Your being lied to....pt.3

3. this brings me to the 'firewall;' the vanguard of the western Propaganda system. this is much less powerful, (and necessary), in the US than in Western Europe or the British Crown, but it is the very thing that keeps most intelligent people, particularly in academia, engaged in the two-party democratic process and away from revolutionary, or truly democratic, forces. by this I am referring to the BBC, NPR, PBS, CBC, certain portions of the NYT, WP, the Globe, and other such surces. These publicly funded semi-governmental news sources with very long leashes. they can do and say essentially whatever they want, provided they follow one rule: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain." by this i mean, these media sources, which, to be fair, are still very constrained by the distorted political discourse in these country which make the truth seem like a wacko liberal conspiracy theory, are allowed free range so long as they don't actually make the assertion that the media is part of a controlled system intended to manipulate public opinion. and since only a very small percentage of the population actually consumes this stuff, it has little significant impact.

So there it is. now I'm sure you are wondering 'how does this all work, how can journalists be controlled, how could this 'secret' be kept,' and of course i wouldn't say any of this stuff unless i knew the answer, or at least had a plausible answer that makes more sense, given the facts, than any alternative. but that's a very long discussion, and much less fun for me to write. if you express interest in this stuff, and hopefully are committed to spreading the word or doing something about it (pending a satisfactory explanation for how it all works), i'll devote more time to it.

I've realized recently that posting crap to people on facebook has little to no impact, and that i need to just devote the time and explain stuff to people, and so i'm happy to explain any of this to anyone who, of course, has a good heart, is intelligent, is not weak, and is passionate. and so know that i am doing this not be an intellectual and assert my opinion (which actually is a force that plays a major role in mechanics of the media), which is something i totally detest. i know that you probably get a great deal of joy from reading NYT, watching MSNBC, following the races, and all of that good stuff; but just always be aware of what they are trying to do; and that they are damn good at doing it (I watch all that stuff too, and it was very useful for me to do this during my 'trying on hats' period where I was sort of comparing the above world-view with the righteous-journalist myth).

    • Beautiful, nice one GVE. Seems to run along the lines of 'manufactured consent' and 'Zeitgeist'. Do you have a contact for the guy who wrote the article?

    • Again weighing in for our freedom on the Internet. We have within our grasp the vehicle to make the difference on this power play for our minds. We can compare several stories, as was noted in other comments here. On nearly all the news media sites there are places for comments. If we are all for the truth, and stand together against the propaganda machine of the media, we can alter much...one post at a time, one word at a time. Becoming involved in the current political campaign, I have noted most of us "sing to the choir," meaning that is what we are doing now. Those who want to make a difference through the Internet need to consider weighing in on forums that are just so far right or left that when you read them, you hold your head and let your mouth drop open. Those are the places the light of information can make the greater difference. There is a concerted effort of "them" and "us" that is dividing everyone down the middle. In this I am suggesting, again, that the Internet is the answer to tipping this balance and power struggle for the mind of the public, and it goes beyond America, as noted in the article. When the furor of the campaigns is done, why not get out there and write on those forums that piss you off because of their fanaticism?

    • people, please, let's be mellow here! how the hell are we supposed to stand together & wake the world up if we're too busy picking holes in one another's use of punctuation?!?

i would like to believe that most people on current have their hearts in the right place. the wealth of progressive discussion that goes on here makes this -potentially- a very enriching community; informing & inspiring those of us who feel a genuine desire to be informed & inspired. petty bickering amongst ourselves merely devalues the subjects that are being put forward!

i like this post -all three exhaustive parts of it- which i sense is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. the clear message here is AWARENESS. it's exceedingly important that we stay focussed, stay awake, & don't get sucked back in.

a disgruntled former media student myself -having quickly become disillusioned with the industry & dropped out after the first year- i also have a pretty good idea how the game works. this is why i no longer watch the tv or read the newspapers, & i strongly encourage others to do likewise.

so if your tv's still on standby, do switch it off. hell, unplug the bastard & throw it out the window! i mean, why give propaganda a central platform in your own home?

i hope gveStudios brings us more on this topic in due course.

having my bachelors degree in journalism
i know first hand of what you speak
i interned at two of the big ten newspapers in the country and it soured me on the profession
where one newspaper has a very socialist stance the other came off very liberal( i use this term as most will understand)

neither paper wanted the story told the way it happened -meaning-
it had to push the agenda of the paper to keep the readers reading and happy

but there is a plus side to this.....=
to be informed read a story from as many fronts as you can...for years now i read the same story over from different sources....if you do not have time for that than subscribe to reuters or AP as those journalists are not being edited for advertising sales

    • I've been aware of how the media works for sometime and accepted it, but with the degree of garbage that is being put on at the same time I'm starting to see lots of real people around me at the hands of piss poor political policy, it's getting old quick.

It's almost shameful to see things like Paris Hilton on TV when there are so many real problems and real people that need help.

    • This is basically why I don't feel bad for watching the news or reading the newspaper!!! I feel like I'm being lied to constantly or that I can't trust the information given. It's pretty sad but I completely ignore the comment that "younger people" should read the newspaper because it feels completely manipulated.
I'll stick to the Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Current for now! (biased much?!)

Hah I feel you. I get the sunday LA Times and read yahoo, current and watch the daily show. But I was offered a subscription to the economist by a family friend and I turned them down. I read some of one issue in the store and decided to throw them into the pile with all the others. I do Enjoy Left Right and Center on NPR though.

I had personal experience with the Iron Hand we call our media system working on the media team for Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign.

    • I'm with ninepounds on this one. While I would never consider myself a conservative as the media has defined it, even if I were, I couldn't imagine voting for this current regime to continue. I can't fool myself into thinking that I'm independent. After the last election, I literally stopped watching the news for 3 years. I couldn't believe that people actually voted for him again. But, until a better alternative presents itself, then I am forced to choose from what is essentially two sides of the same coin, and that will always be the democrats for me.

That being said, I completely agree with the author's sentiments, and I would like to know how to get in touch with him so that I may be more liberated in my thinking. Go Truth!

    • Well, he did say he would be happy to explain it for those of us who asked, and I think I have a pretty good grasp of what he is trying to say. If it is too much for you, then by all means, bow out of the conversation and shut up already!

As for his post, I thought it was right on, well spoken, and well worded. I did not ask for a summary for my own sake, but for the sake of others who may have become lost in such a large post... it is typical in any writing to summarize, especially those of this magnatude. Writing 101, actually.

And what do you care which side I lean to? I cannot stand what the current regime has done and I am voting to replace them, that is all.

    • 9pounds,
After reading a number of your posts in the past, you have not one leg to stand on.
GVE, put so much into this and for you to piggy back on it makes my stomach turn.
Voting Independent? You are so far left its crazy.

I cant even begin to respond to GVE's post as he has such a grasp of the workings of the media. Its a case of "Im not worthy" to respond. There is so much here to absorb and for you to say:
"It would have been helpful if you summerized what you were trying to say at the end, just so we know if we are getting your points. "

proves you dont have a clue what he is saying. Read point one again and again.
For him to summarize this would be to chew it up and regurgitate it into something that the simple minded could understand. This is deep stuff GVE is giving us here.
FYI Its Summarized. Learn to spell.

Don't know either of you, but wanted to say to you,the hungry one, before you correct spelling, or better said criticize spelling, you'd best check your syntax and the correct use of caps, how is my run-on sentence? Kidding, I don't care how my post is,to you, that is.

As near as I can tell, you are saying what I have been saying for over 25 years, which is why I have been voting independant since then... that we Americans, too ignorant and arrogant to know any better, are victims of propaganda, and refuse to believe it because we think we are too smart to fall for it, right?
