PETA publicly denounces Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino because he likes to eat Spam

Honestly, does PETA have anything better to do than publicly go after a baseball player that they clearly never heard of before the NLCS was aired on FOX because his player bio says he likes to eat Spam?

      If you or I was in the position of all these defenseless, innocent animals then we would be hoping and praying that there were caring souls on the outside trying to free us. Thank your lucky stars there are people out there as passionate and persistent as PeTA.

      You obviously have never been locked in cage with no hope except someone on the outside.

      Marginalizing people who fight for the rights of others with no self interest in mind is nothing to joke about.

      The way animals are treated is not a funny thing.

      I admire anyone who will put their ass on the line to do something about this constant injustice.

      Animals are sentient beings that feel pain, form relationships and familial bonds, and suffer daily at the hands of meat producers. Human embryos cannot feel pain, and fetuses don't feel pain until the third trimester, by which point abortion is illegal.

      Reproductive rights activists are voices for thousands of voiceless teenaged and abused women who would be forced to bear unwanted children by the Christian right.

      Being a voice for the voiceless is the most noble of actions.

      Animals are innocent and righteous and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect...

      I completely support any one or organization that is furthering the cause of total liberation for animals.

      I don't see how anyone could visit this thread and leave one of these little jokes.

    • I don’t see what’s so controversial about PETA's actions in this particular instance. In fact, it doesn’t even appear that they “publicly denounced” him, as kozeki’s choice of headline would have us believe. Read the article at the link. They sent him a letter informing him of the cruelty that occurs at Hormel, saying, “We suspect that the cruelty in every can of Spam will infuriate Shane more than a high Hiroki Kuroda fastball.” They were trying to encourage him to change his habit of eating Spam, and trying to create some attention around the cruelty at Hormel at the same time. They were trying to get him on their side, not publicly denouncing him. Yet bloggers and other media sources reporting on the story claim that he drew PETA’s “ire,” making it sound like PETA has attacked him for eating Spam. Seems like PETA is the group everyone loves to hate, even when they haven't done anything hateful.

      For the record, here's what PETA found in their investigation of Hormel, the makers of Spam:

      PETA recently conducted an undercover investigation on a factory farm that breeds pigs who are slaughtered for Hormel, the maker of Spam. PETA documented staggering cruelty to animals, including that a supervisor shoved a cane into a sow's vagina and struck her on the back approximately 17 times. Multiple pigs were beaten with metal gate rods, and two men were witnessed jabbing clothespins into pigs' eyes and faces. A supervisor kicked a young pig in the face, abdomen, and genitals to make her move and told PETA's investigator, "You gotta beat on the bitch. Make her cry."
