New Delhi - An 11-year-old girl was set on fire by a relative in India's northern city of Jaipur for wearing lipstick and being "inappropriately dressed," media reports said Saturday. The girl suffered burns over 90 per cent of her body. Her chances of survival were bleak, police officers told the NDTV network.
Police arrested her great uncle, who allegedly poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze Friday.
Investigators told the PTI news agency that the 55-year-old man, a conservative Muslim, had told the police that he was enraged at the girl wearing lipstick and being "scantily dressed."
Among conservative Muslim communities, women are required to observe hijab, which means wearing clothing that covers the head and the body.
But relatives told news channels that the man had tried to molest the girl and had set her on fire when she objected.
Neighbours came to her rescue, one of whom was also injured while trying to put out the flames, police said.
A case of attempted murder was registered against the accused. Police are continuing investigations.

this is awful. eleven years old? Ok, if you think its inappropriate, tell her off or something. Incidents like this are far too frequent and they breed further alienations between the religions.

Yes, I have to agree. Isn't this the country who freaked out when Richard Geer gave that bollywood actress a kiss at an anti aids benefit and people wanted him hanged and her burned?

I don't understand why TeamBoo thought that the headline was inflamatory about Islam. India isn't instantly recognised as a Muslim country - with only approx 13% of the population practising the religion.
A terrible story though, for whatever reason, this young girl has been horrendously treated if not murdered.

First of all... i did not write the title or have anything to do with the content of this story. I also dont know how anyone could think i thought the title was inflamatory? Against Islam? How the shit...do you see that? I gave no personal views, just a warning about the video. I am wicked confused.

The hijab is just a scarf, it doesn't cover the head and the body. The burqa covers the head and the body.

My God, she has no chance of recovering in such unhygienic conditions - people with such extensive burns must be kept isolated from germs, visitors have to wear sterile face-masks, hair caps, full gowns, gloves, and shoe covers, and are not allowed to touch the patients.

there was hate.. but she was more scared..
. i mean the ... when you say "hang him" in hindi, it's the same thing as when people say "give him capital". we know what they're going to do but we choose a not-so-evil terminology to say it..
it might not be easy to understand..but i would be pissed off too... cuz.. i just got molested (alegeddly) and then burnt with kerosene.. and then shown to the world as a messed up little child.. it's something no one gets over..

The headline "Girl in India set ablaze for wearing lipstick" fits much closer to the hysteria of a growing extremist Muslim movement than "Man sets girl on fire after molesting her" and so it is chosen as the focus of the story.
Whatever happened, it is obviously a tragic and sick event, but when there are contrasting reports on how the event took place it is easy to see why news outlets chose a focus which fits closer to a global narrative - the extremist Muslim one. More hits, more recognition, more ratings, increased brand awareness.
Sensationalism at its finest.

Actually, India isn't a very Muslim country. It's Pakistan that's pretty much entirely Muslim, whereas India is.. (quick google) 13.4%.
If this fits into the category of anti- Muslim propaganda, then it's simply because the audience isn't well enough informed. - 3 years ago
