extra!" Its a rough trade!

    • Individual cases of wrong doing are always more difficult look at. Taxi-drivers will have a rough time, taking home drunks after a rowdy night out. Is it fair that to earn a living they have to threaten their own (and others possibly) safety....................pepper spray is not the answer..........

    • I think pepper spraying taxi drivers could be a jolly good thing as one ran into the back of my car then swore blind that I reversed into him deliberately. In court the taxi driver and his barrister managed to blackmail the judge. This was done by pointing out that he was a family man with young children (so what's that got to do with running into my car?) His barrister then asked "What will happen to you if you lose this case?" He replied "My insurance premiums will go up and I might not be able to work". Get it? - he's making a thinly veiled threat to the judge that if the case goes against him he'll be claiming the dole for all his kith and kin. Never got a penny in compensation, the law is an ass. Could be one for the ECHR as the term "British Justice" is an oxymoron.
