A new study concludes that the economic crisis is having devastating effects on some New Yorkers, especially children. The report, titled "Child Hunger: The Unhealthy Return On Missed Investments," was released by the Food Bank and found that one of every five children in New York City (50 percent higher than the national average) lives in poverty and that one of every four children requires assistance from emergency food programs. The Food Bank reports that it helped feed 397,000 New York families in 2007, a 48 percent increase from 2004.http://www.foodbanknyc.org/

I totally agree with what the first prsn said about the religious life caring about life UNTIL it's born so true. But I also think actually pretty much no that if the kids r starving it has to be the parents or guardians fault. I mean I work in NYC schools every day these kids get free breakfast , lunch, some get dinner being that they're in after school programs till 7 or 8 at night. And the parents usually both of them don't even work! Free daycare I guess Also they don't get alot of money on welfare but u do get alot of WIC foodstamps. There are ALOT of fat kids also 80% of them bring lunch as well as get free lunch and breakfast and snacks How much does a kid need to eat that's y we have a country of fat bastards! Starving oh please bring out the violins!

this issue should of been top on the politicians agenda. I know Obama has been speaking about it but it should be the top issue not down around number 23. Does it break my heart to hear about the starving children in Africa, sure it does but I see the starving children here in my own neighborhood. The politicians think because we own our own homes that things are fine and dandy. But then its hard to keep track of expenses when you own 10 or 11 homes. I remember when the milk industry use to pour gallons of milk down the drain to keep the price of milk stable. Do we still burn the excess wheat? We are going to have riots in the streets but not the race riots they were predicting, the riots are going to be thrown by the working class and poor united against the rich and greedy. And that includes against the rich model, singer, actor who come out once in awhile sing a couple songs then go back and burn money on $300 jeans. we should start a quiet revolution by stop buying the name brand products made by cheap labor and sold for outrageous prices, buy local and stop supporting companies that over pay their officers. As to the starving children in NY, what is going to happen to them this winter when there is no heat. If you can't afford food you won't be able to pay the heating bill.

We are at some sort of brink. There is no upside to any thing that has come out of the last 8 years.
No matter what, it will take great effort on the part of you and me --- the little guys and gals, to make the nation strong again.
I would hope that we can do this without riots, civil war or revolution. (or armageddon)
The future will tell.

In my town the food bank is handing out so much food, it is running short. they use to give two bags to each person now its down to one. each day more and more families are depending on aid from the food banks to feed their children. these are not people who are lazy, these are people who jobs are gone to cheap overseas labor. foreclosures of homes over 50%, when will it end?we pay farmers not to grow and children go hungry. Does that make sense? Do the politicians care?At election time and then the people are forgotten. We need a people revolution in this country now more than ever. Where are the Robin Hood's when you need them?

They are in there living rooms scared shitless that if they do something, they will be place on the terror watch list, or even worse, sent to GTMO never to be heard of again.
Really, the most powerful thing Robin Hood had going for him was public approval, and sense the media controls that nowadays...

Don't get worked up. According to the New York Times titled "Child Obesity Picture Grim Among New York City Poor":
"Then, by the age of 2, there is a one-in-four chance that the child will be obese — at least if he or she lives in New York City and is from a low-income family, according to a survey of preschool children released yesterday by the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
" The results of the study paint a picture that is even grimmer than health officials had expected, with rates of obesity more than double the national average. The data comes from the most recent records of 16,000 children involved in the federal Head Start program, which serves preschool children and families living below the poverty line."
The City of New York also wrote an article titled : "Department of Education Strikes Out on School Sports as Childhood Obesity Rate Soars "
There are way too many obese children these days and I find it hard to believe they go hungry. Not as a whole mind you but 25%?
Now if we are talking poverty? That I can believe whole heartedly.
"Your contradicting yourself!!!!" No Im not. I lived in squaller as a child on a backwoods indian rez and we had 3 square meals a day. We even had snacks that my 2 brothers and I paid for ourselves collecting aluminum cans. If these poor children are going unfed, lets look at the story behind the parents. I'll bet some of those parents are eating better than their children which should be criminal!!! - 4 years ago

i love this country. the rich white folks get anything and everything they want while everyone else struggles to survive. the upper class doesn't give a damn about anyone but themsleves. sure, they preach about change and equality, but when it comes down to it, they look out for themselves and themselves alone.

And what's there excuse? "I worked hard for this money"
When other homeless families don't even have the opportunity to work hard. In a world where you need experience to get experience it's almost impossible to get a job.
It's like asking what came first, the chicken or the egg?

I love living in a country where one end of the spectrum you have people buying $9,000 sunglasses and the other end you have whole familes starving and resorting to desperate measures just to survive....

strip away the golden spoons, the heavy wallets, the barrels of lies and all you've got are some sorry sob's running a country that should be "greatest" in the world. Greatest because people from other countries can come in and get the golden spoon, heavy wallet, and dish out barrells of lies without having to do a thing...just show up and you get a hand out. But if you are a true American, you better have a rich uncle somehwere to hold you up when times are bad, your state nor the fed government could give 2 cents whether you have a home or food. Help the needy? We are all needy when the people holding all the food won't share with us commoners.

This film brings me to tears - I am so appreciative goldenways! Although the tragedy of hunger and isolation in our societies' most defenseless and fragile populations - children and the elderly is epidemic, and must be dealt with, this film gives me such a feeling of hope and encouragement. The people who work in and support these facilities are the true heroes of our day. This film is wonderful - thank you - I needed that!

This is a national tragedy and a national disgrace.
I grew up hungry due to poverty and parental neglect and I can tell you it affected how I did in school and my outlook on life. Somehow I managed to find my way to college after many years of struggle.
No child should be without food, housing, medical care, or parental care.

A war on hunger would mean a war against affluence and control, because having the masses healthy and educated is bad for business. And we all know how hard these politicians have fought to protect their investments.
What we need is a revolution, because name changes in Washington won't foster the change we truly need.

We are the ONLY developed country where such extreme levels of poverty, hunger, lack of medical care and educational opportunity occurs among children. It is a MORAL OUTRAGE. Notice that the same folks who promote sexual abstinence, prohibit sexual education, prohibit birth control, prohibit abortion, prohibit stem cell research -- ALL under the guise of valuing "life" -- are THE SAME folks who promote the "war on terror," promote the war in Iraq, promote the war in Afghanistan, promote free-market capitalist responses to poverty, and prohibit universal healthcare. Life is precious until it's born. Morally bankrupt rightists.....
