Now, however, researchers have found equipment used to prepare hallucinogenic drugs for sniffing, and dated them back to prehistoric South American tribes.
Quetta Kaye, of University College London, and Scott Fitzpatrick, an archeologist from North Carolina State University, made the breakthrough on the Caribbean island of Carriacou.
They found ceramic bowls, as well as tubes for inhaling drug fumes or powders, which appear to have originated in South America between 100BC and 400BC and were then carried 400 miles to the islands.
While the use of such paraphernalia for inhaling drugs is well-known, the age of the bowls has thrown new light on how long humans have been taking drugs.
Scientists believe that the drug being used was cohoba, a hallucinogen made from the beans of a mimosa species. Drugs such as cannabis were not found in the Caribbean then.
Opiates can be obtained from species such as poppies, while fungi, which was widespread, may also have been used.
Archeologists have suggested that humans were extracting mind-expanding drugs from mescal beans and peyote cacti as far back as 5,000 years ago, but have not found direct evidence that this is true.
They consider that drugs were being used to induce spiritual or trance-like states by people who had religious beliefs.

The earliest RECORDED drug use was by the Babyonians, anyone who assumes they were the first to use has their head up their rear. Even in ancient Babylon, the knowlege of botanical psychotropics had thousands of years of cumulatve knowlege behind it. Just by random foraging and gathering most "mind altering" plants and fungi were dicovered, never mind all the shamans and medicine men. The modern pharmacopia incorporates parts and keytones of many of the active chemicals in these now illegal plants.
Examles? Marijuana(Marinol) Opium(Morphine, Fetanyl, Hydrocodone, OxyContin etc)Numerous Cancer, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure(many derived from endangered rain forest plants), even tobacco has herbal applications(I could list some herbs but i think you get my point.). - 3 years ago

I agree, although i personally use cannabis to expand my mindset and opinions. It is also a great emotional release and gives me a very content feeling. Cannabis is a great way to see everything from a different angle and after i have consumed it, i use it to think about things and it honestly helps me understand things formerly uncompriendable. The reason behind this is because when you are using cannabis, you "unlock" the use of many parts of your brain that you can't tap into otherwise. I also use it to achieve a spiritual experience and a spiritual connection both to our ancestors and to the earth. I don't know if youve ever experienced being on cannabis, but this is a widespread feeling that most of the users i've spoken to have experienced. These natural therapeutic substances (drugs) that have been derived directly from a plant and haven't been altered are almost never harmful. Modern humans have been looking for an effective way to treat and soothe the human brain for a long time, when in fact the answer has been growing in our backyards the whole time. Recognize

some drugs are horrible, like heroin, but the psychedelic natural drugs have been part of human nature since the beginning. they must of had a part in making the mayans so advanced for their time. artists, musicians, scientists, philosophers, some of the most influential people in history have used drugs. maybe they could even help us figure out how to get out of this mess we've gotten into

Man, these dudes had it down, low-impact sustainable farming, living in harmony with nature, close community groups, naked to little clothing, and free to do whatever drugs they pleased. Modern man has made things too simple to the point that it's caged us.

religion wasn't necessarily an excuse to continue doing more. buddhist monks describe a sensation very similar to acid (LSD) when describing their own out of body experiences. To reach this state, however, it takes extensive training and years to perfect. Many will never reach the state of enlightement that many religious individuals strive for. Tim Leary's idea was to help aid those seeking a heightened spiritual experience. People wanted to see god. Or their own god. When LSD was first produced it wasn't around to get people "effed up." It had a purpose. I'm not playing an advocate for it. At ALL. But I can say with confidence there was probably a lot of spiritual (id actually rather not say religious as I feel that implies a certain sense of organized and forced belief) reasoning behind the origin of drug use. We just have a very tainted view now due to its over-use and abuse.
Heck, even in colonial times it was mandatory for many to own hemp (marijuana) plants since they grew so fast and provided so many valuable resources.

I think that ull find that they used to take the drugs to get high and religious reason was just an excuse to do more... and i think ull find most drugs are natural the only one that isnt is extasy and and acid which are both made from natural substances... they are only made illegal by law most are natural and the reason they werent illegal then was because there were no laws

This is not surprising. At least the purpose of their drug use was for spiritual and religious reasons rather than to ‘get high’ and the substances that they used were all natural rather than illegal!

Mes is right. Skyla, you have grouped all drugs into a corner. "unnatural & illegal" as mes pointed out. The fact is many of todays popular recreational drugs are very natural. The fungi they mention in this article are probably the same, if not closely related, to the same ones kids today use for psychedelic experiences. How can you point a finger at marijuana and say it is not natural. Not only are the buds that many smoke natural but the hemp from the plant is an all natural way of creating textile material. Cocain, as addictive and dangerous as it is - is alkaloid found in the leaves of the coca plant. (mind you im not saying that some drugs are not dangerous and addictive and I am not denying the creation of man made drugs)
I'll go a step further though. I'm not saying this merely to you, please don't take it the wrong way. Its just there is a large miscomprehension about drug use. Yes, mostly because it has been so badly abused... but also because of the anti-drug campaigns of the past. Why do you assume drugs today aren't used in any form for religious purposes? They are widely used for that reason and in the 60s/70s, where many believe Hippies used the drugs as a recreational tool, many, such as Timothy Leary, were attempting to acheive a higher state of mind - namely similar to the experiences that monks describe from meditation and their own religious followings. Out of Body experiences if you will. Leary also created a spiritual organization known as the League of Spiritual Discovery (which disbanded at the end of the 60s) in which Leary and his peers used LSD to acheive a heightened spiritual and religious experience.
And yes, most of these drugs were only made illegal in recent times (such as LSD... became a Schedule I as late as1966....and "Shrooms" in their natural form are not necessarily illegal to possess but dried are).
Zig Zag Zen is a GREAT book that really goes into the mindset of those times. Great scientific studies, articles and memoirs from educational leaders, artists and scientists alike.

Contrary to popular belief, the Flintstones television show was not a documentary. While often used in Creationist teachings as proof that Dinosaurs and humans coexisted, it has been proven that these shows were made as entertainment and not for educational purposes.

Amazing! I'm not surprised by this at all. And people think they have a chance to 'win' a war on drugs...
Humans are curious and will experiment with all sorts of substances and ways of ingesting them. I wonder what the key turning point in history was that turned drug use from something religious to something illegal. - 3 years ago
