Forrest Hylton: Neither McCain nor Obama really know what 's happening in South America.

In the third and last presidential debate Senator John McCain defended a free trade agreement between Colombia and the US as a "no brainer" and once again derided Senator Obama for never having travelled south of the border. Obama, to McCain's amazement, actually showed he knew one or two things about the situation on the ground. But journalist and author Forrest Hylton, an expert on Colombia and Bolivia, argues neither candidate is really aware of crucial political, economic and social processes developing in South America for a few years now, and he is pessimistic on the US under a new presidency making up for lost time.

Forrest Hylton is the the author of Evil Hour in Colombia (Verso, 2006), and with Sinclair Thomson, co-author of Revolutionary Horizons: Past and Present in Bolivian Politics (Verso, 2007). He is a regular contributor to New Left Review and NACLA Report on the Americas.

    • Since when do we have an "obligation" to go in and fix South America's social issues?

So I guess the trade embargo with Cuba is ok, too?

    • Obama has to get in before he can talk to the socialist leaders. With todays media, any association with these leaders is political suicide this close to the election. Obama is the far better choice because we do not know for sure what he will do.

    • This is from the page of Buy USA http://www.buyusa.gov/sacramento/colombiatariffticker.html

"Today, more than 90 percent of Colombian products enter the United States duty free, as they have for more than 16 years with strong Congressional support. The “Colombia Tariff Ticker” highlights the unfair playing field on which American exporters currently operate, and likewise the money they could save if Congress approves the U.S.-Colombia TPA. "

The GP of the US in 2006 was 14 trillion Dllrs
The GDP of Colombia in 2006 was $374.4 billion

    • ...if you want to know what is happening in Colombia....the world....and the Universe....you could ask the Kogi of Colombia....they are being held captive by Cocaine traffickers that control the lowlands and cut them off from their salt supply....the Kogi chew the leaves just like many have done for thousands of years to deal with the altitude....next time you snort a line off a mirror....look close....you can see them crying.....and yourself dying....Golden Ruler...Johnnie Hargrave.......

      The Kogi

Not a very good visual quality, but very interesting nonetheless. I first heard about them about fifteen or twenty years ago through a French documentary about this amazing people.

    • Well well, what else is new. I will post what I posted couple of days ago:

McCain was in Cartagena, Colombia for 36 Hrs that does not warrant knowledge of the situation in that Country (which BTW I know very well) The famous treaty is a massive amount of nothing that will destroy the farmers in Colombia and erase all intellectual property. Colombia right now has trade advantages and its exports enjoy almost tariff free exceptions thanks to the plan Colombia. Its exceptions are so advantageous that impresarios from other countries such as Ecuador and Venezuela, set bases in Colombia so they can too export their products under this agreement.

The main reason of the treaty is to set a strong military presence there and continue with the profitable war on drugs.

      McCain is a Clown

I will ad to this that I also have been listening to Obama demonizing Venezuela, I hope really that he is only playing the demagogic card for those extreme right warmongers. Right on the money Viero.

    • Great post Vierotchka

I can guarantee you the CIA is behind every single one of those assassinations. Columbia is strategic to the US foreign policy of exploit the many for the few, and Obama nailed that one. This is just more exploitation of humanity for the benefit of giant global corporations.

The US has been working overtime to discredit Chavez, and he has had a bulls-eye on his back for a long time. You can't even trust reports coming from organizations that are supposedly pro human rights...the US sponsored corruption runs deep and wide. If you haven't already read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, you will find it interesting, particularly on the history of US interventions in this part of the world.

    • The only wrong Policy from Obama is his eagerness to stop Free Trade agreements with countries like Colombia. He is looking for better "Human Rights" in order to enable the Free Trade. How can there be any human rights with no Money?
