Titanic survivor can't pay for nursing home

The last remaining survivor of the Titanic disaster is auctioning mementoes from the doomed liner to pay for her nursing home fees.

Millvina Dean was only two months old when the Titanic struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank in 1912, but now at the age of 96 she is struggling to make ends meet and hopes to make 3,000 pounds (3,845 euros, 5,171 dollars) from the sale.

Personal items include a 100-year-old suitcase filled with clothes given to her family by the people of New York after they arrived there following the catastrophe.

Dean has lived in a nursing home for the last two years in London.

"I am selling it all now because I have to pay these nursing home fees and am selling anything that I think might fetch some money," she added. "The fees are quite expensive. The more money I can get from the auction the better."

    • she should be treated with respect just like every elderly person. my great grandmother is the same age and if i heard people talking like this about her i'd go on a rampage. you guys are so insensitive.

    • lets do some math. 96 + 1912 = 2008. so she was under a yr old? whatevs lady, you couldn't even talk when he ship sank, so you're not even a little bit 'scarred' by the image of this historical event. and therefore, you're just like any other poor old person.

      Therefore you are just like any other old person? What is your problem with elderly people ? If you really have problem with the elderly, try fixing the problem by offing yourself ASAP. That way you will not have to worry about people going out of their way to take care of you.

    • Alas, many elderly facing the same unfortunate situation don't have museum-worthy mementos to sell. My heart goes out to her all the same. It's one of too many stories, I'm afraid.

    • Did she expect to take all her STUFF to the grave with her. Give me a break. The best way to enter the grave is with your last earthly item of value paying for your funeral.

    • The title is misleading. Nursing fees are different from health care.

      Overall, this sucks for her. I hope she gets a large donation so that she doesn't have to sell her momentos.

      Atleast your heart is un the right place.Money is important, but it is not always the answer.There are those of us that truly believe that moral hearts and a higher consciousness will actually alter the vibration fields on this planet. Right now that over 85% of the earth and her inhabitants are dissatified.Whenever this happens, nature produces its own change.No matter the odds, always defend truth and honor, like you are doing right now. The blessed old woman cannot defend herself at this time in her life.
