AMY GOODMAN: In a barely noticed development last week, the Army stationed an active unit inside the United States. The Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Team is back from Iraq, now training for domestic operations under the control of US Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. The unit will serve as an on-call federal response for large-scale emergencies and disasters. It’s being called the Consequence Management Response Force, CCMRF, or “sea-smurf” for short. It’s the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to USNORTHCOM, which was itself formed in October 2002 to “provide command and control of Department of Defense homeland defense efforts.” An initial news report in the Army Times newspaper last month noted, in addition to emergency response, the force “may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control.” The Army Times has since appended a clarification, and a September 30th press release from the Northern Command states: “This response force will not be called upon to help with law enforcement, civil disturbance or crowd control."When Democracy Now! spoke to Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Goodpaster, a public affairs officer for NORTHCOM, she said the force would have weapons stored in containers on site, as well as access to tanks, but the decision to use weapons would be made at a far higher level, perhaps by Secretary of Defense, SECDEF.
Well, I’m joined now by two guests. Army Colonel Michael Boatner is future operations division chief of USNORTHCOM. He joins me on the phone from Colorado Springs. We’re also joined from Madison, Wisconsin by journalist and editor of The Progressive magazine, Matthew Rothschild.
We welcome you both to Democracy Now! Why don’t we begin with Colonel Michael Boatner? Can you explain the significance, the first time, October 1st, deployment of the troops just back from Iraq?

U.S. troops deployed against U.S. civilians I believe the desertion rate of this brigade will be very high. And I would welcome them into the new movement. I would also pity the ones that stayed on, for their fate is a real unknown.

It is obvious you have never served in any branch of the U.S. military. If you had, then you would know without a doubt that desertion (especially mass desertion) would not be a problem. Deserters lose all of their military benefits (benefits usually being the primary reason they joined) and face serious prison time in military prisons. Furthermore, the Army times did print a clarification saying they would not assume the duties of local law enforcement.
Keep in mind that our entire National Guard's primary mission encompases the same speculated mission of this new active duty Army unit, and that theoretically our National Guard has been misused by deploying them to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Furthermore, a battalion from the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Infantry Division was deployed to New Orleans following the aftermath of hurricane Katrina to keep peace amid reports of mass looting and shootings. They patroled the streets for months with loaded assault rifles and machine guns with no incidents of civilian casualties. As a matter of fact, they were actually thanked by the remaining citizens for keeping them safe as they patrolled the streets.

Naw dude, I am going to school with a folks in the Military, and I've talked with them about this stuff, and they say that if it comes down to this, they swore an oath to uphold the constitution, and they're "going to tell their commanding officers to eat shit and die."

Laugh Out Loud @ the "benefits" comment...
The last thing anyone is going to be worried about is "benefits" by the time all of this plays out...
We will be living in a police state under the oppressing hand of a military dictatorship. What are the "benefits" of that?
In other words, a wolf is willing to chew off a leg to save her own life.

I wonder whether the new president will follow the laws any more than the current one.

I'll side with Rachel Maddow's take on this when she asked why the US Army is doing what our government is supposed to be doing in regards to coming to public aid.
Example: FEMA.
It begs the question, what is really going on here? - 4 years ago

Care to explain why there is at least one prison camp in every state?

Why all of the sudden does posse comitatus need to be abolished for a "WMD-like event"?
Do you know something that the rest of us don't?
and then you completely flip the script and mention a "prison camp in every state"...
do you have any idea where you are going with these statements?
that is some convoluted thinking.
you're statement / question doesn't make sense to me...
try again?
and please choose your words more carefully.

Posse Comitatus has been suspended along with habeas corpus long ago by Bush. FEMA has built prison camps in every state. It has been discussed several times here and elsewhere on the Internet. Go look it up on You Tube for one. Your guess is as good as mine as to why we need them. I'm guessing they are for dissenters. Actually I made a mistake my response was to seeker561. Apology.
